@zioncampo Hi Zion, thanks for the comment. I don't really understand what you mean, though. I would think a post-sex selfie would NOT have gotten the message across, "better" notwithstanding.

@Janette Toral Hi Janette :) Thanks for the question. It's social media marketing; the win is in the sentiments from the online audience (and in this case, from the digital and social industry) as well as the "talkability" of the brand online. For a day at least, KITKAT dominated websites, news channels, and industry blogs :) Can't complain about the value of those mentions and impressions.

@samir1988 Hi Samir. You're welcome, and thank you for the feedback. I'm always looking to learn how to improve on data gathering, and I find myself agreeing with your comment on using this survey as a 'snapshot' of sorts.

There might also be a big challenge in representing the country's population, seeing as data/Internet access is limited to a little over 1/3 of the population (Google PH, 2013). Mobile is big, but smartphone usage (needed for Instagram) is at a paltry 34% or so (CMO Mobile Summit, 2013).

What I will do is to revise the title of this article to "A Snapshot of Instagram Usage in the Philippines - 2014). That should add the proverbial grain of salt into the consumption of the survey results.

@samir1988 Hi Samir. Thank you for the feedback. I do apologize for the lack of resources at my disposal to conduct a survey with 1) a larger sample size and 2) a longer time-frame.

The sample size of 100 participants are: Facebook users (this was due to the assumption that as Instagram is not as 'developed' yet in usage in the PH, the adapters would be Facebook users first); random individuals of all age brackets and socio-economic classes (spread through social media and email to student-, casual-, and professional groups), and was done over a two-day period.

The respondents came from the major urban centers of Manila and Davao. I cannot say for sure if some were from the Visayas region as I did not actively propagate the survey to said region.

I was initially deliberating conducting multiple surveys (as the tool, SurveyMonkey, capped the participants at 100) but I felt the risk of doubling-up on some respondents might skew the data too much.

If you found the results inconsistent with your personal findings of Instagram usage behavior in the Philippines, I would be privileged to share in your own data, or collaborate on a revised one, resources granted. Thanks for dropping by and giving feedback!

@AusMatt Hi Matt, thanks for the comment. One of the biggest hurdles in marketing social media to businesses is the sheer novelty of it, especially for businesses which have been around for a long time, even before digital marketing became 'a thing'.
