@MaxwellHowe @Cameron19 Where would you see him playing - 4th line, Gregory Campbell type of player?

@Jordan29 That's my fear as well. Happened so many times last year, Leafs playing tired teams missing their stars, and they'd cough up a huge hairball. Any excuse to take their foot off the gas, I guess.

@Great Dane @Mcost61 I always think of Kessel as Guy Lafleur, they just need a Shutt and Lemaire to go with him.

I think the Leafs need someone to stand up and deliver a speech like this one - I kinda picture Phaneuf doing because of the hazy grip on facts.

@MikeGartner11 @vinoa @Anthony Petrielli @LeafErikson  I think Randy had a lot to do with it. Last year when the Leafs were on their winning streak before the Olympics, they asked Randy what was the key to their success. Right away he named Bernier and the much improved goaltending.

Which was a far shittier comment then his "Okay, just okay" comment later. Which I thought was fairly accurate, if blunt.

@Burtonboy @Komas Taberle Seriously, bring up Orr to tune him up, and Stewart for being so gutless as to chase Kozun around the ice.

@MaxwellHowe Funny, I was looking some old Anaheim boards and they were complaining that Randy ran the blender way too often. Other than that, the complaints were pretty much the same - out-shot, out-worked, totally killed the morale of the team.

Way I see it, the Leafs come out breathing fire for the first 10 minutes, then Buffalo scores a fluky goal, and the Leafs start checking out and going back to their old bad habits. Randy decides to go out in a blaze of glory, and jumps the player he thinks is coasting the most - difficult decision, I know - and the on-bench fistfight becomes the highlight of a legendarily bad season.

@MaxwellHowe @Great Dane I really wished the Leafs could have gotten Nolan. He's a good motivator, and I think the media would have loved him - he's a good interview.

As for figuring out the Leafs, do you mean put pressure on them, and stack 4 guys on the blue line and watch them bounce themselves off it over and over again?

@sniperstar @Darkside Beleafer @Cali...Leaf  That's fine, but what I often see is Reilly, Gardiner and Phaneuf slowing down to check their options, and the other player getting the puck. Very frustrating.

I'm curious as to who led the discussion in the players only meeting Sat. night. Can you imagine any player being interested in what Phaneuf had to say? Or Franson? Or Kadri? I can Bernier being good, but he's probably halfway to checking out completely because of the shitshow in front of him. Leo or Robidad might be worth listening to, but I wonder if team frat boy is capable of taking in the basic message - work harder, be more responsible. Get up on your hind legs and push back a little bit.

It'd be nice to see him get some first line minutes when Bozak falls into his "I just like to watch" routine.

@MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat My feelings exactly. It was good to see Randy move him up to the 2nd line in NY when Kadri seemed to regress to his doing laps in the neutral zone style of play he had going in the last part of last season.

@Ze_theLeafsFan @Burtonboy I think he's also playing most of his minutes with the Truck Line - the 3rd line - and with the way those guys cycle all day, every day, Phaneuf's numbers are inflated.

@Burtonboy @deedrag Sure hope so. Fitness has been a concern of mine ever since Gary Roberts mentioned that the Leafs might be going about their fitness the wrong way - the team always seems tired and weak.

Watching the Wings skate hard and work harder on the boards on the weekend, I kept coming back to the idea that the Leafs do a shitty job with conditioning. Maybe it's just the players not doing what they're supposed, fitness-wise, but when it's a team-wide problem it seems like it's thr program, not the players.

And what's up with JvR? He put on 5 pounds of muscle and yet he's constantly getting punked by smaller players?

1 week, 2 days ago on Monday Mashup: Taking on the toughs

Reply

@peterbleafs @Yaknowwhat Why not use him to give Kadri some incentive? When Kadri starts going into his neutral zone all star routine, Randy can drop him to 4th line, where he might feast on the weaker opposition, and promote Holland to 2nd line, where he was fairly effective last year.

1 week, 2 days ago on Monday Mashup: Taking on the toughs

Reply

@MaxwellHowe @Xxxxxnew The one where Kadri kinda bailed on it, instead of helping Jake out? Jake's a maddening passer, always 10 feet in front or 5 feet behind, but on that one it was close enough that Kadri could have made more of an effort to corral it.

But that's a failing common to most Leafs, except Daniel "Too much man" Winnik and the whole 3rd line.

@Zep2 Would love to see Couterier. Watching him pound the boards last year in the playoffs last year struck me as exactly what the first line needs - big, solid centre who will work the boards and play defense.

With JVR's and Phil's offensive abilities, points will never be a problem with the first line, it's that defensive presence and 100% effort that needed.

@Mind Bomb @Darkside Beleafer @Cameron19 I did watch it. Phaneuf's feet were parallel - he couldn't turn at all - and pushing him to the outside was just Phaneuf waving a crosscheck at Patches as he blew by him.
