@GiveGartneraCup 100% agree. The loss of Stralman is going to HURT. I don't blame Stralman at all. The way he played last season, he earned the money. Tampa's offer was only slightly higher than NY's. It sounds like if the Rangers had moved at all as a gesture, say $250K, Stralman would've budged. Cally was asking too much - Stralman wasn't.

Have to disagree on St. Louis. He hasn't been here long enough (and likely won't be here long, either) to be the captain of this team. I'm fine with giving him an A, but not the C. I love Marty, but I think if this team is going to be successful, they need a strong core to build around, and Marty is not that guy.

On an unrelated note, I have a brand new copy of NHL15 for PS3 that has never been used that I'm selling for $35. The only catch is that I'm keeping the cover because I got it autographed, but I'll make you a color copy of it (you won't even notice). If anyone's interested, let me know. I'm not a gamer.

Can Richards finally get some love around here?  I firmly believe that had Richards been bought out after last season, not only are the Rangers not in the conference finals, but they're not even in the playoffs.

Yes, he makes a lot of money.  But honest to god I wouldn't want to be without him right now.  His post-game locker room interviews have sounded almost identical whether they've won or lost, and I think that's THE reason the Rangers didn't over-celebrate their elimination of the Penguins like the Canadiens did after eliminating the Bruins.

I really hope that he's back next season.  And here's some math for you: http://proicehockey.about.com/od/nhlnewsscoresstats/fl/NHL-Salary-Cap-How-much-should-teams-commit-to-their-star-players.htm

As obnoxious as it is to listen to, I hope the Canadiens keep whining because it will only hasten their demise.  They got too high after winning their series against Boston and now they're focusing on the wrong things (which would be everything OTHER than their own weak play).  Keep it up, Montreal!

The reason we're winning can be seen in the fact that Brad Richards looks and sounds virtually the same in his post-game locker room interviews whether the Rangers win or lose.  After both series wins, his message was essentially "that was nice, but we have a long way to go."  LEADERSHIP.

Having said that, it sucks that now all we're going to hear about any Rangers victory is that it was HANDED to them because Kreider TOOK OUT Price (which is total crap).  I'd much rather the Rangers beat the Habs with Price in net so they have no excuses.

I for one could not be happier for Richards, since I've never wanted him to be bought out, despite repeated insistence of its "necessity" by ~95% of NYR Blog commenters (EHRMAGERD, if the Rangers don't buy out Richards, it will doom the franchise for the next decade - GASP!!!).

There is ZERO chance that without his leadership in that room, especially after the Callahan trade, that the Rangers make it this far.  Yeah, he had a bad season last year; yeah, he's older; yeah, it's a big cap hit.  But 7-0 in Game 7s?  Put a price tag on that for me, please.  Also, listening to him in pre- and post-game interviews, you just know you are listening to a future coach -- and in all likelihood a damn good one. Hate on haters, but when the Rangers move onto the finals, it will be because of Lundqvist (1/3), Richards (1/3), then everything else (1/3).

You want to buy out someone?  Buy out Nash (not that I'm sure that's the right call, but he's certainly a more deserving candidate for it than Richie is).  I'm sick of all the hating on Richards.

Yeah, a few years ago... when Yzerman snubbed Marty in the Olympics for the first time.

I highly doubt Cally re-signs with Tampa.  He played briefly with Pyatt in the AHL and played with Malone for the US internationally, but that's about it in terms of affiliation with the team.  Unless the Lightning make it to the conference finals or better (which, despite Stamkos, is a long shot), I think he'll go elsewhere.  If it's really about money, I could see him signing with the Sabres (which is also super close to family).  If it's about winning, I think he'd take less to go somewhere like St. Louis.

But for the love of god, he should fire his agent.  That guy is both a dick and an idiot.

I find it hilarious (and by hilarious I mean annoying) that so many people are saying that Staal is "worth the risk" but Callahan was injured way too often.  How about a little math:

Callahan's NHL regular season games played from 08-09 season (when he was a full-time NHLer) thru his first 2 games with TBL: 386, which averages out to a little over 64 games/season, meaning he's missed an average of 22% of games.

Staal's NHL reguar reason games played from 07-08 season thru games played this season: 443, which averages out to a little over 63 games/season, meaning he's missed an average of 23% of games.

Huh, that's pretty much a push, isn't it?  It's completely fair to argue that you feel Staal is a more valuable asset, but if you were one of those using the "we can't throw cash at Callahan to sit in the press box in a cast," please don't now be saying that Staal's injuries are "behind him" or somehow not a factor to be considered.

I love both players, and of course freak injuries can happen to any player at any time, but can we please get a little consistency here?

For everyone who's freaking out about offering Callahan 6 years:

1. How many players nowadays stay with one team for their entire career? Not Many. So while I personally would like to see him retire as a Ranger, if management wants to, they can always trade him in year 4, 5 or 6.

2. No one knows what the cap will be next year or any year after that, so stop freaking out about numbers that are, at this point, imaginary.

3. How have the Rangers played the past 2 seasons without Cally in the lineup? Not well. But yeah, let's trade him. That will definitely work well for us in the playoff push this year.

But please now feel free to resume your hate fest toward the captain everyone loved so much until the past month or so.  I want no part in that.

People think Cally is injured too often, but want Kesler?  He's injured just as often as Cally.  I like both players, but St. Louis has been healthy far more consistently than Kesler.

Also, trading Callahan, Girardi AND Stepan?  What does that remind me of?  Oh yeah - trading Dubinsky, Gaborik, etc. and letting Prust walk.  It took the Rangers a while to come back from such a major roster overhaul.  I'm not saying it's not a good idea for the right new pieces, but if you're going to move that many core players from a roster, I think the impacts of that need to be considered very, very carefully.

@GRight.  Because there are a ton of those available.  Oh and you want one for less than what Richie's making?  No problem!  Because elite guys are always willing to play for less money and teams are always willing to part with them in exchange for low round draft picks and 3rd & 4th liners.

I apologize for directing this in a reply to you here, G, but I feel like I hear this a lot on this blog.  As if buying out Richards is this magical solution.  Or sure, trade Henrik if he asks for 8 years or Cally or Girardi if they ask for more than $5M.  Because there are a ton of equivalent players available to replace them with for less money/years.

It seems like everyone is quick to say dump this guy!  Get that guy!  OK, great.  But we're gonna get Evander Kane for significantly less?  I mean, maybe.  Gomez to Montreal and McDonagh back?  Hell yeah I'd take another one of those.  But that's a once in a decade lucky break.  And yeah, Kane's younger, which is great, but he's not the playmaker that Richards is, nor does he have Richie's vision, which is not as great.

Not that I'm any smarter, and maybe it would be better to buy him out.  But it seems like the people who yell the loudest for buyouts/trades/etc don't take into account that it's not just shopping - you don't just say "here's $6M, we'd like to lease Antti Niemi, for 4 years, please."

Why couldn't this have waited until after tonight's game so I could enjoy that in peace?  Damnit.

I know Girardi hasn't been overly popular around here and Cally's had health issues (and full disclosure: I'm also originally from Rochester), but I would be heartbroken to see either of them go.

7 years might be a little long, but we all know most players are traded before the ends of their contracts, and that you always start by asking for more than you think you're going to get.  And Sather wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't at least try to low-ball/test the waters.  That's how salary/contract negotiations work.

Also, everyone said that Dubinsky and Prust were totally not worth the money, and then when they were gone, all anyone could talk about was "damn, we traded away our heart and soul!"

Sometimes it's not about the stats.  I think the Rangers are a better team with Girardi and especially with Cally that we'd be without them.

Seriously, I f---ing hate this.
