@I Digesti @CeeBeast Looks like he's up to start for Joc tomorrow (first day off for Joc and it's against a tough lefty in Bumgarner).

At least, that's what Eric Stephen speculated on twitter.

@Subtle Euphemism 1 reason why not: "Baby Giraffe" is kinda-sorta Brandon Belt's nickname and we don't need any Giants nickname crossover stuff here.

I wonder if the TWC issue could help be a motivator to strike a deal between regional carriers and MLBAM on the local blackouts, particularly if the merger gets blocked and TWC can't write down the Dodgers deal.

If lots of people in the LA area use MLB.tv and VPN's to watch the Dodgers instead of switching to TWC or whatever, perhaps that gives MLB leverage to get the networks on board with a plan that gives them some revenue from MLB.tv streams.

They can go to the networks and say "look, all these people are bypassing the local blackouts already, and you're not getting any revenue from them. Lets cut a deal to lift the blackouts but get you some revenue from the streamers in exchange."

@Purple Drank @Bawfuls @DodgerBytes I thought Alesso was pretty blah (and I did enjoy him last year) but the contrast between Alesso and Porter's visuals were very telling IMO.

Porter had his whole Worlds tour visual journey with a story created to complement his music. Alesso had his name in big-ass letters, pictures of his face, and an androgynous 3D character modeled after him.

In all this rambling about defensive numbers, it should be pointed out that all the best defensive metrics now are proprietary.

The FieldFX system is installed in all 30 MLB stadiums and that data is NOT publicly available. It is quite likely that many front offices have their own internal defensive metrics that are more robust and accurate than what we have access to. We know for a fact that the Dodgers do now, thanks to that comment about Puig's defense from Farhan during his Twitter Q&A this spring.

@jamesbradleyjb89 @Bawfuls I don't think there are many people putting as much stock into defensive metrics as you seem to be implying here.

I also vehemintly disagree that any defensive metrics could single handedly anchor Guerrero to the bench right now. The current Dodgers FO is not wearing blinders. They use all the information available to them, and that includes actually watching players play the game i.e. scouting.

@BlueMarvin (Not Freaking Out) @Bawfuls @TellMyWifeISaidHello The money difference isn't that significant because the players SD sent back are also owed money, Braves save like $22M over the next several years.

And they DFA'd Quentin right away so what was even the point of including him? The prospect is a top-100 guy but not world-breaking, and who knows what the pick ends up being.

It just seems like the Braves could have traded Kimbrel at the deadline to a desperate team and made a killing compared to this.

@PagansOedipalComplex @Bawfuls @Tymathee @nsxtasy I still don't think his ERA was "ace" status until last season, which again came on the back of a significant spike in strikeouts that I'd like to see repeated before I believe it.

I'm not saying he's a bad or even mediocre pitcher, he's very good. But last year is the only one that stands out as "frontline starter" caliber, so I'm skeptical that that's who he is going forward.

@Tymathee @Bawfuls @nsxtasy Early Kershaw had better peripherals. Kershaw's 2008 K/9 was 8.36, higher than every season of Cueto's career until last year. Kershaw's FIP was 4.08 that year, and hasn't been higher than 3.12 since then. Cueto's lowest FIP in a season was 3.27 (in 2012).

Reply

@Tymathee @Bawfuls @nsxtasy He's been outperforming his peripherals for several years (tho yes some would say that's evidence that he's better than FIP/xFIP indicate). Last year he posted a K/9 of 8.94 when his career rate had been 7.0

He wasn't an "ace" until last year, when the strikeouts spiked.

I'm not convinced he's real until he does it again (i.e. maintaining the high strikeouts).

@DodgerBytes @PagansOedipalComplex What Rose did is SOOOOOO much more potentially damaging to the sport of baseball than any substance any player has ever taken.

Gambling has the potential to remove competition from the game completely, to turn it into kabuki theater that exists only for the enrichment of gamblers and mobsters.  Gambling nearly destroyed MLB in it's early years, which is why the game has had a strong zero-tollerance policy since then.  Go read up on how damaging the gambling scandals in Taiwanese baseball were to that league within the past decade.

When guys take drugs to try to get an edge, at least they're still trying to win.

Also, never forget that Rose agreed to accept a lifetime ban from baseball in exchange for MLB halting it's investigation into his gambling activities.
