@Tommy Lasordid I'd also like to see the Dodgers sign Scott Hairston for a potential platoon with Etihier. I have to believve that he'd consider the Dodgers with his brother already on the team.
@Tommy Lasordid I agree completely and wonder why Dee Gordon has been left for dead by so many people after last season. With his speed, if he can find a way to recapture his play from 2011, there's no reason to believe he isn't a viable option.
I'm hoping he has a strong spring, making the choice obvious, and allowing the Dodgers to move Hanley to 3B and taking care of multiple problems with one player.
@tacosenojos Teams can pull a player back from trade waivers. If he had cleared waivers all the way to Boston's pick, he would've been sent as part of the package today but he be traded as a "player to be named later" once the trade restriction are removed after the season.
Really? During the 2015 season:
Kemp - 30/31, Ethier - 32/33, Gonzalez - 32/33, Ramirez - 31, Kershaw - 27, Billingsley - 31, Gordon - 27, Crawford - 34.
By that time, they'll have new C, 2B, and 3-5 SP (probably including Zach Lee). It's generally agreed that 28-33 are the prime 5 years in a baseball career, and everyone is at our near that number, the only one being over is Crawford (by one year).
I agree that the most impressive part of this transaction is that the backloaded contract didn't make the Dodgers flinch when improving the roster. Now if they only continue that trend with Uribe later this week...
@GordonMoody @JeffKlein @Shawn
My point wasn't to break down each player or trade, but to show that if you have a good developmental system in place, it might be smarter to be patient and hold onto your own talent. That would hold true for every team.
The Dodgers would be a completely different team if they'd only hang onto their homegrown talent. If just these six transactions DON'T happen, the Dodgers are a powerhouse:
1) Paul Konerko for Jeff Shaw and Dennys Reyes.
2) Carlos Santana for Casey Blake and Jon Meloan.
3) Edwin Jackson and Chuck Tiffany for Danys Baez and Lance Carter.
4) James McDonald and Andrew Lambo for Octavio Dotel.
5) Adrian Beltre signs with the Mariners.
6) Shane Victorino protected from Rule V draft.
Line-up and rotation:
CF - Victorino
2B - Ellis
RF - Kemp
1B - Konerko
3B - Beltre
LF - Ethier
C - Santana
SS - Gordon
SP - Kershaw
SP - Billingsley
SP - Lilly
SP - Jackson
SP - McDonald
Obviously this is a best case scenario, but it's an exercise in showing that sometimes, the best move, is the move that isn't made. Lilly was also a homegrown talent that could be added to the list making Ellis the only FA signing from what could be the Dodgers lineup.
Remind anyone else of the 1988 W.S. lineups?
@dprouty @KevinDurden at the news conference later, Braun blamed his "0 for the series" on a technicality - the bat boy kept all the bat donuts away from him too long so his swing was off.
