100% believe the Pirates maxed out this year. The problem is their ceiling was lower this year when they made no improvements during the off season and some talent got away. The last half of your last sentence says it all, "they’re going to have to approach this winter differently than last winter."

@wkkortas @BobRoss1 We could have trotted Doug Drabek out there and lost by run in the ninth and the result would have been the same. WC are 50-50 and were are batting .500 over the last two years. WHYGAVS put out a very sane prediction of about 85 wins and just missing the playoffs at the beginning of the season and Pirates had a great Sept, made the playoffs and nearly won the division. The loss sucks abut the overall season was a plus. Now let's see if they do more this offseason than they did last offseason.

One of my biggest wishes coming into the season was another
winning record so we wouldn’t be subject to a slew jackassery about starting a
new streak.As the Pirates have
approached wins in the upper 70s I have watched with quiet satisfaction as the
Pirates have not only approached that magic number but have also kicked it into
a higher gear.Should be an exciting few

No surprise. While there is some homerism, the local announcers are much more knowledgeable about the team. Fox had the Pirates on for the first time in forever (and understandably so) and it only took until the second inning before the announcer defaulted to hackneyed stuff like pointing out the Clemente wall is 21 feet high and Clemente's number was 21.

Even if they lose tonight they are not toast because of the remaining schedule. Best guess is they are a near miss for the playoffs, but with the way the team battles every day they could get in. It is one of the things I like about these guys. If it is a near miss then we essentially get teased until the very end.

deep into counts and run up the starter’s pitch count get to the bullpen ASAP.

The poor fielding is what bothers me the most. Everything else can be attributable to not having
the right players which is awfully hard to fix mid-season unless you are big
market team. Last year the Pirates had
the 9th most errors whereas this year they have the second most. Plus, last year it seemed like the other
teams made the Lastings/Nyjer type of game losing errors. This is something they control that could be
the difference between just making or just missing the playoffs.

I admire about Clint Hurdle is how he is not afraid to make a decision that is not
always the safe decision.There are
times when he puts a less than stellar lineup out to try and steal a win or two
so the stars don’t wear down.Moving
Pedro to first is another example. If it
doesn’t work out we will pillory him but he knows that in order to get in the
playoffs he needs to do something different to give Pedro a chance to regain

Luck favors the prepared and they don't win from those lucky bounces if they are not within striking distance in the first place. That's my story and I am sticking to it.

hottest team in baseball with their hotshot pitcher doing rehab starts and
their MVP on the DL and played each game to within a run.

There have been times this season were things did not go well and I felt disappointed. Even during the rough patch early in the season I was never mad, just disappointed. All through the eight and ninth inning I was truly disgusted with Watson and Wilson.

switch from local media to national media can be very frustrating.Although local media may not have the panache
of the national talking heads, they have a much deeper knowledge of their
team.The under/over on a national
broadcast of a Pirates home game stating that the Clemente (#21) wall is 21
feet high is about two innings.
2 months, 1 week ago on Conversation @ http://awfulannouncing.com/2014/if-local-baseball-tv-ratings-are-so-strong-why-are-world-series-all-star-game-numbers-so-low.html
The rise of the regional sports network has pretty much
defined how MLB is consumed; including 7:00 PM start times. The national outlets have other programming they
feel is more worthy and the few games carried are the same handful of teams. That doesn’t really build a casual fan base
that will want to watch the playoffs when the sports schedule is crowded and
the start times are 9:15 PM.
It would have been interesting to have gotten Roger Eberts take. He usually had a great appreciation for films like these.

This scenario eluded several major sports outlets including the yahoos at

As the parent of older kids and I can tell you that the
next couple of years will suck. Both
kids pretty much need constant attention and you never seem to get a good night’s
sleep. That said, when the younger one
hits three life gets much better. They
both need less attention, one or more is potty trained, they can sometimes
entertain each other and, best of all, you can do something with them beside
feed and change them. Also, unless you
are cranking them out like an assembly line, having a third is infinitely
easier.I thought people were BSing me
when they told me this but it turned out to be true.I am not sure if that counted as advice or if
I am just another useless older parent who won’t be on your Christmas card list
but no sweat, you’ll be too freaking tired to so get them out.
Are you rehabilitated?
Am I sorry for The Decision?
Well are you?
There's not a day goes by I don't feel regret. Not because
you think I should. I look back on the way I was then: a young, stupid kid who did
that terrible special. I want to talk to him. I want to try to talk some sense
to him, tell him the way things are. But I can't. That kid's long gone, and
this douche in hipster glasses is all that's left. I got to live with that.

This team had back to back years where they flamed out in the back half of the season. Both last year and this year the did not panic or go here we go again when they hit adversity. They get some sort of props for tenacity and not panicking.

At some point in the preseason you had their wins in the mid
to upper 80s and just missing the playoffs which seemed very realistic. Its not a great outlook but it still beats 20
of the last 21 seasons.A week before
the break they were ahead of the predicted pace and now they are a little behind. So splitting the difference has them about
where you predicted.In other words,
they are who we thought they were.

Even though they lost those first two games I was heartened by the fact that, after feasting on lousy teams, the Pirates played the Cardinals close. Had they gotten gotten boat raced I would have been very worried about just how good the team was. The Reds series this weekend should be a good one.

@TuscaloosaBuc I live in the DC area. You'd fit in perfectly as a fan of the Washington Professional Football Franchise.
@TomBrenholts1 I have never been a fan of Pedro's anemic BA and prolific SO totals. Every time I feel like posting something about it he goes on a tear and I keep quiet. Josh Harrison playing lights out and Pedro in the lower half of the line up I wonder if the Pirates should trade Pedro while the value is high.

I believe In 2010 as the Pirates were looking new and improved they faced a similar stretch as the one they just had. At the time then they had a decent record and were maybe a few games out of first. With a the upcoming stretch against cellar dwellers its seemed like they were poised for serious move. Instead they did poorly and quickly faded from serious discussion. In 2012 when they were in The Collapse 1.0 they had a similar stretch of easy games that could have righted the ship. Instead they continued the downward spiral.
I temper my expectations for what the Pirates can do this year knowing that this is a bellwether week, but I have full appreciation for the 12-4 run they just completed.
