Know what?

We're assuming two things:

1) Courtney dies

2) It's the Doctor's fault

Ignore number one, why do we assume it's the Doctor's fault? Wouldn't it be more interesting if Clara messed up for once. Consequences remember!

@SonicTheHedgehogRules @Gustaff I remember this discussion. People had the exact same reaction to Angie in Bells. She came across as a bit rude, but still okay until NIS hit and then it was universal hate for her.

Angie is a very stereotyped (badly as well) character and Courtney seems like she might go the same way.

I don't mind a child companion (I like it), I just don't get why we can't have someone that's nice like Amelia, Kazran or Merry. Children who are universal loved and won't mess up the story.

You realize that if Courtney is Angie2.0, we'll waste another episode? It's be NIS 2.0 and no that is not a Cyber pun.

@tcexect @Gustaff Did you like her ten seconds? What exactly was your thoughts on her during the time we saw her onscreen. Do you:

a) think the writer picked a really bad moment in her life to upset the audience or

b) picked a bad moment because the character is a bad person.

@prjohnnyrivera Well, she'll probably go out as some kind of hero or martyr. I don't want her to die. It would mean nothing if she saved the Doctor...again. She needs to part on bad terms and not reconcile. That's worse than death.

Why take a child in the TARDIS that the audience hates? Why not take some genuinely good and curious person who deserves it?

Merry Gelell or Kazran. Those kids I'd love to see in the TARDIS.

This helps with the idea that good things happen to bad people more often than to good people. Hopefully the only reason she tags along is so that we can bury her by the end of the episode.

After all, if you are going to kill a child onscreen, at least make it someone the audience couldn't care about.

@YaelMoise @Gustaff To be honest, I'm not the type to care about such things. I don't read that much into these articles. It's good to see an opinion other than mine and David and Connor write fantastic stuff so I'm more inclined to read what they write.

On the hate/love thing, I agree having such a clash of opinion would open more of a debate, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who completely hated the episode (who also had good arguments supporting it) and who wouldn't come across as having a rant rather than deconstructing the episode.

Even though I've made my feelings about Listen clear, other than the Clara thing on Gallifrey, I agree with 90% of these opinions so I'd be rubbish.

You also have to keep in mind that 2nd Opinions and these types are usually written by contributors who write very regularly for the site. Doubtful it would be trusted to a guest contributor (no offense guest contributors reading this). Counting myself, there is only 9 people and Clint only reviews the main thing up front, so that's eight.

For this to work, you'd have to find one of the eight every week who radically didn't enjoy the episode. That's hard which is why sometimes the opinions come across as both praising instead of differing views.

13 hours, 12 minutes ago on 2nd Opinion: Listen

Reply

@YaelMoise @Gustaff I don't do the 2nd Opinions. I also don't get to decide who does it. It's usually David and John and they do a pretty good job.

13 hours, 15 minutes ago on 2nd Opinion: Listen

Reply

@YaelMoise It's not usually like this. A lot of the time it's two differing opinions. Not love/hate per se, but a notable difference in that it may go awesome/meh or terrible/not as bad as they say. Series 8 just seems to cater to both sides of who writes the 2nd Opinions.

@MaraBackman @Gustaff Yes, but the TARDIS traveled to a point in time where the Type 40 wouldn't have been a museum piece. The Doctor wouldn't steal it for another 350+ years. It would've seemed/looked brand new to the Gallifrey of that time. Remember this is past Gallifrey. From their POV, the Type-40 wouldn't be considered a museum piece.

The TARDIS would've traveled back to a point where it's technology was on the same level as Gallifrey's current tech.

Just to clarify, I'm not disputing the fact that the Time Lock can be broken, I'm just annoyed that there was no explanation given. With Caan, we had the how he did it and what happened because of it. The same with Rassilon and the Moment. In their cases, it was all explained (onscreen) how they broke through. For Rassilon, he broke the First Law of Time by interfering directly in the Master's past and the Moment is this universal ass-kicking machine for whom time bends over backwards.

For this instance, the only explanation is various possible theories by fans that although clever and creative, are headcanon at best.

@TardisBoy Yes, but the 9th/10th Doctors weren't that old or wise. The War was still fresh for them. Remember the five stages of grief? Well throw a time machine into the works!

Reply

@MaraBackman @Gustaff That makes no sense. You don't design technology to be incompatible with older technology, you design it to improve and incorporate all the past designs into a newer, better model.

Type 70 TARDIS can do everything Type 40s can and Type 40s can do everything Type 20s can. That's how technology works.

It actually allowed it to land TWICE when you think about it and then 11 more times shortly after.

@TardisBoy That would make the Doctor look very stupid. The Ninth/Tenth Doctors would most certainly have regretted their decision at some point and tried to go back, only to discover that it isn't possible.

He would've tried. He's not the type to just say it's can't be done without testing it out for himself.

@Mark McCullough @Gustaff That is very farfetched explanation. It isn't mentioned and only 1/10 fans may have come up with it. While it's not mentioned onscreen and until it is addressed, it breaks the internal logic set up by the show. I'll find out what the answer is at the end of Series 8...

...though I know there won't be an answer. It'll have happened just because it happened.
