I would expect to feel more of the pain early as Cervelli continues to get used to doing things The Pirates Way. (Yep, that right, I wrote "The Pirates Way")

The biggest surprise was the fact that there was only one Pirate on the list.

As a slightly more than casual fan of college hoops I was recently lamenting what's been lost when I tuned into the first UNC/Duke game. I really didn't know any of the players so there was no connection. Didn't even bother to watch their second meeting. Also, the conference tournaments for the majors hold not interest as they have about zero impact on who gets in and the seeding.

The Jayson Werth signing was regarded as the Nationals signal to agents that they're serious about acquiring the talent needed to compete for a World Series. Still, it was very unexpected.

One online obit was very thorough except for the fact that they left out "In Search of..." Of all the things to miss that was a big one.

Stumbled across the network and was intrigued by the premise. A typical show would go to some destination golf course and spend a lot of time just interviewing somebody. Then they'd do quick cuts of the actual course or amenities where you never really got a feel for what the place was like. All in all very dull. It would probably be a better idea for a show on the Golf Channel rather than an entire network. Hopefully someone other than that dullard, Matt Ginella, would host it.

I don't have to imagine it, I lived it. We live in the DC area and my dad and I were watching that night and all but threw the TV out the window. To this day I am not sure who the scapegoat is. It was a tease for the news that went something along the lines of: "The US pulls off a stunning upset in men's hockey. Details after the Olympics." We were dumbfounded that they didn't realize that is what they were broadcasting at that very moment.

As a Pirates fan, its hard to find good Pirates gear. I don't look good in yellow and black is too freaking hot. One of the few go to items is the home alternate ball cap.

TL;DR so sue me if you covered it, but is nobody concerned about the ever increasing coverage and hype contributing to the seedy underbelly of college athletics?

I immediately thought of the Steelers loss to San Diego when I saw the this but I wasn't sure if it was universal enough to make the list.

In the spirit of the season, Festivus, “I got a lot of
problems with you people!”Not
really. Many of the films were good
films but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will appeal to all. That said, we will commence the airing of grievances:
past the dismissing of old movies. That is
just too broad of an exclusion.
Godfather is the only MUST see movie on this list. The opening scene with the wedding may drag
for you but it really is a classic.Plus
it will put into context many of the movie quotes that guys of a certain age
(40+? 50+) often use.
Dave:I often wonder
if Ferris Bueller translates for people who did not grow up in that era.Since you were a child of the 80s I guess we
still don’t know.If you lean even the
slightest right Avatar will annoy the living crap out of you.
Many of the movies such as Princess Bride and Monty Python
are movies that grow on you so you might not understand the hype right after
seeing them and then one day you’ll find yourself quoting them.

100% believe the Pirates maxed out this year. The problem is their ceiling was lower this year when they made no improvements during the off season and some talent got away. The last half of your last sentence says it all, "they’re going to have to approach this winter differently than last winter."
5 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://whygavs.com/october-2014/the-aftermath-2.html
@wkkortas @BobRoss1 We could have trotted Doug Drabek out there and lost by run in the ninth and the result would have been the same. WC are 50-50 and were are batting .500 over the last two years. WHYGAVS put out a very sane prediction of about 85 wins and just missing the playoffs at the beginning of the season and Pirates had a great Sept, made the playoffs and nearly won the division. The loss sucks abut the overall season was a plus. Now let's see if they do more this offseason than they did last offseason.

One of my biggest wishes coming into the season was another
winning record so we wouldn’t be subject to a slew jackassery about starting a
new streak.As the Pirates have
approached wins in the upper 70s I have watched with quiet satisfaction as the
Pirates have not only approached that magic number but have also kicked it into
a higher gear.Should be an exciting few

No surprise. While there is some homerism, the local announcers are much more knowledgeable about the team. Fox had the Pirates on for the first time in forever (and understandably so) and it only took until the second inning before the announcer defaulted to hackneyed stuff like pointing out the Clemente wall is 21 feet high and Clemente's number was 21.

Even if they lose tonight they are not toast because of the remaining schedule. Best guess is they are a near miss for the playoffs, but with the way the team battles every day they could get in. It is one of the things I like about these guys. If it is a near miss then we essentially get teased until the very end.

If they aren’t doing this already, I suspect teams will work
deep into counts and run up the starter’s pitch count get to the bullpen ASAP.
7 months ago on Conversation @ http://whygavs.com/august-2014/game-132-pirates-5-cardinals-2.html
The poor fielding is what bothers me the most. Everything else can be attributable to not having
the right players which is awfully hard to fix mid-season unless you are big
market team. Last year the Pirates had
the 9th most errors whereas this year they have the second most. Plus, last year it seemed like the other
teams made the Lastings/Nyjer type of game losing errors. This is something they control that could be
the difference between just making or just missing the playoffs.

I admire about Clint Hurdle is how he is not afraid to make a decision that is not
always the safe decision.There are
times when he puts a less than stellar lineup out to try and steal a win or two
so the stars don’t wear down.Moving
Pedro to first is another example. If it
doesn’t work out we will pillory him but he knows that in order to get in the
playoffs he needs to do something different to give Pedro a chance to regain

There have been times this season were things did not go well and I felt disappointed. Even during the rough patch early in the season I was never mad, just disappointed. All through the eight and ninth inning I was truly disgusted with Watson and Wilson.

switch from local media to national media can be very frustrating.Although local media may not have the panache
of the national talking heads, they have a much deeper knowledge of their
team.The under/over on a national
broadcast of a Pirates home game stating that the Clemente (#21) wall is 21
feet high is about two innings.
7 months, 2 weeks ago on Conversation @ http://awfulannouncing.com/2014/if-local-baseball-tv-ratings-are-so-strong-why-are-world-series-all-star-game-numbers-so-low.html
The rise of the regional sports network has pretty much
defined how MLB is consumed; including 7:00 PM start times. The national outlets have other programming they
feel is more worthy and the few games carried are the same handful of teams. That doesn’t really build a casual fan base
that will want to watch the playoffs when the sports schedule is crowded and
the start times are 9:15 PM.
It would have been interesting to have gotten Roger Eberts take. He usually had a great appreciation for films like these.
