Exactly Joe - I've taught for over 20 years and gone to many many ranges. Women are very quick at getting good with firearms, it's not just years of mimicking bad habits on movies etc or a macho attitude that makes listening to advice harder (both of which is true), females have better fine motor skills than men. Neurophysiological fact and trigger control/fight alignment is all about fine control. As soon as a GF/wife starts to approach and often better the groups of the guy, (and these days thank goodness, there's less confidence problems with the guys) and he has a male-self-confidence-identity issue of any kind, the first thing he'll to is give her the biggest caliber anything he has with the hottest load he's carrying and naturally it will intimidate her. If she decides not to go shooting or it simply makes her flinch for the rest of the session, well, it's disappointing to see and I get annoyed. I wish I could teach all beginning lady shooters (or any level) to politely refuse the offer. It happens to me sort frequently in public ranges, but I'm lucky to be recoil insensitive, Model 29s are nooo problem. I just smile after shooting and hand it back. The Ruger sounds like a great value! I have a Kahr P380 and Love it. It's not my usual carry pistol except if I'm going out on the town in tight clothes. Unlike the old blowbacks like the PPK/S the modern designs have much better triggers and less snap. Destinee, btw if you look at the Gold Dot in ballistic gelatin, it's surprisingly good. I want to make sure it will hold together on forehead or sternum/rib hits so I hit some pork and beef ribs (both of which are thicker) with simulant behind and they performed flawlessly!
One note for people who don't want to rely on a .380ACP (and my regular is my P229 .357Sig) is that most women wear clothing which isn't compatible with discreet carry and our purses weigh a ton from all the stuff we carry - I moved to a daypack which has managed to become heavy already, but I do carry a DARK IFAK + survival stuff as well as makeup etc. Many I think, especially if going out on the town (often here it's Hollywood which is a dicey place) would rather not take anything extra. The times I've gone out in tight or light clothing and small purse, my Kahr P380 has been a real gift and it is as small as my old TP22. Something is much better than nothing. fyi, if anyone ever experience feed problems with something like that - my current instructor saw the problem and corrected it - which happened to correct an occasional misfeed with my BHP as well. I'm used to the grip which has both thumbs pointing straight ahead unlike my old revolver style grip. When I first got the Kahr I was almost in tears because of all the feed problems. When I changed my grip to thumbs tucked, the problems disappeared. I also have a Glock 27 (with Storm Lake dual port bbl .357Sig) and it hides as easily as my P229 - less actually in an IWB because of grip size.
omg - I have spent so much on your recommendations! :)
hmm set up camera with output to a computer with motion detection and leave it alone :)
Laura - Love your comments (not just yours but all the extra info) - this thread is so huge I can't find them w/o hitting "50 more" 50 more times! You guys have the best info and comments, but it's taking a toll on my personal Defcon - I just upgraded my bug-back kit (swapped out the 12ga and put in on of my ARs plus about 800 rnds). Also between this and the other articles about layers and layers of truth, disinformation etc, solipsism is returning as an interest! I saw a post on aluminized ghillie - there is an easier way ;) Could all of us with good spotting scopes "Look to the Skies!" and cameras do some watching and maybe we can have a drone image posted sometime. Oh upgrading my home-zombie-hoard kit too! Gotta get more Varget and a bunch of 77gr match and TSX!
@Tango9 @shagstar there aren't too many older than I am I bet. I wish I could get back to my old career and still help!
@N3V3R_SRRNDR hmtd and ap deteriorate and have a shelf life, he would have had to keep replenishing.
@Tango9 @HugeFan @engelbrad and I don't even want to imagine determined squirrels climbing up some intruder's pants!
@HugeFan @momengineer when I was in college, it was during the Weatherman era - kids would call up the humanities bldg to call in threats during finals week. Gave them more time to study I guess.
@Tango9 @kaykayglover because SoCal it is pretty much impossible to get a CCW, there are a lot of good folk who would be defined as criminals here
@Old PH2 go you! I live on a street that's all antis and I'm one of the stand-out weirdos sigh.
@mrfrosty It takes a slightly different brain which thrives on statistics compared to quantum - kinda like some are better at algebra and others at calculus or DE. Software classes are a lot of work, rote memory, being super logical and meticulous. ick. Been there.
@SEAN SPOONTS @engelbrad Lots more. A few months ago it was nearly impossible to get lots of 5.56/.223 I'll be setting up my Dillon 650 for both 5.56 and 9x19 soon
@Old PH2 @KineticFury @mrfrosty @TheSkinsFactory KF, no they don't and neither do Koreans and I can't blame them (my ancestors came here during the Meiji period). OldPH2 ... no they aren't :P
@FormerSFMedic great thread - everything here reflects my experiences albeit small compared to many here.
@TheSkinsFactory Speaking of which, I've wondered if and how many Chechnyans might have been involved in those attacks.
@HugeFan @JackMurphyRGR @Zardoz Firing RPGs and ZPUs in the sky and yodelling "LuLuLuLu..!" Shows how happy they are.
@JackMurphyRGR @mrfrosty I remember reading about the Cu Chi Tunnels were the logistics staging point for the Tet Offensive. It seems like just south of the border would be another ideal setting.
@JackMurphyRGR Even not seeing the recent news how POTUS was pushing that story - I just couldn't fathom why all the regular news outlets were pushing the movie story so hard. I thought it was their attempt to make it look like insensitivity on a CA Z-rated movie producer's part. The article referenced made it come together. Thanks guys.
