I believe the SEC needs to work out a B1G/Pac12 type agreement with the B12 and ACC. The B1G and Pac12 are creating coast-to-coast coverage of their programs by playing each other. They can get the benefits of conference expansion, without actually expanding their leagues. The SEC, B12 and ACC need to work together to come up with a games package that would surpass what the B1G/Pac12 can offer. OU/LSU, Ark/WV, TX/A&M or Bama, MU/KU, TN/VT, GA/Clemson and others. This would enhance the TV packages for these conferences, and provide college football fans the best that college football has to offer.

Rental? Not a bad idea. : ) .. a coaches rent-a-center.
Seriously, I'm wondering if JLS is thinking about early retirement (currently 63 yrs old). I heard on one of the sports shows that JLS' salary at WS was around 130-140K. The salary at UofA is 850K + bonus opportunities. Let's say the Hogs have a good year and his total take is 1M. It would take 7 yrs at WS to make what he could make in 1 yr at UofA. Even if he stays only one year he is still ahead of the game money wise at the age of 64. I think 900k would hold him over until age 65.
3 years ago on John L. Smith Will Coach Arkansas
I'm concerned about hiring a coach away from another school at this late date. However, I think we will understand more about the move following the press conference tomorrow. Remember there were concerns about the firing of BP until after Jeff Long's press conference, and then it all made sense. I'm hoping for better clarification after tomorrows press conference. The players seem very happy, so from that stand point it is a good move.
Hi John..technically KFSM is in Fort Smith, KXNW is the Fayetteville affiliate. Just yanking your chain a little : )

It's nice to see the UofA moving on and putting another aspect of this issue behind us.
I'm not sure about Coach Fulmer as HC, but perhaps assisting with the interim needs. I still believe the UofA needs to wait until the end of the 2012 season to select a new HC.

The Aggies have a perfect response for this situation. They can call it an Aggie Joke. Some of the best Aggie jokes I've heard were told to me by Aggies.

Everything that I've read on this subject indicates Jeff Long had no knowledge of the inappropriate relationship between Patrino and Dorrell. I've worked in human resource areas and know that there are times it is appropriate to consider speeding up the hiring process. Given that there is no indication of any improprieties with Long's actions, I would agree with Jason's response. In the future I have no doubt Jeff Long will do a little more investigation into a similar request before approaching the Human Resources department.

On another note...I'm very proud of the character demonstrated by Paul Patrino and the Razorback team. I hope Jeff Long keeps the coaches and team together for the 2012 season. I feel very confident that this team will perform to the level they are expected to, and this unfortunate situation will not have a major impact on them. Go Hogs!

I'm happy to say those inappropriate comments from the tweets about Alex Oriakhi do not reflect the character of any UK fan I know. It looks like MU and UK are in for a real "cat fight".
It will be interesting to see if the text messages will shed light on the conversations between them about the job. Did he recommend she interview? Did she bring up the idea of interviewing for the job? Did he make any comments that suggested the job was hers before or during the interview process? Did they make any inappropriate comments about the other applicants? Ugh....what a HR nightmare.

Mizzou is an awesome addition to the SEC and I don't believe that I'm alone in this feeling. I also believe MU will surprise many SEC teams this fall. Unfortunately some in the SEC don't realize that the B12 was second only to the SEC in conference strength this last year. Welcome Mizzou I look forward to our future rivalry

Hi John, thanks for the response. BPs actions are a surprise to me. I might expect him to do something that would be for his personal gain, but what he did cost him his job and 18M over the next 7 years. This isn't something I expected from Bobby Patrino. It doesn't fit his known character flaw.

3 years ago on Nebraska's Pelini Scoffs At Arkansas Rumor
I've been reading a lot of sports articles and listening to national sports show, and there is a recurring theme that Arkansas should not be surprise, and that we basically got what we deserved. The situation that happened here was not something that Hog fans should have been expecting. All the warnings we were given had to do with BP running out on us like he did Louisville and Atlanta. He wasn't dismissed from these organizations for violating policy, he left them for what he thought was greener pastures. Loyalty to a program was the issue with him.
What happened here had nothing to do with him interviewing behind our backs or running off to another program. UofA addressed that possible issue by adding an 18M buy-out clause in his contact. BP wasn't going anywhere soon, and I believe he was generally happy at the UofA. If he hadn't violated hiring policies, and lied to his superiors, he'd still be our coach today.
John, I agree with your opinion that the UofA should not rush this process. From what I've read the team wants to work with the staff that remains, and that continuity is very important for a successfully 2012 season. Arkansas has the upgrade facilities, rabid fan base, and salary that will draw a good candidate to replace BP. We just need to show patience and let the process run its course. The 2013 recruiting season is going to be below our expectations regardless of having a new HC or an interim HC.
I believe this proactive approach by ATM is a good one for several reasons:
First, when Arkansas joined the SEC our facilities were inferior to the rest of the conference. We had difficulty competing in the SEC with these facilities. The UofA has excellent facilities now, and we continue to improve them. This has helped our recruiting and helped us to be more competitive in the SEC. ATM isn't as behind as we were, but there is room for improvement and I believe they are wise to take this proactive step.
Second, I live in Houston, which is very close to College Station, and I've read several articles that indicate ATM recruiting is benefiting from their move to the SEC. However, ATM has to compete with u.t. and other B12 schools for Texas recruits, and improving Kyle field is a very important step. The Longhorns have a 100K+seat newly remodeled stadium. Baylor has released plans for a new stadium (very nice I might add). ATM doesn't need to wait and see how they might perform in the SEC, they need to take steps to win the battle for Texas recruits. Doing that will provide them what they need to compete in the SEC.
As a side note...I'm very happy to have the Aggies in the conference. It's nice to have an old friend in the SEC.

I ran across this item about Gerrick McGee - http://www.footballscoop.com/news/6145-the-next-head-coach-at-arkansas. I'm not sure how trustworthy this site is, but I have not found any other sites that are mentioning it. What's your take on it?
Personally I hope that it isn't true. I believe it would be best to wait a season before bringing him on, if that is what the UofA would like to do. If he were to come in now that would create too much interruption in the lives of the new coaching staff and players at UAB, as well as, the coaches and players at the UofA. It has been reported by several sources that the Hogs want to continue with the current coaching staff. This is a solid team that can achieve its goals with the current leadership. I believe disrupting this would negatively impact the team this coming season.
3 years ago on Coaches Already Denying Interest In The Arkansas Job
I don't bellieve Jeff Long will have any significant backlash. Prior to the press conference Razorback fans were divided on the issue of the firing of BP. After the press conference, once we had all the important details, the vast majority of Hog fans support Long's decision. That isn't to say that we are not sad to see this happen, but it had to.
I concur with your thoughts on UofA hiring an interim coach for this season. The players and current coaching staff will pull together, and making a hasty move won't help. There are good quality coaches who will be interested in the UofA position...we need to be patient.
