@Cold Pumpkin It's getting better, slowly but surely.
And also, since I haven't posted this in a while, Dee's attitude is MUCH better. He's laughing and joking around during BP like he did two years ago. The smile is back. He even got SVS to give him a piggyback ride across the dugout.
@Cecil Terwilliger @Sideshow Dave Aw, be nice to my "cousin" Tony. He was a good guy. I have no idea what happened to him. One day he was just gone. Kinda like that photographer on the Daily Wildcat staff who vanished after Ozzfest. Damn back stage passes + open bar nearly destroyed us both.
@Dang88(Uribe Nutritionist) Van Slyke's Fu Manchu alone is sexier than the Babe.
@Cold Pumpkin It's a good sign. He's starting to get more bunts down for base hits, too. It's just a matter of being consistent from game-to-game. Same with his defense.
@Cecil Terwilliger Agreed on Jon. I know a couple of the copy editors at ESPNLA, but unfortunately I don't believe either of them handles Saxon's stuff. If they did, "typos" like that wouldn't get through.
@Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado) @Cecil Terwilliger Again (sigh)
@Cecil Terwilliger The guys in the press box can't hear Vin's broadcast. They have TVs up there, but the sound is either muted or they can't hear it over the insanely loud music played at Dodger Stadium (with Nancy's organ being the exception). And I don't know if they look at Twitter, but they should have asked the Dodgers media rep sitting there with them. I always ask the Topes rep if there's a record-related question/factoid.
@Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado) I will say this, most journalists are at least better at math than most (but not all) baseball players. And we're definitely better than the players employed at MLBN. Those guys ... sometimes it just hurts to listen to them. TWTW.
@Cecil Terwilliger This the problem nowadays with "get it out first!" trumps "get it out there but make sure it's factually correct!" We saw that all over the mess with CNN and friends up in Boston recently. There is a downside to the Twitter-fueled world we now live in. I mean, besides people still asking me if SVS can move to 3B. Or Puig. Or both. (sigh)
@Tony Fernandez (SVS Afficionado) Absolutely not. But sometimes I wonder how many reporters can even compute that number.
Not to defend Mark Saxon or anything unthinkable like that, but I gotta point out something about most journalists and sabermetric stats like wOBA and WAR and ERA+ and all that. The reason we don't use a lot of it, or understand it, is because we suck at math. No, really, it's the one thing almost every newspaper-trained writer has in common. Our math skills are terrible. I'm willing to still use advanced metrics, even if I could in no way compute them on my own. But most guys are of the mindset that "if I can't understand, I ain't gonna use it."
I took one math class in college. ONE. And I got a C. In my defense, I slept through most of it. (My freshman year roommate snored so loud you could hear him down the hall; a lot of my drinking that year was just to help myself fall asleep amid the racket.) So I really doubt Saxon or a lot of the guys took much more math or did a whole lot better grade-wise.
So this, in my humble opinion, is why you sometimes get stats and comparisons as ridiculous as SVS is putting up Babe Ruth numbers. And yes, ABQ ABQ ABQ (even with the humidor), but in all actuality, the person who would get the biggest kick out that ludicrous comparison is Scott himself. I'll make sure to mention it to him on Sunday. He always enjoys hearing about some of the nuttiness out there.
@Mike Petriello @Chris Jackson Thanks. Even though I'm now older than everyone on the team except Amezaga (by 3 1/2 months).
I'm technically off today because I'm in charge of this: http://nmdarksidebrewcrew.com/2013/05/03/abq-beer-week-join-us-in-the-dark-ages/
But I suppose I could head over to Isotopes BP and ask Dee and Lo if any of this stuff is true or just the LAT blowing stuff out of proportion again. I'd rather this be my day off. And tomorrow's my birthday. Can you all wait until Sunday?
Going home now. Will chat more tomorrow. Day game awesomeness awaits with a 12:05 pm (Mountain time) start!
@Bluebloodla92 @Chris Jackson Honestly, I have no idea. Baseball is way too unpredictable. I'd hope they both succeed because they're both good guys, but this game is often unfair. It's right place, right time a lot of the time.
@not moderator I need new pics, but the Topes don't have them available yet. Hopefully next homestand. Gotta show skinny Scott (not to mention all the new guys who all my pics are either Getty from ST or other teams).
Topes game story: http://www.examiner.com/article/van-slyke-vanquishes-the-shift-as-isotopes-roll-to-victory
I focused on Van Slyke up top after the Magill feature ran earlier today, but there's some good Magill stuff at the bottom, including an interesting final quote from him about why he lasted only four innings (it's nothing bad, just intriguing).
@capnsparrow He threw 92 pitches in his last start. No idea why he was capped at 71 tonight. I'll find out after the game (hopefully).
@capnsparrow @Chris Jackson @MMKowsari I had this discussion with Scott Van Slyke today. Tongues were planted firmly in cheek throughout.
"Hey, Scott, Dodger fans want you to move to third base. Can you play there?"
"Sure, I can play third base. Might need some practice, though."
"They're kind of panicking right now, aren't they?"
"Tell them not to worry. The Dodgers will just buy someone. It's what they do now."
"But there's no available to buy right now."
"I better find a (third base) glove."
@MMKowsari The Rays have no reason to trade him. He's young and cheap. They're going to look to move Price, probably this coming off-season, because he's not going to be cheap anymore.
And no, the Dodgers do not have the prospects to get Price. I doubt even a Puig-Lee-Reed-Pederson offer would get it done.
