@juanhenry @LiterallyPFP Piazza said so, but that whole accusation was bizarre to me. Piazza claimed that Vin publicly aired contract negotiation details and turned the fans against him. No source provided. Vin denies it, and he's certainly earned the benefit of the doubt in most people's minds, given how professional he is about those sorts of things.

@BIah the harpsichord is just sort of typecasted into baroque in people's mind, i think. it would be cool to see a harpsichord revival.

@internet baseball fan potato friend @NoHitWin2008 @DBrim tennessee is the same way. In fact, the big political issue from this year's election was "wine in grocery stores." it used to be a nono, but now the initiative to allow it has passed, and grocery stores will carry wine beginning in 2016. Liquor stores are pissed.

@NoHitWin2008 @mawp apparently it's more complicated than "you're not allowed to bring just any growler into a brewery"

http://beer.blogs.pressdemocrat.com/712/governor-signs-growler-bill/

"The new bill makes it more explicit: Breweries can fill any growler, but they do have to cover up any old label in at least a semi-permanent way (most people are opting to wrap it with an opaque plastic tape rather than use paint or wield a scraper to remove the old logo) and they have to affix a new tag or label to say exactly what kind of beer is in the bottle."

@NoHitWin2008 @Mike Petriello @DBrim don't forget that the Padres now employ Logan White and Dejon Watson. They know Kemp. I don't think that was a non-factor.

@Mike Petriello I was 12, and I was heartbroken. But the circumstances were so different, too. And I certainly wasn't going to abruptly decide to emotionally support (as if that makes any difference anyway) a team I previously hated. So strange.

@PagansOedipalComplex @mawp @LiterallyPFP No, I get it. I'm on this blog too. But if you stop and think about it, it's a little weird. Remember the really old Peyton Manning commercial where he's cheering on normal people as they walk by? "Here we go Insurance adjuster, here we go! CLAP CLAP" It's absurd. But that's what we do.

@PagansOedipalComplex @mawp @LiterallyPFP my thing is, being a sports fan is sort of inherently irrational. Why do we care so much about these people's job performance? etc.

So, can someone explain the VND thing? She decided to not enjoy the dodgers anymore because kemp and dee got traded, and she is instead going to enjoy the giants? Is that pretty much it?

@itsthatguywhodoesstuff @Diane. I heart Matt Kemp like you love yo moms Piazza was so much worse for so many reasons. That was a gut punch. This is like a painful, but understandable move to improve the entire club. Piazza was a betrayal by corporate carpet baggers who didn't even care about baseball.

@Diane. I heart Matt Kemp like you love yo moms I agree, but it seems really hardline considering what the dodgers looked like throughout the 2000s. Random nobodies shuffled in and out (Grabowski etc.). Now, they actually have an ownership group with the means and track record of establishing the kind of system that will produce players we can all feel comfortable rooting for, since we know they won't just be shipped off when they get too expensive. It's just that the transition takes some time.

@DodgerDodger @mawp @Diane. I heart Matt Kemp like you love yo moms That was a different commodity. They made him a competitive offer, but he wanted more years and more dollars than they were willing to spend. COmmitting to what he would have wanted (6 years, 90m) would have been the sort of move that's put them in their current spot.

With Kemp, they are able to secure a younger, cheaper catcher.

@DodgerDodger @LASports96 Trading Kemp isn't about controlling payroll. It's about improving the club. I don't know why this is even in question. They are trading for Grandal, a young, above average catcher, which is a major hole for the dodgers right now.

@DodgerDodger @Diane. I heart Matt Kemp like you love yo moms but that depends on who they get in return. If they get a decent-to-good catcher and plug that hole (they have nothing coming down the pike from farm), then it is a laudable way to use Kemp's contract. That's not something you can buy, as we've seen.

@Diane. I heart Matt Kemp like you love yo moms i agree with you. And if this ownership continued to sell off players I care about (like the Marlins are known for), then yeah I would stop caring.

But my point is that I am willing to give them time. I understand why they would move Kemp. Who else are they going to move? And Rollins/Kendrick/whoever, they are just short term rentals to keep the ship afloat. Meanwhile, Seager, Pederson, Urias, Holmes, Puig, AG (maybe?) - these are all players that the FO haven't touched. They are the future.

repost from below, because if I'm going to write several paragraphs in the early morning, I at least want someone to read it.

The fact is that this ownership has had to make some tough decisions based on the hand they were dealt when they bought the Dodgers from McCourt. They neeeded to win back the fanbase by upgrading the roster, that came at a cost of losing a ton of payroll flexibility. Then, they go out and get their Dream Team FO, and the only reason they do this is to make some moves to improve the club, both present and future.

Remember, Stan Kasten is still the guy running (or at least overseeing) the show. I know Friedman has a ton of leeway and control, but they wouldn't have hired him in the first place had their macro, longterm visions clashed. Kasten is famous for building sustainable farm systems. He loves home grown talent. My genuine expectation is that Friedman shares that overall vision.

Unfortunately, however, he inherited a franchise that had been abused by its former owner, and the homegrown talent just wasn't there. Yes, there were big leaguers who had made it, like Kemp, Ethier (if he counts), Billingsley, of course Kershaw, but the farm system was pretty barren.

So the question is, now that he's here, what is Friedman to be expected to do? The goal is to improve the club, but there are logjams all over the place. The roster is crufty.

I love Matt Kemp as much as anybody. I remember when he came up, oozing talent, and I agonized with everybody, hoping and waiting for years for him to finally put it all together. That "MVP" season was such an amazing experience to watch. And then to see him run into a wall, and lose two years of his prime, while idiot casuals ripped on him, that pissed me off. He seems like a genuinely good guy, and he's a lot of fun to watch.

That said, if Friedman's job is to improve the club, he doesn't have very many options. With gaping holes at Catcher, SS, BP, something needed to be done, or else what's the point of getting rid of Ned? So, in my mind, Kemp being traded is a defensible move if it addresses organizational weaknesses. It's sad, but it's more a residual effect McCourt's shitty ownership than of anything to do with Guggenheim or Friedman/Zaidi.

Notice that none of the top-tier homegrown prospects have been touched. They want to build for the future, and I think in 5 years, we will have a team built much more on the farm system. Right now, though, there needed to be a reboot of sorts, and to get that done, valuable pieces needed to be offered.

tldr, it sucks now, but this is a positive step toward a more "homegrown" future.
