wow you SHOULD be on staff for the Sens, great work. My observation that Smith was on the ice for two goals, one a glaring giveaway. Your graph certainly goes a long way explaining that. Maybe Maclean was sending a message but it certainly was at the peril of what eventually happened, another loss. Yet I still see this season as a rebuild and that there will be at least two more painful years of new players and veteran losses as the new replaces the old. I still trust this coach and I'm sure there is a plan to all this line juggling.

The other reason that a rebuilding team stays under the cap is to be able to sign restricted free agents such as Mika Zibanejad. Fans really need need patience when it comes to these times. Alfredsson was never going to be part of this organization going forward and it was not more evident than the 24/7 where they did a segment in his new home in Detroit. His kids speak flawless Swede and he maintains Swedish traditions, he has every intention of returning to Sweden so we need to move on.There is something to be said for this organization having produced two general managers.Melnyk under the advice of his management team is staying the course and not spending foolishly. Better to bring in a rental from a position of strength going into a playoff run than to hope you make it and waste whatever picks or prospects it costs you to make a move. This team has improved tremendously since October and continues to do so. The Eastern conference is so unstable that all it takes is for a team to get their act together to make a solid run, there is a lot of season left so let's enjoy the ride and continue to speculate to our heart content.I still don't have a lot of confidence in Melnyk I feel he is was too involved in hockey decisions. Maybe his knee jerk reaction to bring in Kovalev has had an effect, enough to trust Murray anyway.

I did not read the whole interview but the ending interests me as I have known two coworkers who are literally only interested in the fighting. One of them came to work every Monday just to watch the fights on Youtube. Do they buy tickets and go to games probably not but they certainly watch it on TV and it is a source of revenue. Would people who watch hockey for the violence stop watching? Yes

I say stand pat and hope that they can relax enough to play loose and get better as the season progresses. I did a comparison between the Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks defenceman and the age difference is incredible. Most of Chicago's D is are in the full prime except for one. Ottawa on the other hand has a very young defensive core that just needs time and a couple more years. I know it's hard to watch but will pay dividends in the long run. Borowiecki ( I have to look up how to spell that one every time) has been very steady since he came up, even his first passes are good as oposed to tape to tape to opposing players like Methot and Karlsson have been doing. Time is all this team needs, hopefully our owner and fans get this.

It does make you wonder how this organization is run? Is Melnyk as involved in personnel decision as I've always thought ever since the Kovalev fiasco? I heard him in an interview on the radio once say that Brian Murray had given him a list of possible draft picks and moves they might make for his approval. Melnyk is not a hands off type owner and just maybe Tim Murray might want out. Then again I get the feeling with absolutely no proof that things might be the same in Buffalo. That owner is a huge fan as well. I hope he stays myself, he has proven too good at bringing in and developing young players (university).

Can we trade Garrioch, Sometimes I think the media likes to speculate a little too much. This is still a work in progress and is only in year three. Cowen does need to get more involved and certainly part of that involvement is his physical play. He also needs to think less offence more defence as he is not recognizing when the play gets turned over and goes the other way, often outnumbered attacks for the other team. As for goaltending I'll admit Anderson has not been spectacular but not many goalies are facing that many shots night after night, also add that the Senators have faced the cream of the crop in opposition since the beginning of the season with suspect officiating to boot and it's impressive they have gotten any points at all

I don't know about Grant (fourth round 119th) but Condra can skate and just maybe they could do something on the fourth line. After constantly wanting him to come back to the Senators if his role is going to be fourth line garbage and some specialty play I almost wish he would stay in Bingo and get some quality play. Hopefully they are so good that MacLean makes them a top line, what a mess

I had heard that he loses his cool after losses. I can't remember which series but there was a lot of screaming going on according to the media who were trying to access the players after the game. They never mentioned who was doing the yelling but...

You can point to so many obvious reasons for this team having fallen out of favor with fans and therefor losing money. The ten games that featured discounts at the beginning of last season and then extended to the rest of the season, Signing Jared Cowen to more money than they expected, O'Brien getting NHL money to play in Binghampton those things add up. The worst of these are sending Zibanejad to the minors, are you kidding me, he is a better players to watch than De Costa will ever be, makes this team a joke.

As much as I like Foligno there are, like you say, plenty of players that are here and coming up the pipe with similar styles. Somehow more was expected of him but it never materialized. Keep him if his contract demands are reasonable, trade for a pic at the draft or this summer if not.

@Nichols6thSens And Cowen certainly brought it this year after helping Bingo get the Calder. The relegation tournament is Mikas chance to show what he's got against inferior talent

@SteveHL Your points are all good and I hope he responds to the pressure that will be put on him to perform as he is expected to.
Mika Zibanejad was not impressive in the world juniors either, other than scoring the winning goal that is. Hopefully he finds his way and some consistency because it might be a while before he makes the Sens roster as a regular.
I did not get one:(

Compared to Toronto we should be placed that high. There are many decent players coming up for Ottawa in the coming years. Should be interesting to see who actually works out.

We must never lose sight that this is a rebuild using a lot of rookies who have played a lot of games in the last two years. I'm hoping that the rotation of players from Binghamton continues including goaltenders. IF this team makes the playoffs it's a bonus but I watch every game to be entertained and other than a couple of stinkers it's been a good season so far.
2 years, 7 months ago on The Ottawa Senators Goaltending Carousel Continues To Spin | March
Good points and Lehner is not disappointing in the least. I'll bet he has been calling on the hockey gods to give him a chance to play on a team that actually competes. Funny how Bingo has been winning in his absence.
2 years, 7 months ago on Craig Anderson Doesn't Tip His Hand | March
They've done this before in bringing a prospect to the big team to get the exposure and to work out without playing a game. It would certainly serve the purpose of keeping him focused on the goal of making the team next year and with all the Swedish players already here it would not be difficult for him to feel at home. Somehow I see him coming over and if they struggle in the playoff then maybe insert him. Glad to read I'm not the only one that thinks Bobby Butler is a bust. He spends more time on his ass trying to compete than actually contributing.
2 years, 7 months ago on The Possible Return Of The Mika | March
concerning defenseman he said they were going to see what they were like at development camp next year in another interview. Seems to me they may sign Kuba another season and Gonchar is good for next year as well so there is no rush to bring anybody up. Lee is playing a good 5-6 role as will Carkner with a full season instead of the short one he has had this year. Again this team is in it for the long term and whatever they accomplish this year is a bonus
2 years, 7 months ago on Your Senators NHL Trade Deadline Blog | February
This really sucks at a time when the team is doing so well that a "playoff run" TM, is possible. I do believe that Lehner will keep us in it and Auld may surprise us as well or we can continue to watch the Leafs self destruct. Either way the Senators are in a good position to weather the storm.

You should send this to those who will do the voting. Excellent work and something I would never attempt, it must have taken hours to put together.

@Dennis_Prouse@PalladiumDirt When Melnyk was spending to the cap it's true that he needed a couple of playoff rounds to break even but not this year. Your right though it would be nice to see what they can accomplish with the team they have now. The kids did win a trophy last year under trying circumstances and it would be fun to make a run and see what happens but if a great offer comes in for Kuba Gonchar how can you pass that up
2 years, 7 months ago on The Eugene Melnyk Radio Tour Carries On | February
@Dennis_Prouse@PalladiumDirt if this were Minnesota or Phoenix I would agree but the Sens have been drawing well this year and are doing equally well for season ticket sales next year, add that they are also nowhere near the cap and I doubt Melnyk is losing money this year. It is looking more and more like this team is going to make the playoffs especially considering the shear incompetence of every team bellow them. I think fans here get it and are embracing it.
Karlsson's defensive game has improved tremendously. He actually out muscles some forwards off the puck and throws the odd hit here and there. I can't remember the players name but he knocked down this 6'7" forward twice in one game and that was impressive. He also has a really good ability at getting the puck off forwards sticks and making a fast pass that sometimes still goes the wrong way but less often this year than in the past.
2 years, 7 months ago on Bryan Murray Talks Nash and Trading Kuba on Fan 590 | February
Losing Kuba and Gonchar will affect the back end tremendously but would give this team some valuable draft picks seeing as how teams are paying a good price for middle of the road talent, not that these two would get you a first round pick but Ottawa does seem to find some good players in later rounds. As for dumping more minutes on Cowen, not necessarily as there are others who can pick up more minutes like Lee although nowhere near as effective. I just like the idea that he is not going to sell the farm to make a run this year as he has in the past ie Kovalev which I strongly believe was a Melnik move
@bobby_kelly@Nichols6thSens They are sitting out Konopka in order for O'Brien to play. They sat out Butler and could have inserted Petersson in his place. I'm just saying that if his game has improved and since this is a rebuild of sorts and your supposed to give your prospects a shot, it was a great chance to see what he has. I blame the teams success to a certain extent and fans who would freak if this were to start happening too much and end up costing games.
2 years, 7 months ago on The @steffeG Files: Andre Petersson Speaks Candidly About Binghamton | February
@Nichols6thSens The bad attitude label does not come from his comments about Binghamton but rather the fact that he may never be good defensively, that's what is lacking from his game. As much as Karlsson was a total defensive mess, his game has come around. I would love to hear what Sens management thinks of his game this year, has he made progress in this area. If he had he would have been up rather than O'Brien, at the time this team needed offense and Butler was struggling to give it.
Just read his prospect analysis and this could be a sign of what really ails him as a player. He may never make the big club simply because of his attitude and it sounds like it's not changing anytime soon. They are obviously playing him in Binghamton in the hopes of getting his two way game to come around. Butler is not very good defensively and to add Petersson to that mix is just going to cost the Senators way too much. He could be good trade bait and maybe get the Sens a decent player.
