Good article Micheal, Givit does a lot right... but ... still doesn't tackle the "Pre-Problem" of getting people to actually start taking videos (beyond the usual celebrities, media and ranters)... at Reqvu we let you request videos from your friends (so they know what to shoot and where/how to share them, and also dedicate videos in a deceptively simple interface that makes video sharing easy. Editing, filters... all that jazz will be necessary but only after people start getting comfy shooting videos (and realize their face doesn't need to be in it :) .... Instagram didn't get people to start taking pictures, it just made more of your pictures sharable (er.. since their more beautiful with filters). So we don't need an Instagram for video yet, we need something that gives people a reason to take a video.
"human flesh search" is the local term for outing people in China with the online mob finding out people's identities.
In the Mac vs PC ads the Mac character was a smug, secure, superior without effort to the PC character... the lead characters in these ads are hapless fools who can't even figure out a Mac... big fail for apple.
I didn't know Dan Lyons was a VC now?? ;)
The reason the hype about Instagram for video is so weird is that many people take photos and share them, Instagram makes more of your photos worthy of sharing because they''ve improved the look, Far less people share videos in the first place so all the great editors and effects won't make a difference to lubricate a behavior that's not happening as much. Blatent plug, at Reqvu we try to tackle that source problem by giving users the purpose to take videos to share, by letting them dedicate and request them on Facebook...
With different styled apps contributing to the main Facebook body... they can also not just experiment but actually use different monetization strategies that will keep the main Facebook experience free.
Theoretically if you don't live in the Valley or even the US you'll realize very quickly who's buying the phablets... and they're spread across many demographics, and weren't designed or marketed to appeal specifically to enterprise software "tech snobs". Sarah you are the one Valley tech writer who's supposed to have the biggest "world view"... me thinks you need to go on another trip soon :)
Sadly, plenty of small as yet insignificant startups with plenty of interesting things to say won't get heard, overheard or tweeted. Oh the irony.
I"m pretty sure I'm using a widget to make this comment on your site :)
Here in Taiwan a lot of stores are stopping people from taking pics and vids of products.... not sure if that' the case these days in the US.
Agree, Viddy and Socialcam are getting their Facebook caffeine hit. Addressing the same celebs, attentions seekers that were already using Youtube. Pinterest has at least activated a new group of people doing a new behavior. While everyone is looking expectantly for an "instagram of video" investors should be looking for a video app that actually encourages new users to be making and sharing more video (kind of like what Flip did for the video hardware business). At Reqvu we're iterating a round an app that actually has mechanisms to encourage that behavior, not just adding celeb. stolen youtube content to attract audience so the same old 1000 to 1 consumers to producers situation for video can play out again on mobile. That's not what instagram did. Instagram turned more people into producers.
So.. you're a small artist without the time to promote all of your wonderful work/performances to your Facebook network, so you make an app that you'll need to promote to your network? It's a distraction to their target market.
