Well a big problem with prisons is Prohibition. It is Stalinist. We should end it.
Nixon went after cannabis to jail his political enemies. The essence of Stalinism."Look, we understood we couldn't make it illegal to be young or poor or black in the United States, but we could criminalize their common pleasure. We understood that drugs were not the health problem we were making them out to be, but it was such a perfect issue...that we couldn't resist it." - John Ehrlichman, White House counsel to President Nixon on the rationale of the War on Drugs.

Do not underestimate the influence of organized crime in resisting the end of Prohibition.
When are the Prohibitionists going to stop the mass murder?

@JustinMichels The worst is the "regulate like alcohol" groups. What that means in effect is that we will get legal cartels and high taxes. An improvement to be sure. But so far I have seen none of the major groups even inching away from "treat it like alcohol".
3 months, 2 weeks ago on Federal Cannabis Spending Bill Widely Misunderstood
Now take into account the rescheduling hearing in CA. If Cannabis is no longer schedule 1 the spending bill for DC will have some interesting effects because it specifically mentions scheduling (CSA). Curious.
@KathleenChippi @Kathryn Rifkin We need to fight the idea that treating cannabis like alcohol/tobacco is good policy. It was good policy last year. This year we need to get government out of the business altogether.
Until we treat cannabis like tomatoes people will still get killed over it. Eric Garner. Harassed over cigarette taxes. Ultimately killed for failure to OBEY.

@RussellKallio To make the test stick legally they will have to run studies on impairment vs test results.
But likely they will just make the standard per se. Because we say so. Or in the vernacular FYTW.

The high taxes proposed almost everywhere for cannabis are another way of preserving the Black market. Taxes will need to be paid and like Eric Garner showed - people will get killed to enforce this policy. Cannabis should be no more regulated than tomatoes.

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Justice denied: Supreme Court ends a 50-year saga
@sillyfugger A court case - if they lost - would set precedent. A settlement would not.
Here is a Nixon henchman on why they refused to reschedule:
@Kathryn Rifkin What is also odd is that it was thought by Republicans in 1914 that the Federal government had no jurisdiction over drugs. It is one of the reasons Alcohol Prohibition got an amendment.
Modern day Republicans are mostly of a different opinion.
@KathleenChippi @Simon1 @weed_the_people @JustinMichels None the less a justice said that if what had been introduced in the Supreme Court had been in the trial record he would have ruled differently.
That information is in this trial record with practically no rebuttal.
My guess (I could be wrong) is that the government threw this case so that they would not have to take the political heat for rescheduling. A number of commenters discussing this at another place made this point.
The fact that the court even allowed this issue to come up in an ordinary pot grow case is odd. And the rationale for that is somewhat convoluted.
If it was done for the reasons I stated it speaks to the cowardice of Obama who could (through the Justice Dept.) reschedule any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
@weed_the_people @JustinMichels This will go to the Supreme court IMO. One justice has said that if what was presented to the Supremes in Raich had been in the record they would have ruled differently.
It has been a few years. What we need is in the record from this trial.
@generousteve We should be careful about taxes. They will require men with guns to enforce. People will get killed,
Ah yes. The Catholic Church. The political arm of a religion founded by a guy who was more or less anti-political. The mention of that Church always brings a smile (ironic) to my face.
My understanding of the message of Jesus is "listen to God". The message of the Church? "Listen to us - we have men (and a few women) listening to God all the time so you don't have to." Too funny.

Lots of similar comments. I blame socialism. And Prohibition is an essential element of socialism. And you ought to look up "Milton Friedman prohibition socialism" . Prohibition is socialist because it is a form of price support for criminals. As if we didn't have enough criminals without it.
And funny thing: the Progressives have duped the right into supporting this particular form of socialism. Clever boys.
