Brooks just kills OKC. They are so discombobulated. There is so much dribbling, the spacing is terrible, the shot selection is worse. It's just a disaster. They get away with a lot because they have athletic, smart, and skilled players. But I don't think they play good team basketball, and that's on the coach.
9 months, 1 week ago on Andre Iguodala crushes souls as the Warriors top OKC, 116-115
Winning on the road, in Utah no less, is nothing to sneeze at. Durant wasn't his normal locked in shooting self, Ibaka was awful, and the team is integrating 3 guys who are essentially rookies in Adams, Lamb, and Jones. When Russell gets back in two weeks this is the best team in the Western Conference on talent. Of course, Brooks is still coaching it so...

Sure OKC doesn't have the Lakers TV contract, but they appear on national TV frequently and have the exact same salary restrictions as every other team. The only thing that makes a team 'small market' is having an owner unwilling to spend for the luxury tax.... So Clay Bennett and his criminal friend Aubrey McClendon might be 'small market' owners, but that's their own fault. They are running a business, not a competitive basketball team. The main disaster, as always, was letting James Harden walk for what amount to 20 cents on the dollar. And I think it's safe to say the Thunder greatly underestimated just how good Harden actually was, or else they would have done deals differently to keep him around. Instead of having 3 top 15 players in the NBA, the Thunder now have two superstars and ... Serge Ibaka, who while talented, has the basketball IQ of a medium sized grapefruit. So while I do understand ownership trying to save money and turn a profit, even though that's not the point for many NBA owners who are wealthy without needing their teams to profit, it's hard to forgive the basketball sin of breaking up a fearsome group of players in order to save a buck.

Presti's commitment to Growth Mindset is impressive, but the fact remains, OKC gave up one of the 10 best players in the NBA, and arguably a top 5-7 player, for nowhere near the same level of player. He's trying to justify his mistake. As well as the mistake of playing Kendrick "Negative PER" Perkins 30 minutes per game in the playoffs. Presti is the best GM in sports, but these two mistakes, in addition to the unfortunate Westbrook injury, doomed this season.

@Militoni21 @WaltFreezer Are you in English lit?
@Militoni21 What a trained eye you have to spot the deficiency in Scott Brooks. Have you considered a career in reading billboards along the side of the road?
@Militoni21 You think there are better coaches? Do you also think the Pope is a Catholic?
@kfmsooner Brooks sucks. Sloan is an excellent coach. Big difference.
@Lasch @PerkPush-ups Wrong.
@Fuzzy Logic good point.
@MostJadedGamer @FallenOSIRIS Wrong.
This is spot on. The basic key is that Scott Brooks is the problem. There are roughly 29 coaches in the NBA better than Brooks at actually coaching basketball. I'll give him the win over Vinny Del Negro. It's easy to sit on Durant and Westbrook and (previously) Harden and get decent results, but Brooks largely minimizes what is an incredibly talented group. Remove Brooks and this is still a championship contender, Westbrook or no Westbrook. And I love Westbrook.
1 year, 3 months ago on How much do the Thunder miss Harden right now?
Scott Brooks would not win a knife fight if he brought a gun.

Rather long championship window? That left the day Harden went out the door. They'll be lucky to get past Memphis, they definitely aren't winning the West this year. And they aren't even in the same area code as the Heat, as currently constructed. Russ returning next year makes them the Western Conference favorites again, but they aren't some lock to continue to make the Finals unless both stars stay healthy.
1 year, 3 months ago on Kevin Durant ices the Grizzlies in Game 1, 93-91
Of COURSE it is Brooks' fault and has been for years. For absolutely everything that Presti has done right, loyalty to a well-below-mediocre coach has been the giant thorn in the Thunder's side.

Not a scoring problem. Just only a few guys who are good at scoring. I phrased it wrong. Maybe ibaka better this year. Maybe PJ3 or Maynor? KD and Russ need help from rest of team. Feel like they lost the leg to a chair. Still be good, but not title good.
1 year, 9 months ago on Thunder trade James Harden to Houston
First big mistake by Presti. Cost Thunder a legit title run. Harden a star - deserves to get paid like one. Quibbling over 6 mil, team should have bit the bullet - kept championship nucleus together. Finals notwithstanding, Harden a 23 yr old stud with high ceiling and good two way player. Martin a huge downgrade defensively and iq wise. Lamb? Maybe in 2 years. Okc has tough time scoring: see brooks, Scott. Just got tougher. Chemistry just got muddled. Spurs/Clippers/Nuggets just ascended to OKC level. Thunder clearly below the Lakers now.
Seventh grader wearing a 69 jersey. What a tool.

This is the absolute truth. Brooks is a great story, he's a good guy, he means well, but he doesn't have "it". And he cost them Game 3 of the Finals by the ridiculous decision to bench Russell. Even in the first quarter, when Russ missed his first 3 shots, you could see Russ shrink back into a shell a little when he had some terrific scoring chances. With the Heat pressing Durant hard and fronting him at the high post, Russ could have made a huge impact with his aggressive play. Instead he looked like a dog who had been kicked (rare for Russ, who has a healthy self-belief). Shame. The Thunder haven't played well yet in the Finals and yet they've had a chance to win all 3 games. They are clearly the better team when they are clicking, and should still beat the Heat in 6 or 7 games. But if they don't, it will be because Brooks stuck with his big lineup, and didn't trust Russell enough to go win them a title.
