@Blon Fel-Fotch Passameer-Day Slitheen @not764 @gunslinger19 @AB1992 I think it's important for everyone to remember that there are societal, metatextual reasons that the idea of Gallifreyans changing gender was never brought up in the classic series. The Stonewall Riots happened in 1969, the first male-to-female gender reassignment surgery in the US took place in 1966 - the very idea of being transgender or of bending/breaking gender roles was something new and frightening to many people in those days, and people who pushed gender boundaries were even less accepted by mainstream society than they are now.
Doctor Who's always been a bit transgressive, but there were certain lines that a BBC 'family show' just couldn't cross at the time. To draw a (very flawed) analogy - Falcon was the first mainstream black superhero, and he was first introduced in 1969. Before 1969, there were probably outcries about how black people couldn't be superheroes because it just didn't fit with canon (or whatever). And now... well, we still don't have heaps of non-white heroes, but it's a hell of a lot better than it was pre-Falcon.
Just because it was never mentioned in canon before, doesn't mean it can't be a legitimate Time Lord practice! It just means that we as a society have finally (hopefully?) progressed enough to accept seeing it on our screens. :P(I hope this didn't come off as me attacking you - I do see where you're coming from!)

@supermoff is waiting for heaven.... @SonicTheHedgehogRules @Notsosmartguy Approves of female Master Oh, god, Facebook is hell. Never, ever, EVER look at the comments on a Doctor Who Facebook post, if you want to retain your faith in humanity.
@M-M-G What makes gender so sacred? How come that's sacred but changing the titular character's personality, age, hair etc. is all perfectly fine?
@AztecsDaleksAndCavemen @MeglosProductions Yeah, true - it's so linked to the previous season, and Time of the Doctor in particular, that I can see how it might not be incredibly appealing to non-Whovians or people who don't necessarily watch the show regularly.

@Antee991166 I purposely surround myself with people who are positive about the new series, so I'm a biased sample, but so far I've only seen one or two people complaining about it, and they're mostly hardcore Moffat haters so I basically ignored their opinion.
@DeeaRose How is that even relevant?
@In The Forest Of The Night Oh no... the finale is during my exams! This does not bode well for my studies...

...despite already owning s7 AND the 50th, I am deeply, deeply tempted by this. (It IS really weird that it's such a limited edition though. Maybe only the 'fancy version' of the box set is limited, and there'll be a more standard DVD/Blu-ray release of the same content later?)

Not gonna lie, I'm incredibly psyched for all of these (except maybe the Cyberman element of the finale, I'm not too keen on the Cybermen)!

Oooh, great picks! Personally, I'd add the first few minutes of Rings Of Akhaten, where Eleven and Clara are just wandering around the bazaar, checking out the locals, eating the blue food... (It's a large part of the reason I love that episode so much, to be honest!)

@Timhogan @Yotam Maybe it's because the regen energy is coming from an outside source instead of being the Doctor's own? Like how if you transplant and organ, sometimes it's rejected - maybe more of River's energy was required to leap that hurdle, so to speak, and make sure the Doctor's body accepted it?
I don't know, I'm not certain that makes any sense outside my own head, but that's kinda how I think of it!

^This. Plus, remember that time the Doctor got distracted thinking about how attractive Clara was? All those cheek kisses?
Don't get me wrong, I agree that there's no "canon relationship" along the lines of, say, Eleven/River or Ten/Rose (or even Captain Jack/anyone!), and you're free to believe they work better as best friends than anything else, but the text itself has explicitly suggested several times that there is at least a mutual attraction somewhere under there. Even though, like notsosmartguy said, they're both smart enough to know it won't work - hence why Clara strenuously "doesn't fall in love - sometimes twice a day".
Anyway - no matter the semantics of what exactly they were to each other, I definitely agree that Clara and Eleven were a perfect duo! Their interactions were a joy to watch, and I'm super excited to see how Twelve and Clara's personalities bounce off each other :D

Great article! And it /is/ nice to see Clara getting some of the appreciation she deserves. :)
One small thing though... "Which did wonders for the Whouflle shippers **shudders**"
...Really? :P Come on, I don't ship it either, but you can't deny that the seeds of Whouffle have been canonically sown. It definitely wasn't just the title of that minisode that got them going!
Although I realize DOTD will almost definitely end up taking home the prize, for me personally it's gotta be A Christmas Carol. Not only is it the best Christmas special DW has ever done, it's also (IMO) one of the best Christmas specials any show has ever done. Plus, it contains so much of what Moff and Eleven do best - timey wimey plots, pop culture allusions, a sense of whimsy with an underlying darkness, and a real feeling of family and of loss. It makes you laugh and cry and hold your breath in awe, and for me personally it's one of the best standalone episodes DW has ever done.

In my opinion, the other candidates are either generally uninspiring (Gatiss in particular - I love him personally but his DW stories (aside from An Adventure in Time and Space!) never seem to grab me), not experienced enough (coughPhilFordcough), or just implausible (looking at you, Messrs. Gaiman and Davies).
Wouldn't be averse to a Gatiss/someone else teamup though... oh man, that could be awesome!

Okay, yes, the robots were kinda lame, but the rest of this episode is perfectly serviceable. Rewatching it recently, I really enjoyed it for what it is - a bit of fun in space with dinosaurs. No, it's not exactly the most involved episode, but what it does it does well. 8/10.

@FMOB11 Why are you saying that like it's derogatory? I mean, aside from the fact that saying that's the only reason teenage girls watch it is 100% untrue, why are they not allowed to find 10 or 11 attractive?

There are some lovely quotes in this episode, but aside from Eleven's speech(es) there was really nothing here for me. The peg dolls were not nearly as scary as they should have been, Amy and Rory were underused, and I hated the child actor. Usually DW casts decent kids (the Queen of Years comes to mind) but I just really disliked George for some reason. I suspect it unfairly soured the rest of the episode for me, honestly...
Either way, this episode gets a 3/10. By far my least favourite episode of Eleven's run.

@MaraBackman @TardisBoy Wait, that's a thing? All I see is jokes about what a terrible, unoriginal, everything-ist, lazy writer Moffat is. Huh. Maybe we should switch sites? :P

I'm... really not sold on A Wild Endeavour. Don't get me wrong, I admire what they're trying to do, and I'm interested to see what comes out of it, but if they're trying to connect this in with Doctor Who canon in any way then I'd really like to see some evidence they've talked to the BBC about this. Otherwise I feel like it's either going to get shut down hard (like so many fannish projects do), which is a pity, or end up completely disconnected from Doctor Who, which kinda defeats the purpose.

I tend to use The Eleventh Hour to introduce my friends to DW, because I am not-so-secretly trying to create an army of people whose Doctor is Eleven. :P But this is a great list of alternatives for future reference!
(Personally, though, I'd avoid using Classic Who to introduce the show to anyone younger than 20 or so.)

Day of the Moon was actually the first DW episode I ever saw! (Yes, I'm a latecomer, mock if you will.) That image of Eleven and River facing the Silents back-to-back (and Eleven's amazing use of the Apollo 11 footage to timey-wimily beat the Silence at their own game!) is what convinced me to begin watching Doctor Who at all, so I'll always have a certain amount of residual fondness for them. Yeah, there are some flaws here - but let's face it, not many. That plus the incredible music plus the amazing directing plus the outstanding performances? Adds up to a solid 9/10.
(I'm saving my 10s for Vincent And The Doctor-level stuff.)
