You realize when you tell other people to move on from the "Harlem Shake" it's the equivalent of saying "get off my lawn!" right?

To be fair, the reason UT's athletic department has little to no emergency cash fund is because they are paying fired coaches and administrators, fan apathy has lead to a lack of ticket sales, and decided to fund a multimillion dollar practice facility. Sure the academic contribution is a big part of that, but it's not like it is an unexpected cost. Also, it's not like Tennessee is the only athletic department forced to contribute to the academic side of things. Contributing factor? Absolutely. Sole cause? No way.
As an aside is it really too much to ask that an athletic department bringing in hundreds of millions of dollars contribute to the academic side of things?

So instead of reading that quote and taking it as UK fans aren't nearly as unreasonable as they are painted, you read that quote and focus on the negative. Interesting. 2 sides of the same coin, I guess. And with the title of the article, yes you appear to be reading into his comments
"Don't believe Fulmer would take the job?" Are you serious? Fulmer lobbied HARD for interviews at the Louisville and Arkansas jobs the last 2 years. Truth is, no one wants Phat Phil at the SEC level and any whispers to the contrary are just his people trying to keep his name relevant.

This is one of the reasons I think Cal only has about 5 more years at UK. They guy is just constantly doing something. He's either recruiting, raising money for one of his many charities, coaching the team, going to Jay Z concerts with Irv Gotti, or speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. I fear for the person that takes over after him, because no one else can keep up with the pace he sets.

@John at MrSEC I agree that UK football fans are better than other secondary sports, but the problem is football is not a secondary sport. I realize it's treated like that at UK by the administration and fans, but football is the cash cow for the athletic department. We need our fans to stop being "good compared to how we perform" and just be "good for the SEC." Joker really lost an oppurtunity as we were averaging 65k+ from 27007-2010 and really lost people with the bowl game. When South Carolina was down in the beginning of the Holtz era, their (much larger) stadium was more full than ours was in 2006 when we went 4-4 in the SEC (best in last 20 years!) There is some passion for football in Kentucky, but far too many fans are oblivious to the fact that we even have a football team and are worried about camping out for a basketball practice.
I'm not completing blaming the fans, but they get much more credit than they deserve in my opinion. It's time to start leveraging basketball boosters to contribute to football projects, or lose access. Our fans have to step up. Until we get facilities on par with the rest of the SEC, any level of fan interest isn't going to matter.

@John at MrSEC
I think you characterized the UK fanbase perfectly. believe it or not, there are some diehards out there that care about football as much or more than basketball (myself included). However, somehow the UK media spins that we have this massive loyal fanbase. Fact of the matter is, the UofL game every other year and LSU and Florida in 2007 are the only games you couldn't get a ticket with ease at Commonwealth. I've been to a number of road games as well, and UK's attendance is always shoddy at best. I know it's hard to support a losing program, but UK's football fans have a much better reputation than they deserve in my opinion.
I'm not really sure I understand this sentiment. What is it about Petrino that makes him unhirable? The fact he cheated on his wife? Yah he left his last 2 jobs under terrible circumstances, but I would love for UK to get a coach that was SO successful another college or NFL team wanted to hire him away. I think he also realizes that this is his last chance and (unlike Gillispie) will be on his best behavior. If UK hired him and he did so well that Texas came calling 2 years later, I would be ecstatic that we had that much success.
@John at MrSEC @GeoffDawg I think maybe Bray just didn't want to answer any more questions about the end of the game, and he decided to avoid that by saying he didn't watch the film. Anyway, I think it was overreaction theater all around
2 years ago on Ha Ha! UT O-Coordinator Chaney Says Bray Did Watch Film
@viciousdawg Although I think Petrino would do well @ Uk, I dont think there is any way Barnhart would hire him. He has burned too many bridges in the state.
Let me echo the comments of the 2 previous posters. Rich Brooks had been calling for a recruiting room publicly since 2008. Who knows how long he was asking for it privately? Here's a quote from Brooks in 2011: “I was there and I was told that we were going to renovate our stadium, have a recruiting room, have club seating and do all the things that all the other schools in the SEC have. That didn't come. It got mired up because a new basketball arena and new baseball stadium were thrown into it and it was just too big of a number. We've been known as a basketball school and basketball needs to get what they get and keep getting it, but there is enough money that football brings in that needs to be invested back into the program.
“You put suites between the goal lines and raise the press box on top of the stadium because that is so antiquated and so old. Get club seating in there with an area behind the concourse so they can go inside and get food and drinks. Then maybe you get more people tailgating inside and get more people in the stadium earlier as well."
When it comes to Joker, it's clear he is in over his head. At the time he was given "head coach in waiting" title, a number of different programs were doing the same thing. He was being courted by other BCS schools as an offensive coordinator, and Barnhart made the right decision, it just didn't work out.
The facilities, however, are VERY frustrating. To my knowledge, UK is the only athletic department in the SEC (other than possibly Vandy) that does not have bonding authority. In order to have a project approved, it must be approved by the university and go through the state legislature All previous rennovations have been paid for in cash though private donations. UK just went through a major hospital addition, so all of the bonding capacity recently has been allocated for that. Over the past 2 years, UK has committed $21M to track, softball, and soccer. Only $14M has gone to football over the last 6 years. We are in dire need of an update to our stadium and a recruiting room (could be rolled into the same project). After seeing the new practice facilities at Arkansas and Tennessee, I'm sure UK needs an update to that as well. On top of that, UK takes in 1/3 donations of SEC bretheren such as Florida, LSU, and Alabama. In order for the next coach to be successful the following must occur:
1) A plan must be put in place to upgrade facilities that includes recuriting room, practice facility, and update to Commonwealth Stadium
2) A "forward thinking" coach (ala James Franklin) should be his replacement. Marketing UK's football program is not easy, we need someone who is willing to think outside the box
3) Our fans must get behind the new coach and commit financially to help out with upgrading facilities
John, although Petrino could be considered a coup for UK to pull off as a hire, you (and the rest of the media) need to do a little homework before throwing his name out there. There is a better chance that Hal Mumme is rehired as UK's coach than Bobby Petrino. Mich Barnhart and Petrino hate each other, and he continuously burned bridges throughout the state among high school coaches while at UL. While I think he would win for UK, it's sad to say there is no chance he will ever be here.
2 years ago on UK D-Coordinator Minter Denies Having A Blowup With Head Coach Phillips
@John at MrSEC @db20207 I agree that the semifinal would not provide substainally increased revenue, but that is not the only part of the equation. Adding 17 million people into the SEC footprint (NC, VA) would allow the SEC network to charge significantly more for those 2 markets, thus generating more money. Does that make it worth it? I'm not sure, but I'm sure people at the SEC are looking into it. Also, don't discount the fact that the people at the SEC are some of the most forward thinking in all of sports. They were the first to add a championship game, so why not be the first to add a semifinal?
It's possible that the league's presidents put their foot down over the 15/16 issue, but it seems kind of like an arbitrary distinction doesn't it? You've already got teams practicing from August until January. That would not change, just the number of games played.
2 years ago on Notre Dame To The ACC, Exit Fees Rising, “VT/NCSU To The SEC” Rumors As Dead As We Always Said
I have seen some other people float the idea IF the SEC went to 16 teams that they would go to 4 divisions and have a semifinal game to determine who plays for the SEC championship. This would allow the SEC schedule to remain at 8 games while being able to see teams more than once every 12 years (only 3 permanent "division" opponents). Do you think there is any way this could ever happen? It could also lead to a "final 4" plus an SEC championship game, which would only increase revenue. I know the NCAA would have to grant a waiver for 2 games to decide the conference championship, but I always liked the idea.
I think the rest of the ACC will disagree with that statement. Getting the Irish to come in for a home game every once in a while and the increased eyeballs from ACC home games involving ND? Should be worth something when it comes time to renegotiate
@sojourner I think
@bradleygator Once a journalist says they "know" there is a story all credibility is out the door. At that point there are not an unbiased investigator looking for the truth, they are someone with an agenda looking to prove a point
2 years, 1 month ago on Report: NCAA "Expanding Inquiry" Into UK Hoops Signee Noel
@AustinVol Maybe it is conspicuous but all the top NCAA basketball investigating journalists keep going after the story, and all they have done thus far is knock on the doors of DeMarcus Cousins and Eric Bledsoe's friends and stopped Enes Kanter from being eligible. Honestly, the most conspicous thing might be a recruit choosing someone else other than Kentucky. Come to Kentucky you can win a national championship, and if you are in the top 6 you will be drafted. Maybe we should be investigating the recruits that don't go to Kentucky?
That being said, Thamel investigates UK for two reasons 1) he wants to be the one to "bring down" Cal 2) when you write about UK, your stories get hits. I would say it's a little "conspicuous" his first article wasn't about the UNC scandal, Rodney Purvis, or Shabazz Mohamed.
@AustinVol "When the curtain is pulled back?" What more do you want from the Pat Forde, Pete Thamel and Dana O'Neil? They have been hot on Cal's trail over the last 3 years and they haven't gotten anything to stick yet. Show me something conclusive and maybe I'll buy it

@AustinVol Or he could throw beer bottles at the cops. That usually doesn't result in a charge in K-Ville
"Rod Strickland was pulled over this morning in Lexington on a routine traffic stop on the way to the office. According to police reports, he was pulled over for failure to signal and for driving with a suspended license. According to Strickland, his vehicle was properly registered and he produced his driver’s license at the scene. We are currently gathering information on whether his license was suspended due to a clerical error which led to his arrest."
If true maybe he doesn't need a driver. If not true, really no excuse for driving on a suspended license
@John at MrSEC John, appreciate the reply. I think Cal wanted to do this from the moment he got to UK. Now he finally has the collateral to do so with #8. I can't read his mind, but I would say that being scared to play on the road so he can go undefeated is WAY down the list of reasons for him to do this. So I think to simplify the argument by saying he is chicken and wants to go undefeated is a little bit sensationalistic. By not locking UK into another home and home, he can expose the "brand" (yes I cringe when I hear that word associated with college athletics) more across the country. Simply stated, Recruits care more about UK playing Duke and Baylor on neutral courts than they do playing at historic Assembly Hall. I also think UK is a little butthurt about the way the administration allowed (some say encouraged) the crowd to act and put Darius Miller in serious jeopardy of being injured at the end of the game. I don't agree with the second point, but if you pile that onto the fact that IU took things public on multiple occasions in an attempt to swing public opinion the UK admin is almost done dealing with the Hoosiers. Unless Cal and Crean get together I think UK and IU will unfortunately miss playing each other for at least a few years

Sorry for the double post. Louisville is a gimmie? I hope you mean that in the sense that it's a gimmie that they are on the schedule last year and not in the sense that they won't be good next year. You realize they return their most important pieces from a final four team last year right?
Honestly I really think that UK should go to Bloomington, but UK already have 2 permanent non-conference home and homes (UNC, UL), and if Mitch and Cal say it doesn't make sense to add another one, I guess I will just take them at their word. Speaking of which, what other college basketball teams have 2 permanent non-conference home and homes?
I think this whole negotiation comes down to the egos of UK/IU administration. UK has drawn their line in the sand about not going to Bloomington, so IU has run to the media on 2 seperate occasions to negotiate in public (announcing the cancelation which caught UK by surprise and leaking the letter to UK). I don't think the UK administration appreciates that tactic very much and egos may end up canceling the series. Which is a shame because one of my favorite memories is going to a 50/50 Freedom Hall and watching the Cats stomp Neil Reid.
That being said, love your site and keep up the good work John.

By that same logic, if you continue to predict the world is going to end every year, you have to be right eventually, correct? John Calipari has been succesful with the highly rated recruits because he is absolutely honest from the beginning when he promises them nothing and expects them to be team players. The reason the kids pay attention is because he has had 3 of the last 4 #1 overall draft picks (after Davis), and has put 9 guys in the NBA in 2 years @ UK. As evidenced by last year's UK team, not only does he go after the most talented guys, he also goes after the character guys willing to give up self-promotion for the better of the team. The craziest thing about that? Anthony Davis was college player of the year and took the 4th most shots on his team. Turns out, showing to NBA scouts that you are willing to differ is a trait they hold in high regards.
His last 7 teams have at least gotten to the sweet 16, and he hasn't been short of the Elite 8 @ UK. Granted, none will be as young as next years squad, but what if he gets Alex Oriakhi? Then all of a sudden you have a Senior leader with national championship experience on the team. Instead of arguing at some point it has to go bad, why not say "it's worked so far, it might continue to work?"
