I feel like they just scratched the surface of his acting abilities this past season. I'm hoping they keep pushing the direction they're going, shift him a little from mean to cranky, or just save the mean for the bad guys, mix it up with a new companion, and give him lots of words to say. I think he has yet to tap his full Doctor Who potential.

I don't know why they did a whole season at Coal Hill School and didn't give him a story. That wold have been lovely.

Remember, the first 50 Big Finish main range Doctor Who stories are only a couple dollars each, to download. I dove in last year after The Light at the End and have loved so very many of them, it's a treat. And PM soars!

All the most interesting companions end up not really being companions or they just stick around for one episode - Frank Skinner, Osgood would have been great, Handles, Captain Jack, Wilf, Craig, the list goes on. Give him an alien, an older woman, a man, a backing band, anything - please - Something new.
All my gushing aside, I do want PC to be more active next year. He needs to take center stage, and let's give the year long companion arc a rest for a bit.
1 week, 3 days ago on Poll: Capaldi’s Doctor – Hit or Miss?
Michelle Gomez was absolutely fantastic as The Master, who I've never really liked (just too cartoony, except in those Tom Baker stories where he's not doing so well ... ). I hope seriously they bring her back. My only quibble was that I don't like bad guys who are self-consciously "crazy" but then I realized it's all an act, and everything fell into place. More of her, please. What a talent!!
1 week, 3 days ago on DWM #480: Miss Me?
@AlessandroArsuffi Hah. I do this too. It shorts around. I will say, CB and McGann were low, until I started listening to Big Finish, where they are both EXCEPTIONAL. (and of course McGann was astounding in Night of the Doctor and just made me wish we had more of him on screen.)
PC is an amazing actor, bringing all sorts of levels and nuances to every single line and scene. He has a great range, and clearly loves the part and show. He's also riveting. I loved Matt, but I like PC's more grounded, nuanced approach. I get the sense that everyone else is trying to meet him at his level, because everyone's work this year became more focused, more confident and just generally better. PC may actually be my favorite doctor since Tom Baker. I think they could even push it further in the direction they're going.
@Zeldazelda That last scene was incredibly impactful. They both play it so well, and PC's anger in the TARDIS is both heartbreaking, and also made me feel bad for any villain who really makes him angry. Look out!

@ChristianBanford Her name is first, too. Hilarious.
@The Lazy Cat Needs Her Inhaler In a good way, I hope. I really liked Dark Water, and where everything has been going this season. I hope whatever happens, it accentuates that, and doesn't undercut it.

Can't - wait. Dark Water was, I think, perfect. PC is so very very good. Everyone seems to be doing their best to meet him at his level. More, please.

@calliarcale @TardisDad I'm watching it on iTunes this year too! It's not very expensive, it looks great on it, and I can't imagine how weird the pacing would feel with commercials I highly highly highly recommend watching it this way, if you can.

" -- nothing that you think is happening is happening… Nothing.” Oh dear ... This worries me. I loved this episode so much. If they back off, or reverse course or something, I will be very very disappointed. If you make strong choices like this hopefully you stick by them.
2 weeks, 3 days ago on What Further Secrets do Missy & Seb Hide?
Only 12? I loved this episode, top to bottom. One question though - Is St Paul's Cathedral Missy's TARDIS? My one caveat is that if Michelle Gomez doesn't stick around as The Mistress past next week, I will be very very very disappointed. She's fantastic.

@BombadilBalrog She's totally f*3king with him. This incarnation really seems to enjoy poking the bear.
2 weeks, 3 days ago on Poll: The Missy Reveal
@BenIsacremeeggRhodes That's what I think. I also think her Tardis is St Paul's Cathedral. Which would be awesome.
I like that there's a definite element to this persona that really enjoys messing with The Doctor, and if she did change her sex on purpose, I love that maybe she did it just to f&*k with him. It's different, it's new, and it's exciting. I guess the question is what happened to The Master on Gallifrey, from the time he went beck, for those several hundred years The Doctor was on Trenzalore, and did The Master have anything to do with his new regeneration cycle. We don't know what was happening on the other side of that crack ...
The Nethersphere has to be connected to regeneration, right? Maybe the Time Lords tap into it to come back, and they pull their "new" faces from the dead?

I'm pleased by the tone of this series, and the fact that the finale airs right after Halloween seems wholly appropriate.

3 weeks, 2 days ago on Why I Love… Nightmare in Silver
This one wasn't bad, per se, it was just sort of there. PC and JC continue to do some excellent work, Danny was lovely though I don't really know what to make of him, the kids were fine, the concept was very cool, and the direction was excellent! That crazy wide angle lens stuff in the Tardis was wild. So, all in all, some cool bits in a harmless package. I'd give it 7/10. Overall, however, series 8 still gets an 11/10 from me. Loving it as a whole!

@Deus_Ex_Machina I love him. The Doctor hasn't been this much of a badass since this first couple of years of Tom Baker. PC may now be my new favorite. And holy cow can that man act! Seriously, those scenes of him alone in the TARDIS could have been really flat, but no, they were electric and interesting and just awesome.

Great concept. Great acting. PC and JC were fantastic. And those monsters were genuinely horrifying, and hard to look at. A slightly rushed ending, which is why I gave it an 8/10, but this season continues to be my favorite since the show has come back. More from this writer, please, and this director!
10 / 10!! I hesitated voting it this high, because I've been voting a lot of the episodes this high this season, but I am really, really liking where we are and where we're going. I think, in retrospect, this episode nailed what I was looking for (and why I keep thinking Toby Whithouse should write for PC.) - The rich script and character moments were great. Also, PC is such a good actor, when you com in come in close on him, even if he's just sitting there, he's mesmerizing. My one sort of quibble is that it's not that I don't like Clara (I was never a fan of Rose, and Amy was okay ... ) I think I just yearn for something different in the Doctor / Companion relationship. If Clara had moved on, and the engineer had stepped in, that would have been great. But, alas, for me our time with the companions I want to see is fleeting at best (Captain Jack, Wilf, Rory's father, Handles and now the engineer). Hire this writer, and director again, Doctor Who. They are both excellent, and mix very well with PC. Huzzah!

@Administrator on the Orient Express Yeah, I gotta say, sadly, both of my kids act like her, as do all of their friends. I'd like to think I wasn't that way when I was her age, but I probably was. So I think they nailed it.

10/10! This concept was so wonderfully out there, and thus, surprising, I had no idea what was going to happen, which was a joy. Great writing. Some real meaty ideas to chew on. And once again, PC's acting was incredible, and everyone - cast and crew - rose to meet the high bar he sets. My one quibble - moronic, admittedly - What was the deal with Clara's eyebrows? Seriously! Did someone try to paint canoes over her eyes?
This is my favorite season since the series has come back. PC is a badass. Very punk. And it's very very refreshing. I also like that he is clearly inspiring everyone to work at his level, which is great. More, please.
I also like that everyone involved with the show at the moment seems to be challenging themselves, and the audience, and I applaud them for taking that approach. Risk is good.
Sorry, one more thought - I am eagerly awaiting the villain that really (really) ticks this doctor off. Look out!

Another great episode for me. 9/10. Excellent character work and dialogue and I could just watch PC talk to the camera for 45 minutes. He is bringing levels to his lines and finding new interesting things to do in each scene. A complete pleasure. Also, he's hilarious. I haven't laughed out loud at DW this many time in awhile. Well done!

1 month, 4 weeks ago on Rate & Discuss Time Heist
@The Tricksters Brigade My theory on this is that it suffered because it came right after a slam-bang opener which served as an intense kick off to a season long arc, while COTBS abandons that almost completely. On it's on, viewed as a one off, later, it's fine. So I blame placement. I actually watched it recently, on it's own, randomly, and it was fine.

Anything but yet another contemporary pretty young thing. As much as I love the contemporary pretty young things, I really just want something different. A robot dog! A time lady! I'm in the USA, and we recently cut our cable cords, so rather than wait for the DVDs to come to my local library, this season I've decided to buy and watch the show through iTunes on my iPad. And I must say, it's not that expensive and to be able to watch it with no commercials improves the pacing dramatically. I thought the pacing was fine before, but always a little wonky. Now, I can't imagine going back. Also, it looks beautiful!

I gave it a 7/10. Good but not great. A little too flip for me. But, I will say it was a joy to see that Peter Capaldi is as adept at comedy as he is at being a badass. He continues to excite me every time he comes on screen.

Didn't we start with this ver of Clara learning that her mother died, or am I misremembering it. If so, then the control thing totally tracks as does her losing 11, though It would have helped if it was overtly started, frankly, at the top. As written, she really just keep hitting the age thing and I suspect that's not the real issue. That fumble aside this was unquestionably her best episode and I feel like she finally became a character. It was nice to finally see the writing lean in to the emotion instead of run away from it. More, please.

" ... as she coped with the loss of both her mother and her friend, the unnamed mother of the Maitland children ... " Clara's mother died? Really? Wow, I completely missed that. If that's the case that gives her a great justification for wanting order and consistency in her life, and should absolutely have been played up here.

I thought the scene was lovely, and I'm pretty sure I welled up. Very well written, acted and directed.
2 months, 3 weeks ago on Moffat on THAT Deep Breath Cameo
I really liked this episode. I really liked the more thoughtful pacing. I loved the slightly more grown up tone. I absolutely loved Peter Capaldi and think he just energizes every since scene he's in. And I've never really been a fan of Clara as a character, simply because she was yet another pretty young thing / sorta kinda love interest, and I always thought she was a bit of a non-character. NOW, suddenly, she feels like a person, and with the ridiculous love / flirting element jettisoned, she came alive! The jokes felt particularly jokey against this new tonal backdrop, though, and a little out of place, and I really need Strax to become a character and less of a buffoon. That weird exam scene felt like filler. Little quibbles, overall, which is why I gave it an 8 out of 10.

So, do we think The Master was on the other side of that crack, and is somehow (partially? / wholly?) responsible for the Doctor getting a new round of regenerations? What's The Master been doing on Gallifrey since he went back there in the End of Time (I'm assuming that's what happened, anyway.)
5 months ago on Series 8: Master Finale Rumours
It's so easy. They do a part 1 of a 2 parter with just McGann. This can also serve as a "pilot". Part 2 is the next ep. with 12, for the 2nd half of the story. If it goes well, they could give McGann a little Children of Earth-esque miniseries.
5 months, 2 weeks ago on McGann Signed Petition for 8th Doctor Spin-off
OR - You do a McGann ep. that's all his, a flashback, part 1 of a 2 parter, and in part 2 the current doctor picks up / finishes the story. There are so many possibilities.
