@AlistairRussell  I know it's a cliché but I really don't think its an exaggeration in this case to say that if you can afford  to drop 100000+ euros on a watch , you can probably afford to  have someone wind it for you .

That said , I totally agree with your point , sadly it is not a problem I am ever likely to experience first hand .

I think the expix would make a great travel watch especially if teamed with a compact solar charger . I have been left in the lurch on several occasions when relying on my phone's GPS functionality in countries with poor or patchy mobile services .

This is the first smart watch that I would seriously consider purchasing . .

Kind of defeats the purpose of a display case back. Like many of the current iterations of this technology it screams afterthought and speaks of an unseemly rush to get something out there . Maybe they could incorporate a screen saver showing an animation of mechanical watch movement .

I am not usually a fan of "carbon " watches , but I do like the finish on this one . It almost looks like Damascus Steel from some angles . I would like to see one with a rotating inner bezel , but that would probably kill any price advantage it has .

I am old enough to remember the derision that was heaped upon the first wave of Japanese automobiles , today we have Lexus and the Toyota 86 . The Swiss should be very worried . The emergence of the Chinese watch industry will make the "quartz crisis" look like a storm in a tea cup ! China has more millionaires than many countries have people and they are very nationalistic / patriotic . I fear the Euro industry may find themselves living in interesting times .

When I see "carbon" used in this context , I think "cheap" , not "hi tech" !

5 months, 1 week ago on ITAnano Phantom Carbon Automatic 49 Watch Review

Reply

"Carbon" , particularly in this form is NOT a futuristic material , nor is it a rare or exclusive material ! Injection moulded carbon reinforced plastic has been used in cheap fishing reels for at least the last  30 years to the point of ubiquity.

While this material is light and strong and will resist impacts , it is relatively soft compared to just about any other case material and will mark and scratch very easily.

This is what I picture when I hear the term" Dive Watch" (this or a Sub') , but I fear that Rolex has become a victim of their own success . They have been the subject of so many homages and blatant copies over the years that their style has become ubiquitous or even generic . I think that the Rolex enthusiast  of fifty years hence will be salivating over new releases that look remarkably similar to what we see in the present day catalogue .

Don't lose to much sleep worrying about future Rolex enthusiasts ability to "understand" this watch . Most current Rolex enthusiasts that I have come across can recite every dial , hand , band and script colour combination ever produced , the reason behind said variations , and what day of the week they were introduced . I can't see this or the watches themselves changing all that much in the future . .
