With the over-optimization penalties looming, even 400-600 words seem like a bit much for SEO web pages. Regarding blogs and articles, that's probably about where you want to be. But for the average website, it's not only easier to write engaging content with a strong call to action in 300 words or less, but it's also more aesthetically pleasing and easy to design around. Something to think about as Google starts to penalize for over-optimized chunks of text that only exist to stuff keywords into.
