The audience share is what people in the industry actually look at. The ratings might seem small but there's only 60million in the UK and around a third of those people are bothering to watch TV on a saturday night.

If Doctor Who ever starts dipping below 20% consistently then there would be reasonable grounds for worry. So to the worriers, do calm yourselves.

Also to the people saying the Doctor needs to "get nicer".... "shut up!"..... no seriously, shush.

AWWWW YEEEAAAHHHHH.

Best series of Doctor Who I've ever seen so far. I imagine there's gonna be people out there who are preparing to whinge cos they're used to cuddly, kind Doctors who apologise for everything and never do anything remotely morally questionable but that's just not who the Doctor is (maybe the psychological effects of the genocide he thought he'd committed explain how he's been since the Revival).

Outstanding episode! The bit where the blanket fell off while everyone's backs were turned and you just saw a blurred out head thing creeped the living daylights out of me. I've genuinely never been freaked out by a Dr Who episode before but this was definitely the first.

Loved the revelation about the barn too and the confirmation that Time Lords are a rank rather than a species.

He'd actually make a ruddy good Doctor. Still want Sean Pertwee to take over from Capaldi though (yeah I know we're only two episodes into the reign of The Capaldstonater). I've been saying this every since Ten was slated to regenerate... Mr Pertwee keeps ignoring me though...

Somebody start a petition... petitions always work...

"This story might have suited Matt Smith’s Doctor better." Might well have been written by Gatiss for Eleven. After all, the Moff said scripts for S8 were coming in during the pretend search for the 12th actor.

Sounds jovial and let's face it, Twelve isn't all dark. He's just brisk. The kids might need a break from being terrified by him for a week or so anyway. Every series should have a good old fashioned one episode story.

I loved this too. Like how they put Peter and Jenna's names in the same font as the DW logo. Nice touch that I don't think has happened before. The theme is epic, the "ooooooh-eeeee-oooooh" sounds like it's screaming in insanity.

Best of all, I watched it with my nephews (aged 5 and 7). and they were completely creeped out by it. The youngest one actually let out a small whimper when Capaldi's eyes appeared.

When comparing this to S7 though, remember they were done by different people. I think the Beeb temporarily closed the Motion Graphics department or something because they outsourced all their titles (Peter Anderson Studios did S7). Sort of glad that policy failed cos now we get this!

That's because more people will watch it on iPlayer now than they would have in 2010. Don't think iPlayer even existed when Rose was shown.

When the Barb ratings are released it'll add another couple of million to it. Plus, 32.5% of the entire audience tuning in is an insane win for the Beeb. This'll be one of the most watched shows this week.

If she was staying further than Christmas they'd simply say so. Let's face it chaps, she's off. Here's hoping for a drastically different companion next: one from the past or the future... or an alien one, perhaps. That'd be new.

Good. Murder is a jolly lovely thing... I may need psychiatric help.

I genuinely don't understand how the Moff Haters will recover after this series... it looks as though it's gonna do everything they always whined about (well, the literate things anyway - half the stuff they hate him for is nonsense. Not casting Tennant as the Twelfth Doctor for instance).

Surprised by this. The BBC really do need to find the source of all these leaks.

Can't wait for it to start... amazed by how much Moffat's doing for this. Didn't know Danny Pink was gonna be introduced so early though... little bit wary of his character. He could easily be the pitfall of Series 8.

It's not just the Mirror anymore, lots of sites and newspapers are running this. Gotta be honest, I think it's probably true. A shame. Her character will never get the chance to actually develop much. Nothing against Jenna at all (lovely lady, very kind) but I certainly think Clara will be down there with Martha and Mel in the list of rubbish companions.

@Antee991166 Not saying I believe the article but that sort of thing is what they say. Smith kept stating for months before his announcement that he wasn't quitting.

In fact the roundabout way she said that is kinda suspicious... if she was staying why wouldn't she just say so?

Rose: 8/10 - Can't fault it. Brilliantly devised, well written. Only problem for me was a bit of hammy acting in parts and Mickey. Bloody Mickey...

The Christmas Invasion: 7/10 Only really enjoyed the last fifteen minutes of this. Some of the writing was poor (or poorly directed... not sure which). Tennant just owned it, though. That Lion King part is one of my favourite scenes of anything ever.

Eleventh Hour: 9/10 - one of my favourites. Great story, tremendously fun plus it was the first episode since the Revival to truly have a professional feel about it. The directing was great and so different from before - it just looked so much better. And that rooftop scene was the definition of "epic".

@wizardgang Interesting. I agree but not because they need to kill more people. They're just a bit of a joke nowadays.

Remember how Moffat described the Master as viewing himself as a genius, always got defeated then went away to come up with another plan? That's basically the Daleks now. They're not threatening because they never win - they're portrayed almost as hopeless idiots.

I think the main reason was that the character was before his time. Audiences back then simply weren't used to anti-heroes... especially an anti-hero which, a series before, had been the happy, fresh-faced Peter Davison.

Nowadays we have loads so he'd probably be well received (as long as he wore his blue outfit rather than his traditional one). I mean, c'mon... how could anyone not love Trial of a Time Lord?

I wish people would stop describing Eleven as a romantic Doctor. He was one of the most alien-ish Doctors ever. He was handsome and young so of course the ladies took to him but his Doctor was very much at the opposite end of the spectrum to Tennant's.

@TheNightmareChild sees into your soul! I think you're missing the point. It doesn't mean that when Ten regenerated he was thinking about Trenzalore and didn't want to go there (he wouldn't remember the events of TDOTD anyway). It simply adds the idea that it was a phrase Ten used a fair bit (as the opposite of Allons-y perhaps) and which he then sadly used before he lost another life again.

I think, anyway...

Best way to do it, I think.

I like it when people who obsess over the tiniest details are just silenced with one line. One of my favourite examples was when Martha told the Doctor she had a cousin at the tower. You could almost feel the legion of nitpickers' humiliation.

I like this. I like this a lot.

Fits in with the wider scheme of the character. Nine was the scarred war veteran, Ten was the damaged veteran who desperately wanted to cling on to anything good to distract himself from his past wrongs, Eleven who hid his self-loathing with playfulness and now Twelve who knows he didn't commit genocide and is looking at how to move on with his life and is realising he doesn't need to rely on others so much anymore.

The Doctor - what an absolutely fascinating chap.

"... is that there could be episodes that features only a single type of Paradigm Dalek" ... good god! To think there are people out there who doubt Gatiss. This sounds genius.

The old Daleks really are starting to get annoyingly stale now. They were great for the first five years but pretty much everything else about the show has had it's design and style upgraded and looks way better. Leaves the Daleks looking quite CBBC-ish in contrast.

Magnificent trilogy! Awesome point about Tennant's TARDIS. Watched Rose the other day for the first time in ages and was genuinely amazed by how turquoise it was. Didn't remember it being like that at all!

Love the Rani's console too... that Time Rotor looks wonderful.

I also like to think the absence of his TARDIS speaks volumes about the Master in later years as well. Lost, homeless and wondering about looking for little evil quests to get himself back on top. Quite sad really. No wonder the Doctor just kept wanting to help him.

Once again, beautiful article. Didn't have a clue the Series 27 console existed.

Love the War Doctor's room too.... I see it more of a bridge between the Classic and Revived though the part where the coral from the console meets the metal of the floor looks a bit... unpleasant. Painful, even. I agree with you on that one.

My personal fave is either Eleventh's first (which was just lovely) or Capaldi's with the orange glow and the bookcases. Tis just nice.

Best article in ages! I read something somewhere (can't remember if it was official) that suggested since the TARDIS didn't know the Doctor that well at the beginning, the desktops were generic and sterile. Once they bonded over the years the desktops became more varied and personalised for him and finally in TDOTD it could even recognise each Doctor and adapt to him.

Loved this article. Nothing like checking this site at random intervals during the day and uncovering glorious geeky gold.

I don't mind the occasional Girl In The Fireplace-esque story but The Doctor shouldn't have done love as much as he has since the Revival.

As mentioned in the article, the show is modernising itself constantly. It'd be considered weird for the hero of a show not to have some sort of weapon nowadays. Besides, the projected energy part of it actually makes sense.

Rather than seeing it toned down, I'm more intrigued to see stories where it can't be used. I want more situations where it's disabled or against enemies who can counter it. Imagine a beautiful duel between the Doctor's Sonic and the Master's Laser. Now that'd be magnificent.

Don't think it will happen. Moffat's obviously trying to transform the show to how it was in the Classic Series and probably wouldn't want to differentiate the Classic from the Revived.

"This was Moffat’s response to the criticisms about his arc heavy Series 6"... indeed it was. Now people are moaning that they do want an arc after all.

I think what Doctor Who needs to do is just go hell for leather. I've always got the impression that Moffat's been restraining himself when it comes to Doctor Who (see Sherlock or Jekyll for the twists he's capable of throwing) out of respect for the fanbase. Us fans need to stop thinking we know what's best for the show and just let them do their thing. The general indications about Series 8 hint at that sort of approach but we'll have to wait and see.

Sadly though, I can guarantee these very comment sections will be clogged up with people whining about it once it's aired and banging on and on about how Moffat's "killing the show".
