I read the linked article.  There might be a slight poke at Ben but it really seemed like he was more about how Manning goes the extra mile.  I will be more than happy for any success Sanders has this year.

I remember watching games early in 2013 and the starting lineup graphic would show Cutch above .300 and everyone else woefully short. Now when they show the lineup the top five are .285 or above. It is a thing of beauty.

The less vs fewer in Word Crimes is reminiscent of Infinite Jest.If you were able to get past page 250 without bailing it really picks up and there is a funny side note about one of the character’s jihad to get super markets to use 10 items or fewer instead of less.

As the parent of older kids and I can tell you that the next couple of years will suck. Both kids pretty much need constant attention and you never seem to get a good night’s sleep. That said, when the younger one hits three life gets much better. They both need less attention, one or more is potty trained, they can sometimes entertain each other and, best of all, you can do something with them beside feed and change them. Also, unless you are cranking them out like an assembly line, having a third is infinitely easier.I thought people were BSing me when they told me this but it turned out to be true.I am not sure if that counted as advice or if I am just another useless older parent who won’t be on your Christmas card list but no sweat, you’ll be too freaking tired to so get them out.

Am I sorry for The Decision?

Well are you?

There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who did that terrible special. I want to talk to him. I want to try to talk some sense to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone, and this douche in hipster glasses is all that's left. I got to live with that.

This team had back to back years where they flamed out in the back half of the season.  Both last year and this year the did not panic or go here we go again when they hit adversity.  They get some sort of props for tenacity and not panicking.

At some point in the preseason you had their wins in the mid to upper 80s and just missing the playoffs which seemed very realistic. Its not a great outlook but it still beats 20 of the last 21 seasons.A week before the break they were ahead of the predicted pace and now they are a little behind. So splitting the difference has them about where you predicted. In other words, they are who we thought they were.

Even though they lost those first two games I was heartened by the fact that, after feasting on lousy teams, the Pirates played the Cardinals close.  Had they gotten gotten boat raced I would have been very worried about just how good the team was.  The Reds series this weekend should be a good one.

@TomBrenholts1 I have never been a fan of Pedro's anemic BA and prolific SO totals.  Every time I feel like posting something about it he goes on a tear and I keep quiet.  Josh Harrison playing lights out and Pedro in the lower half of the line up I wonder if the Pirates should trade Pedro while the value is high.

I believe In 2010 as the Pirates were looking new and improved they faced a similar stretch as the one they just had.  At the time then they had a decent record and were maybe a few games out of first.  With a the upcoming stretch against cellar dwellers its seemed like they were poised for serious move.  Instead they did poorly and quickly faded from serious discussion.  In 2012 when they were in The Collapse 1.0 they had a similar stretch of easy games that could have righted the ship.  Instead they continued the downward spiral.

I temper my expectations for what the Pirates can do this year knowing that this is a bellwether week, but I have full appreciation for the 12-4 run they just completed.

Spot on review.  The wisest decision they made was not wasting time on exposition.  It wouldn't have worked for this movie.  The first and last third acts were more straight up sci-fi and were fairly entertaining. The second act is the best part of the movie and is the part most discussed in this review as well as others.

I was really excited that the game would be 6:30 EDT and that I'd be home to watch it.  Then I saw the starting line up and got a little disappointed, saw Liriano throw pitches all over the place and got more disappointed, saw them misplay the pop up to shallow right allowing a run to score and commit a throwing error to allow another run to score and got really disappointed.  By the time a Liriano walked in a run depression had set in.

For the long run, much better pitching is needed to both win and contend in the playoffs.  For the shortrun consider that the Pirates are tied for second for the most errors in the NL.  Starling Marte was recently third in the NL in strike outs but is now down to fifth.  No full time starter is batting over .300.  A hot bat from Polanco and little better defense could be just what is needed to give the offense a boost and give the starting rotation a little breathing room.

I DVR’d the San Diego broadcast to listen to Dick Enberg and skipped around the game this AM.  According to Dick, the reason the game took so long was that every at bat went to 2-2 or 3-2.  I know this because he beat the snot out of that point in the seventh and eighth innings.  He also got completely flummoxed on the count at one point and was still trying to sort it out when the at bat ended with a double.  I guess it was punishment for not going with the ROOT broadcast.  Lesson learned.

Harrison was also stellar on the base paths.  He had a great read on the long fly to center and tagged up to move to second and then score on McCuthen's single.

If Polanco gets called up and has immediate success at the plate it will be interesting to see if that creates some breathing room for the pitching staff and results in better outings across the board.

Good call - 2014 vs 2013 stats

LOB 20th vs 13th

RISP 19th vs 19th

RISP w/2 outs 23rd vs 23rd

My guess is the numbers were worse for during the April swoon but either way I thought it was a secondary reason.

One item for me is I have felt that the offense has had some issues with clutch hitting this year, especially during the losing streak.  I seem to remember them getting more two out hits last year.  This year they seem to be leaving a lot more men on base and in scoring position.

There is also the possibility that this is exactly the team we have this year.Teams that float around .500 usually show glimpses of glory by going on winning streaks and beating division winners. Then, about the time you say, “hey the D-backs and Padres are coming to town and we could move within ½ game of first place” they drop two out of three in their next few series and fall back in the pack.

That said, the Pirates have to play .578 ball the rest of the season to get to 88 wins which I think is what you had for them during the offseason.Given both the talent and experience on the team it is doable.I guess the puts me in the cautiously optimistic camp.

I feel like just a little more clutch hitting or a little better bull pen performance would take pressure off everyone and the team could start winning some of these games.

Good on Cole. Its about time somebody stood up to this low class group.Gomez was acting like a jackass Friday night and Steve Blass kept wondering why the Pirates were putting up with it.Next time Gomez comes to bat against the Pirates he should get one in the back.Otherwise, they will do something first, the umps will issue a warning and the Pirates will be stuck having to put up with it.
