I've listened to lots of stories and even in extreme cases I have been able to get someone's perspective somehow, tried to walk in their shoes in order to understand what they have done. Except I have never been able to do that for child sexual abusers.
Why does this stuff happen? I have given up trying to understand because I think it might just be dangerous to really get inside their heads??? It certainly wouldn't be pleasant and my heart goes out to people who have to deal with or live through these cases.
I haven't seen the article you critique but if I was sitting around with a drink I would argue a couple of things just in the way you interpret them. I couldn't much care what the authors intent was to equate some level of religious belief or even religious observance with stupidity is a kind of contempt that wins no points with anyone except "new atheists". My observance has been that practically all articles on religion I see are polemic. The recent Q&A a perfect example. People on both sides of the fence then feel that contempt that ..."comes from the frustration of articles like this"
I have been around churches all my life and met a few loonies. I've met some who were not religious too. But mostly the rest are not that much bothered by these issues. All the things I've heard mad preachers say about what atheists believe and atheists say about what Christians believe is seriously laughable.
Keep up the good work.
I didn't watch because it seemed to me I'd hear nothing new from two people I would consider to be the least interesting in the field of modern religious thought due to their extreme dogmatic postions. I like Dawkins but he doesn't show much understanding of humanity from a realistic perspective. People are in general not rational beings and they often like the mish mash of beliefs they have accumulated. Christian people are as varied a bunch as are scientists and many are practical atheists. I call myself christian and I am happy to be called atheist .
On another stream of thought I am also just a bit bored of simplistic arguments that religion has harmed humanity , god causes wars etcetera. This gives away responsibilty for human destructiveness just as blaming god or devil for it does with a certain kind of believer. 70 people died at a soccer match recently. Soccer is evil. The poms are always fighting at matches. :)
