It's not Pokemon (it's supposed to be an unannounced title), but possibly Metroid. And this is just a theory of mine, I think his new IP is Wii U too, but what unannounced 3DS title could possibly warrant a 90min Q&A? It's gotta be something big. And making a new IP is less of a gamble on 3DS, with lower development costs.

I suppose we'll just have to wait another week to find out.

Yes, to be more precise they were refreshrate issues, as the framerate didn't match up with peoples TVs. This is kinda the same thing. It doesn't matter if the game renders at 22 or 59 frames per second (well, it does but for the sake of an example), neither matches up with a TV refreshrate which causes stuttering. This is why devs target 60 or 30.

In itself this wouldn't be a big deal (it's probably not anyway) but because there is for some reason a duplicate frame every 64 frames (so a little over every second an image is shown twice), this stuttering becomes more noticeable to those sensitive to framerates and such.

In a few years all TVs will hopefully have an equivalent to Nvidia G-sync were the TV will match its refreshrate with the input, making this a problem of the past. (unfortunately, manufacturers are more interested in 4k at the moment)

Now who's dismissive, huh? I don't think you understand what I'm trying to tell you... My problem isn't with Mario Kart, it's with you (no offence, I believe you're a nice guy but this is bad journalism) reporting on a technical analysis and spinning the story to fit your agenda. Why make an article on Digital Foundry if you're not going to explain the technicalities? You're not even mentioning what the problem with the duplicate frame and the refreshrate.

And your Killzone example only makes sense if we should judge every game on the same terms and holding all of them to the same standard. I believe that would be a mistake as games are different.

I don't care if you reply or not, I just hope that someone will read my comments and understand where I'm getting at. And if you're reading my comments in an angry voice (as some people tend to do which changes the message and makes it sound passive aggressive)... I'm not.

2 months ago on New Report Says Mario Kart 8 Shines at Native 720p 60FPS, Not Truly 30FPS During 3 or 4-Player Mode

Reply

Why are you comparing Mario Kart to Killzone? Compare it to previous Mario Karts and you'll see that they've had perfect performance since Double Dash. This is the first time in a long time that it's not a solid framerate. And, I don't mean to sound rude but you're missing the point; the problem isn't the silly one frame drop it's the judder caused by a misalignment with the TV refreshrate because of this and more importantly the duplicate frame. And this isn't something you'll see in YouTube videos as they're rubbish.

Now I couldn't really give two skits as most people (probably including me) won't notice a thing. But I do not like how you're making an article about it and not getting your facts straight. Be Nintendo-centric, but don't go all fanboy in their defence.

2 months ago on New Report Says Mario Kart 8 Shines at Native 720p 60FPS, Not Truly 30FPS During 3 or 4-Player Mode

Reply

Wait, that's not at all what they wrote! It runs almost exclusively at 59fps and every 64th frame is shows twice. This causes a constant judder every second as it doesn't line up perfectly with the refreshrate. Something we're used to Nintendo getting right. Not many will notice this, and it doesn't appear when there's no CPU controlled racers, but it is a constantly appearing bug that can be jarring once seen. Hopefully Nintendo will patch this as it's a small but notable issue in one of their biggest games.

I don't know if I'll notice it myself, but its odd that this has gone past Nintendos gold standard quality assurance.

Good thing Nintendo makes use of those 25GB discs, huh?

Nintendo continues to prove they're the masters of compression, but it does bring a few questions... For one, the Wii U only supports uncompressed audio output with LPCM, yet they must be compressing the audio to make the footprint this tiny. So why boast uncompressed output if you're not going to use it? The lack of Dolby and DTS continue to be a true shame. I want surround via optical dammit!

With over 800GB available space on my HDD, I don't see me ever filling it... Even halfway.

Hopefully this means we'll get some good DLC throughout the year as well. Nintendo could make a lot of money on that, but it depends on whether they dare do DLC for their biggest title, in fear of upsetting fans.

The Wii U will likely never make sky-high salesnumbers, so Nintendo needs to make money from the already established userbase.

All the DLC courses are remakes of the ones from N64. Reminds me of retro tracks in Mario Kart.

I think they should be spread more apart, but other than that it seems Nintendo is hitting the nail on the head with this DLC. And I hope this means we might get additional content for Mario Kart and Smash Bros, but I'd like those to be given something more like expansion packs... Bigger and released some time after launch.

I'm assuming this was a reply to Sturmdavenport, but what's interesting about Ridley is that he just showed the shadow. Why not just reveal the whole thing? Now there are of course four possibilities;

1. Ridley is still in development and the model as well as it's animations are unfinished.

2. Sakurai just wants to save the full boss reveal for later.

3. He's actually playable and Sakurai is trolling, (the man loves his mindgames) since he didn't actually say that Ridley would be a boss.

4. This is Sakurai we're talking about, and we should expect the unexpected, so it's probably none of the above.

I'm expecting a reveal at this year's E3 and a release next year. Nintendo needs to show something new at E3, and Zelda would be a good start. I'm also personally hoping for an unveiling of Monolith Softs 3DS title, Mario Party 10 and that Pokken Fighters thing. Oh, and Miyamotos' new IP, let us see it.

A PC gamer wouldn't be accustomed to dealing with "generations" in the same way as a console gamer, your computer wouldn't necessarily be unable to play new games. You could also be in favour of a more progressive evolution in games to match the evolution in hardware. Many Pc "elitists" dislike consoles and claim they're holding back game development and so on, keeping their monster-rigs from being fully utilised until the next generation, some six years later.

I also believe that humans are unable to be objective, and although your opinion may be shaped by owning a Wii U and a Pc, it does not make you any more correct (or wrong). As you said yourself, you could own every console and your opinion would be the same, so why bring it up?

(I may come off passive aggressive, but I'm not trying to attack you or anything)

3 months, 3 weeks ago on Next-Gen … Or New Gen?

Not sure if you're being ironic or not. I'd argue that if you can be considered a "PC elitist", then that would make you very biased towards the term "next gen" as regular computers have no clear-cut generational divides.

But dem particles tho.

Remote Play, Interactive gameplay streams, VR. The PS4 is arguably every bit as much a step forward as the Wii U, but where the Wii U attempts innovation by itself (the gamepad and asymmetric play), the PS4 is more of a platform for innovation.

To be honest, I'm just happy we're finally getting decent texture filtering.

I'm pretty sure I'm not agreeing, what you claim to be second party are first party by definition, as they're owned by Nintendo. Second party are not owned by the platform holder or publisher, but have their titles published by them and in some cases the publisher also own the IP they're working on.

And please refrain from name-calling, it puts you in a bad light.

You get the same salesnumbers, maybe slightly better, as it's still mostly bought by the same people who would buy it without cross-buy. But what you get is happier customers (especially those with both systems) which leads to good word of mouth. And cross-buy holds added marketing value. Then you also get an easier time selling the other systems to those with just one, as they'll already have a library of games available. It won't make much of a bump in hardware sales, as there's llittle point in buying the other system for a game you can play on the one you already have. But it may help sell more software as more games could be ported, and reach a wider audience. Win-win.
