@Deuce @Table It would make for a roster that had better value, but it's hard to argue that they could have spent their money in a different way that would have improved the team in 2013. Sure maybe a few different bench and bullpen moves, but other than that what could they have done to make a better roster? Complains about the team's current construction should be about how the future is compromised not the present.
The payroll does not mean much to me. It's only as high as it is because it's full of A) bad Ned Colletti signings, and B) Overpaid players the Dodgers were willing to take on in order to improve the team quickly. The current roster does not reflect the payroll, rather it reflects the circumstances.
Besides, the club's weaknesses right now are what? Kemp,Cruz, and Sellers? I have confidence Kemp will improve eventually. One of Sellers/Cruz will be replaced by Hanley, and the other spot can be filled by another move. The current Dodger weaknesses are far preferable to say....Crawford and Adrian being horrible and signed for eternity.
I'm ok with this season being a "disastor" if it means the end of the Colletti era.
Righteous post
@Bob Meripol @Mike Petriello @Table Well at least he doesn't have a large platoon split. Hopefully Mattingly splits them up with Kemp who should hit 4th anyways
Say Uribe replaces Hanley. What then of the lineup?
I imagine it would have been something like:
Crawford/Ethier/Kemp/Gonzalez/Ramirez/Cruz/Ellis/Ellis
or
Crawford/Ellis/Kemp/Gonzalez/Ramirez/Ethier/Cruz/Ellis
(Note that I personally would not have it this way, it's just what I had expected of Mattingly)
Does Ethier now definitely move somewhere 3/4/5 in order to replace Hanley?
If Uribe does get his power back....will it be due to Mark McGwire?
@Bob Meripol Well if Andruw Jones can do it I guess Uribe could too
@Dave Pomerantz @Table and actually the stats like him at 3rd as much as they do at SS. So you could go Putno 3rd, Cruz SS. That might be better.
....as highly as guys like Adam Everett, Craig Council, Caesar Izturis, Jack Wilson, etc
Well I'm eager to see what he can do. Advanced stats rate him
I think Punto at SS would be fine. He's ass good as Jamey Carroll. Not as high OBP, but much better defensively and on the basepaths.
Injuries happen. Sure David Wright was injured while playing in the WBC, but Chase Headley was injured during spring training. At least the Dodgers have plenty of options to play SS if he needs to miss any time. Dee Gordon, Nick Punto, Luis Cruz, Justin Sellers, Juan Uribe, and Ellian Herrerra, can't get much deeper than that.
"Well, here’s one reason why"
Whats the reason? Playing in the WBC puts him at risk of injury?
Yeah cause you would never dive for a line drive during a spring training game, right.
@JoeyE If you make the comparison, Punto is in fact one of the very best backup middle infielders in baseball. Mike makes fun of him way too much.
I can see why the Dodgers would be interested in Bourn. Who do they currently have to bat leadoff? AJ Ellis would be the correct choice, but Don is unlikely to go there. That leaves Mark Ellis? Carl Crawford? Luis Cruz? Yikes!
I wonder what it would be like to have representative rule rather than majority rule.....
