@gmac124  "Do you believe that todays college graduates received the same quality of education that was given graduates 30 years ago?" I'm sorry, I can't answer that without some definition of parameters. I realize that more and more people are getting college educations now, but it is gradually becoming more technical and specific. I would say that the students at my alma mater are getting a better education than in the past. When I was teaching in the California State Universities 30 years ago, I saw a huge difference in the two schools I taught in. Some of it was related to how many hours the students had to work to afford their education, and some of it was the attitude of the faculty and alumni.

I think it is possible for a student to get a better education now than in the past, but most are not getting the well roundedness that my generation could afford. Those who went to school in the 70's missed out on a lot.

@patti is ticked  @realitycheck" An oath of allegiance to your Government would be to you...unless it were the current government." It wouldn't matter who was in office. Asking a spy to take an oath of allegiance is meaningless. I am not a liar or a traitor. I would not sell out the US. You are being ridiculous.

@realitycheck  @patti is ticked That had nothing to do with the University of California. I was still in high school and decided that on my own. Why can't you recognize that people do things in spite of their surroundings?

@realitycheck  @patti is ticked I don't know where the comma was, but, yes, I said the pledge many times before 1954 and did not choose to insert the phrase, Under God. It certainly didn't mean I was a communist. I was an agnostic and didn't believe that phrase belonged in the pledge. Where are you coming from?

@gmac124  @realitycheck I can't account for people who got poor educations. I did my best to teach, and I did my best to learn. I couldn't believe getting notes from a PE teacher who couldn't spell exercise. I saw how low the education of teachers was when I was substituting. I will not apologize for that. However, I would challenge you to find a poorly educated graduate from the University of California.

@patti is ticked  @realitycheck "Basically, what you admit here is that you are a fucking LIAR and a Traitor. You'd sell out America to get what you want." Okay, let me walk you through it. I had no desire to be a traitor to our government, so I had nothing to lose with the oath. The absurdity was that if I was undercover and trying to subvert our government, I would have taken the oath anyway. It didn't mean anything. I will still say the Pledge of Allegiance and stand whenever the Star Spangeled Banner is played, but I won't say the phrase, "under God." I was once called out on that, and I replied that I am a citizen but do not agree with that phrase. I do the same with the Nicene creed.

@gmac124  @eclecticsandra  @realitycheck Certainly you, GMAC, must realize the life benefits of a liberal arts degree. Of course you don't expect to make a lot of money, but you have a broad understanding of academia. I had to get mine later after so much concentration on science. I still regret that I didn't learn more about history and literature.

@realitycheck" It must have scarred you for life to have to "complete an affidavit disclaiming belief in the overthrow of the U.S. government"" I was not scarred for life, but I remember the thinking that I had to do. We had lost a lot of good teachers to the loyalty oath, and I really needed the money. I decided that I should be loyal to borrow the money, so I would go along with it. Taking the oath did nothing to assure anyone that I wouldn't turn on the government. It was meaningless and absurd.

@realitycheck  @patti is ticked  @Rowwdy REality, thank you for the references. I am sure McCarthy had some basis for his attacks, but there was a climate that allowed him to gain a foothold. The spin off was terrible. Black lists on entertainers. These were people with no government responsibility. We even had to take Loyalty Oaths. To get an NDEA loan in 1960, I had to swear to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The big joke was that communists probably would lie. My campus was the target of an FBI film which indicated that our campus was full of communists. We weren't. The people that got washed down the steps with fire hoses were ordinary students. The "witch hunt" resulted in a terrible back lash. I hope we stop before we get to that level again.

@realitycheck n.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Association_of_Scholars  I really doubt that the Regents asked for this report. NAS is very biased and has principles that do not make me think I would be interested in its findings.

@patti is ticked "murders that take place with weapons other than GUNS...something you and your ilk seem unaware of." That is not correct. There are all sorts of weapons that are used in murder. How is that relevant to gun safety? Do I post all the articles about kids killing their siblings? No. It's not a matter of numbers, it's a matter of responsibility. Maybe some background checks will prevent many of the suicides and murders. It won't hurt.

Don't you realize you are being played by the people who want to discredit Obama at any cost? This will go down with the McCarthy era as another witch hunt.
