Love it Suze! Great words that sound very well rounded as well! I also need to get back into the music saddle and pluck some strings :-)

My words this year are Sawubona, Temple, and In medias res - more about them here:  http://www.jasondyk.com/sawubona-temple-and-in-medias-res-my-three-words-for-2014/

@ginidietrich That's a whole other post about admitting when you're wrong! Absolutely! And definitely not in a copy and paste way but a way that builds relationships (i.e. personalized, understanding the actual problem, etc.)

@biggreenpen I don't think your organization is alone in that! For some leaders their minds can be put at ease if they have a plan put in place before venturing into the social media waters.

Couldn't agree more with the monitoring! The quicker you notice it the quicker you can respond and handle the situation and nip it in the butt! :-)

This is a great breakdown Lindsay! It's amazing what could happen if people actually preplanned stuff and took a second to think...."What could possibly go wrong?" I think if they stopped to think about it for a second they likely wouldn't have gone about it the way they did...or hopefully at least did a little more research :)

@ginidietrich Hey Gini, you definitely didn't miss it, I recently combined two sites into this one and imported some of the content from those sites, but for some reason the comments didn't migrate with them from this site :( (but you did actually respond to this before (http://socialmedi8r.com/no-such-thing-as-negative-publicity/)...it's kind of like a weird deja vu right?

It is incredible how building a strong and conflict resilient community can be both defensive and forgiving though!  And as creepy as it was I actually remember that day because I was at the conference that you were presenting at I believe

P.S. My father-in-law's a chicken farmer and my dad use to grow chickens....so yes...I have literally seen shit hit the fan :-)

@belllindsay even more so, the brands that have worked hard at humanizing and perfecting their brand's voice are ruining their online communities when conflict hits and they revert to "press release mode." It's quite fascinating actually

I think one thing in the future of PR is managing (and by managing I mean advising/stepping in when there's conflict) conversations that brands and consumers are having.  I see PR firms playing a big role with brands with this...but first PR companies (not all...just some) are going to have to start getting into the 21st century yet!

I think NOW is the time for Lance to start engaging with folks as well! He has an amazing opportunity to rally his community and make it 10x stronger just by chatting with people, thanking them for their support and owning his part of all of this.  It's amazing how forgiving people can be if you own your stuff

Is there a good definition of troll anywhere? Online reputation is huge, and only becoming more and more important to be aware of how to manage it.  One thing that strikes me with the pizza place is the preventative side of crisis/reputation management - It's "easier" to combat bad reviews, crisis situations, etc. if you already have an engaged community that knows, likes, and trusts you.

Reply

@ginidietrich @rdopping I would agree that you can't contain the negative, but you can certainly mitigate the consequences that come along with it, in my opinion.  I think it depends on a few things, Timing of response, tone of response, and what you meant to your community before the negative occurrence happened. They can't control the message, but the can certainly control how they respond and engage with folks

Great post Danny,

Loyalty comes from being an example to your "followers," if you show them you are loyal and will be loyal to them they are far more interested in returning that loyalty.  It's not about the money being spent or the giveaways you offer, it's about being there for them.

Sidenote: I do find it funny about all these REALLY busy social media "gurus" that are so busy with all these clients, and all they do is sit on twitter all day....when are they working on their clients work then?

Hey Jay,

I find it interesting that when you talk about why businesses aren't using it (they are afraid of negative remarks) that you assume that it is their product and/or service that is lacking, when it could be that they just have terrible conflict management skills and aren't sure how they are able to humanize their company. Thoughts?
