Also, ESPN (and CBS) have had (and will continue to have) relationships with the SEC apart from "the SEC Network." Lesser Big Ten games used to be distributed on an ESPN subsidiary. This is not a new concept.

Interesting use of "penultimate." Anyway, wrote about all the conflicts of interest in the College Football Playoff back in December: http://aldland.wordpress.com/2013/12/11/equal-justice-under-college-football-playoff

Thanks for this reporting on reporting.

Possibly worth a note, and something that supports the immediacy of ESPN's NHL coverage, is that ESPN.com actually was leading with hockey last night: http://aldland.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/espnnhl.png. (If they had the broadcast rights to the NL Wild Card, that's probably not happening.)

Honorable mention to CUbsfan for transcribing the entirety of the FS1 broadcast of Utah State-Utah in the comments section.

Wow. This site already loads so slowly on all platforms, probably due to all of the advertisements, but auto-play video that defaults with the audio up really takes the cake. Like what you guys do here, but get with it.

Isn't it sort of odd that the spin chosen for this news item is jobs lost? Not to minimize the importance of that concern-- decisions have real consequences, and we probably ought to recognize them more often, not less often-- but I've never seen it raised in response to decisions like this before.

Cf. your post yesterday about USA Today's ramping up of sports coverage, which didn't cite jobs added as an upside of that decision.

Jalen's excellent and pretty fearless in the public arena. If you don't know about his podcast, the Jalen Rose Show, recommended reading: http://aldland.wordpress.com/2012/02/16/smackland-podcast-the-jalen-rose-show/
