Having spent this last year with my oldests low end MTB on the and off the roof of the car I can say with conviction I would not touch mechanical disks on a cross bike. Maybe hydraulic ones will be less finicky but pretty close to each time on and off the car I had to readjust the front pads. The rear which was not being swapped in and out was fine. I haven't touched it. I can't imagine trying to do race wheel swaps with a mechanical disk. This bike has Hayes mechanical disks and they work well enough when they are setup correctly, but with the wheel on and off they don't stay that way.
