Great piece Mark. So what you are saying is that it comes down to creating an audience of value around the content you produce? Makes sense to me and reinforces my view that the web is following the same evolutionary process as TV, print and radio. An obsession with the technology first that ends with retention via content.

@GiseleNMendez @zazzle_chris Thanks for the comment Gisele. And you are absolutely right. Link profile understanding is critical to avoid networks. A lot of this concern is placated via the social sharing route as active social accounts usually indicate that the site is real. That said we always run a reverse IP lookup to check what else is on the server alongside link check.

I think what hurts for @HathawayP is the fact that these links are many years old and the result of poor practice by long gone employees in an era where many perceived it 'acceptable' to build bad links!

@tedives I think that's an extremely valid comment Ted, so thanks for sharing. It is clear the future is writing and sharing world class comment and thought leadership. The key I think is to engage the key influencers in your space; and content is one of the best ways of doing that. Thankfully the days of content for the sole purpose of gaming the algo is over.

@Durant Imboden Hi. I think the point @dr_pete was making is that the two will be intrinsically linked - Authorrank powered and measured by social signals. I think we all agree that an entity based algo is coming to a screen near us all in the future. It's much harder to 'game' and will help deliver a better personalised experience.

@SteveGerencser I like the 'book smart' conclusion. It makes a lot of sense. I think to be fair to their team they have a MASSIVE job in trying to police the index and machine learning and algo changes are the only way to scale BUT they could perhaps improve their reinclusion system and customer support so businesses have greater access to the info they need to save their livelihoods...

@optimizethis beautifully captured there. Totally agree and I'm really excited about what it means for the future.
This is a REALLY important subject as far as I'm concerned right now. There is the argument that 'Google has been doing this for years' but I don't buy it. This is different, structural and ends the interweb's time as the 'Wild West frontier'. And that's a good thing. It means that investment in content and real social audience creation should now core to any digital marketing campaign. And I for one, having come from that world, like it a lot.
What I don't like so much is the collateral damage - the tales we have heard from biz owners over the past few weeks are horrible to listen too. These are real people losing real homes because they rode the algo and had no plan B. Now is the time to have that diverse plan...Thoughts?
@Koozai_Sam great Sam. Our experience would reinforce this and I think a lot of online businesses are scared of the prospect, believing it to be a complete minefield.

@Dean Cruddace agree and I think it will be interesting to see how the forthcoming gTLDs do. It's clear they have no extra value as far as Google is concerned, as Matt Cutts pointed out so why brands are going to fork out vast sums to secure them is mind boggling. It's not like anyone else could use them as those same brands can claim them via the 'passing off' route....

@simonwoods we haven't tried those but perhaps they can be added to round 2. CTR should also be measured I think and that's a great point. Would need to be done separately to the other piece though to avoid muddied data.
We would really like to hear any real life examples of .co success or failure as we plan to take this experiment on and include the new gTLDs when they are launched.
