2 days, 1 hour ago on Yasmani Grandal could make trading Matt Kemp palatable
random thought, but if AJ is that bad at framing pitches imagine how good Kershaw would be pitching to somebody else.
@DBrim or the Sox on Cabrera.
2 days, 2 hours ago on Yasmani Grandal could make trading Matt Kemp palatable
fun with numbers:
The 8 starting position players for the Dodgers in 2014 totaled 22.8 WAR
If you replaced the old guys (Hanley, Dee, Kemp, Ellis) with the new guys (Rollins, Kendrick, Pedersen, Grandal) in 2014 they would have totaled 24.3 WAR.
Do the same for SP and you go from 15.8 to 18.7
@Mike Petriello @Uncultured Bastard partially because overpaying makes trading guys a lot harder and partially because eventually that bubble will burst. i don't care how much money you have, you don't want to be paying $100MM for utility men and pinch hitters.

@Purple Drank @internet baseball fan potato friend @nsxtasy that's the devil's doing.
1 week ago on Report: Jimmy Rollins Would Play For the Dodgers, And That’s Great News
@BlueMarvin @isanz33 except that we need a catcher to play when kershaw isn't pitching a lot more than we need a 6th outfielder.
@BlueMarvin @Weston T baseball players are humans. Humans are lazy. The dude can live like a king and never have to work a day in his life. I'm not saying that he is doing that, but I wouldn't put it past him. Or anybody.
1 week, 6 days ago on The Only Bad Matt Kemp Trade Is A Bad Matt Kemp Trade
@Dodgers Nerd I go in and out on the PED thing all the time, but the problem with your argument is that there are people who played who didn't use PEDs so their numbers wouldn't be inflated.
@nsxtasy @Weston T @Dodgers Nerd also Ethier is 32. Wouldn't call that old. I think he's ideal for a team with a lower payroll (assuming the Dodgers can cover a good chunk of the salary) who is looking for a potential extra power bat to compete. I can see him doing well in Tampa. I can see him going to SF and hitting 30 homeruns.
I don't want Matt Kemp traded because he is my favorite Dodger. I also don't want him traded because he is VERY GOOD. I also don't want him traded because of the 6 potential OF we have going into this season, there are 4 other guys I'd rather see go first. Rational or irrational, that's how I feel.
That being said, if the return made sense - an upgrade at Catcher (which I'm not convinced Grandal is after just one great season), an actual SS who is both good at defense and can hit - a REALLY solid bullpen piece or two, I might feel better about it.
Also, while I agree that having RH power bats isn't an essential, it's sure a nice to have. Losing Hanley & Kemp in the same offseason would be detrimental. Those two were combined for 24% of the team's doubles and 28% of the team's homeruns on the season.
i would love to have Jon Lester on the Dodgers. Just surprises me that it's a priority right now at all.
1 week, 6 days ago on Dodgers finally enter Jon Lester sweepstakes
my biggest concerns:
- who is going to start at SS?
- who is going to platoon with AJ when Kersh isn't pitching?
- who is going to not suck in the bullpen?
- who are the end of our rotation guys aside from Haren?
those can all come from trades and/or in the Dodger's system. There will be a team who bites on Ethier or Crawford or both.
2 weeks, 2 days ago on Don’t Panic About Lack Of Dodger Offseason Moves
@baeksu @finleysgrandslam presumably not a right handed power bat, though, because then why would they trade for him in the first place?
2 weeks, 3 days ago on 2014 Dodgers in Review: UT Chone Figgins
so i'm probably really late to this conversation, but if Kemp gets traded then we're left with Ellis, Uribe, SVS, and Puig with any Right-handed "power." Not ideal.
@2B15Lopes they probably scheduled that in July
1 month ago on Dodgers Reportedly Add Three More To Front Office: Bream, Carr, Finley
I'm not sure if Russ (yeah I call him Russ) would have issues with coming back to the Dodgers. It's different ownership and a VERY different front office. He'd get a chance to play for a competitive team and with some of his old friends, for a fanbase that still loves him plus make a lot of money. It doesn't seem that far fetched.
1 month, 1 week ago on How Much Competition Would The Dodgers Have For Russell Martin?
so I've pretty much taken a huge break from baseball since about Game 5 of the World Series. Tried not to read or talk about it too much. Finally getting back to things. Here is my big ask to the new front office: Try not to get caught up in the fact that you've got a seemingly unlimited budget. Stick to your guns, take advantage of the money when you need to, but you don't need to overload this team with expensive talent. Yes, having the best player possible at each position puts you in a better position to win, but it almost never turns into a championship. Be smart. Find the needs of the team (IE bullpen) and try to fix those things rather than just stockpiling sluggers.

I'll believe that Maddon isn't going to be the Dodgers Manager when I see him sign with another team.
1 month, 3 weeks ago on Joe Maddon is now a free agent, are the Dodgers next?
@Dustin Nosler what defines prospect-eligible then?
2 months ago on Plenty of Dodgers’ prospects on BA’s postseason Top 20 lists
do international free agents make these lists? no, right?
just a reminder, and I know it's been said a million times. if you are routing for the Giants in the NLCS, then you are not a Dodgers fan.
2 months ago on Andrew Friedman Is Going To Do Something That Infuriates You
would you trade Kershaw and Puig for Ferandez and Stanton?
@Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @yudodis but MadbumClutchtoberPitch
@DodgerDodger @finleysgrandslam I think the Giants have been luckier than the Royals. But I also think their luck is powered by Satan, and that Satan will ensure their luck runs through the rest of October.
@Bay_of_Puigs @finleysgrandslam ha. no i was just being lazy. the giants would figure out a way to do that, though.
@Bay_of_Puigs @finleysgrandslam but what are the better options?
@capnsparrow sometimes I think there are people who really think like that. people who really should know better.
Also. I have finally accepted the fact that the Giants are going to win another World Series and that we are going to see at least three out of these four things: Vogle Perfect Game, Joe Panik walk-off, Buster Posey bases clearing double in the top of the 15th to go up by one.
@Sad Towel @DodgerDodger @Sugar-Free Generic Grape Soda @Disgruntled Goat those two things are kind of related. when you've got a .287 OBP, you don't really have as many shots at stolen bases.
i am ok with having a few unknowns in in the lineup. especially if they are coming from within our system and don't cost us any form of lengthy, bloated contracts, bad trades, or lost draft picks.
we signed Guerrero & Arrebabuerena (yeah) for a lot of money. if we''re not going to trade them (and we're not) then why wouldn't we want to give them an opportunity to play in the big leagues?
per Eric Stephen, the other day, "This is the same guy who gave James Loney a $21MM deal."
I'm looking forward to shaking things up. There are a few guys I'd like to keep around (Kershaw, Ryu, Greinke, Kemp, Jansen, Gonazalez) but the rest of the team I could go with or without.
hmm. Top 10 offensive teams by WAR in 2014: 9 of 10 made the postseason. Cardinals were 11th.
Top 10 pitching teams by WAR in 2014: 2 of 10 teams made the postseason.
2 months ago on Hyun-Jin Ryu shares his Jin Ramen with fake Dodgers teammates
@DodgersFan also. agree with Mike that payroll won't be down to $190, but it can be less than it was last year without sacrificing a whole lot.
2 months, 1 week ago on Russell Martin: Former Dodger, Future Dodger?
@DodgersFan why are people still asking to trade kemp?
@Mike Petriello i always pictured you as an apple guy
@Purple Drank @finleysgrandslam true. but Martin does.
Would be so pumped to have Russ back. Ellis is a fan favorite, and a great leader, but really didn't produce at all during the regular season. he was great in the NLDS, but you can't count on that happening again. Problem with Martin (or any other catcher) is that they're so much better off going to an AL squad where they can play every day without having to catch every day.
@Tymathee nope. Go Cards.
@Mike Petriello @Table our new super GM is going to be able to convince the Indians that Santana should be their starting catcher and then trade Ethier straight up for Gomes.
2 months, 1 week ago on Resetting the Dodgers 40-Man Roster For The Winter
i'm guessing that Tuesday was the last time we'll see Ethier in a Dodgers uniform.
@BIah probably somewhere in between
@BlueMarvin @finleysgrandslam I'm not saying I don't want a new GM. But right now it's not really going to make me feel any better. Maybe it will next year or during the winter if he/she makes some great moves. Right now it's just a PR move, though.
2 months, 1 week ago on As The Ned Turns
You're all just grasping for anything positive to hang onto. Firing Ned doesn't bring us back into the NLCS or magically erase the fact that the Satan Series is about to start. I'd love to see him gone, but I'm not saying Ned is the difference between this year and a Championship team.
@Raul Franklin @finleysgrandslam funny thing is that that was pretty much the most Puig thing he could possibly do.
