I shouldn't be surprised by the reffing after 20+ years of being a Wings fan, but how the hell they can call such a lopsided game against the home team in the playoffs just continues to blow my mind. I can only imagine what kind of things Bettman is doing to Crosby back at the commissioner's mansion for the Wings overcoming all obstacles in this one.... GO WINGS!

Was at the game; great to get a win over the BJ's... their fans....yikes! Not a single one of the "season ticket holders" around my seats knew that you couldn't hit the puck twice during a shootout, nor could understand why ramming someone's head into the boards from behind was a boarding penalty..... I feel like I need a shower after watching it with those "fans." Gross

1. Lets make sure we get an NHL season next year with little Gary's latest witchcraft. 2. Chill the F out on Holland.  I have a hard time believeing that Holland just woke up one day and forgot how to be the GM of the greatest hockey franchise ever. If it was best for the team, Kenny would do it. Its not like he wants us to be mediocre. He didnt turn in his Red Wings library card. Yeah this offseason hasnt been the way I wanted it to see it go either, but damn let's give him the benefit of the doubt before we throw the guy who brought stanley home to us (over, and over, and over, and over again) under the bus. This is not Nam, this is NHL. There are rules. Holland is still the guy I want running my franchise, he doesnt want to see a losing product on the ice any more than you or I.

Nick Lidstrom started playing for the Wings when I was 6 years old. Today he leaves the game and I am 26. It wont be the same not seeng number 5 on the blueline. The only comforting thing is knowing that I will be able to tell people 20 years from now that I got to watch all 20 glorious years of Lidstrom's career. Not "one of" the greatest defensemen to ever play; in my opinion he was THE greatest defensemen to ever play.

Yes, he is better than Conklin. A squirrel with goalie pads on would be better than Conklin, haha. And youre right about the other 50 goalies in the NHL that are better than him right now. I hope we get one of them

I am all in favor of this and hope he does come back to play for the Wings. He is better than Conklin (please tell me im wrong, you know its true) and the Dominator would be just fine as a backup to Howard to play game here and there. Hasek is one of those unique athletes who can play well beyond their prime. Is he a NHL starter? Hell no. But he wouldnt have to be. Just needs to be good enough to make the saves we need to win when Howard is out. I imagine he wantes to play for us, we wouldnt have to pay him much, fans would buy tickets to see him play again, its a win-win.

Finally a post about superstitions! I think I mentioned this in an earlier post, but I watch "fight night at the Joe" and the 2002 game 3 vs Carolina before every game that the Wings face elimination. I also have been known to wear the same clothes as I did during the last game that the Wings won for extra luck. On the way out to the bar to watch the game I listen to "Welcome to Detroit." I made a special song mix for this upcoming game....Im devoting all of Friday to giving the Wings that little extra luck they need to reverse this curse.

Im glad everyone is back on the optimism train again, but honestly Im getting pretty fed up with dedicating day after day of superstitous rituals to help our team out. The Wings need to show me that they care just as much as I do. Give me a reason to believe again, guys. Go Wings, do the improbable.

Ehhhh, no so fast my friend. I agree with 90 percent of your argument, but every playoff series has an ebb and flow that has a lot to do with who gets the "luck" and the "bounces." Sadly neither of those have been in our favor, but its not for a lack of trying. Just the way it goes.

Also, we do have pure goal scorers. Datsyuk is a pure goal scorer. The man can put the puck anywhere he wants, and often does. We have players who can score. Tonight's issue, to me, was more about players over-thinking their scoring chances more than just making plays and letting the chips fall where they may. We are behind the 8 ball and our team struggles with that, for sure.

@ThroatShot  @rsutton89 Not to mention, I see Babcock get just as frustrated and pissed during games as we are. He doesnt like what he sees on the ice, and he knows we have been playing far below what is expected of our team. He has changed up lines, he has criticized officiating, he has stood up to the league's inaction, he has gotten an injury filled roster back to the playoffs for a 21st straight year. I dunno what else he can do. The owness is on the players now.

Well, I guess im just on an island then when I say that I fully support Babcock. I had no idea so many people thought he was the problem. The guy won us a cup, after coaches like Dave Lewis brought us down a dark path, and he is a proven NHL coach with an amazing track record. If there is a better coach out there right now for the Wings then please tell me who, and what makes them more qualified. I firmly believe Babcock is not the problem with our playoff decline over the past 3 years. There is only so much he can do, with the players he has, motivated or unmotivated, as they may be.

Look im as pissed as anybody, but I think it is ridiculous to say that we may need a new coach. Babcock can only do so much. The execution on the ice is just not there, compounded by the worst case of bad luck ive ever seen. Babcock is our guy. I wouldnt take any other coach in the NHL over him at the moment. Our roster definitely needs looked at, but coaching is not the issue.

Did a Wings fan piss on Lord Stanley's grave? Thats the only question I can ask myself after tonight's game. Nothing, and I mean nothing, can help me understand what I just watched...

Howard...wtf dude... I mean wtf. How you can be out of your net that far on 1 guy who is covered by 3 guys and has NO ANGLE to shoot is a mystery to me. Oh and please re-take goalie 101 which teaches you how to hug a goal post to prevent garbage from getting in. Thanks

There is no justice in this loss. The refs were ON OUR SIDE for once and we still lost. The entire game was just a little thing called "luck" which was waved in our face and stripped away from us with our dignity.

Just put me out of my misery already, please. I will have no sanity left after I keep replaying tonight's game in my head over and over until friday......

Down but not out. That’s my motto for tonight. Once again we find our backs against the wall but we are still very much alive and this series is far from over. I feel good today, nervous as usual, but good nonetheless. We are at home and the fans gotta bring it this time. I believe they will.

Big Bert has been keeping the fire alive off the ice and I love it! Just like in game 2, I feel the pendulum of luck will swing our way tonight and we will get some favorable bounces.  Don’t fear the reffing, it always sucks and that wont be any different in this one. Im putting on the Howe Jersey to give us the edge and I suggest that you all do what you gotta do in order to help the Wings get the W tonight. After all, who isn’t superstitious this time of year?

I really feel like the Mule nets one. I also foresee a defenseman getting a goal...maybe Kronwall with a beauty from the blue line? Or is it Ian White? My crystal ball is a little fuzzy right now.

Game 4. Down but not out. LGRW!!!!!

Great blog! Very well said. Sadly, I dont see any changes on the horizon. The owners just gave him a 5 year contract extension, if im not mistaken, so apparently his mismanagement of the league is not very concerning to them. Hockey is a niche sport in this country and Im fine with that. I actually prefer it that way because it makes for more passionate and educated fans. Bettman's entire career as commish has been revolving around trying to make it bigger because he thinks that means better. I detest that evil little man...

No puck luck whatsoever. Unreal...just unreal. Lastly, where the hell is the Detroit Red Wings fans that I used to know. They sit quiet in the stands, waving their complementary red dildos they were provided and do NOTHING to let the refs know that this is FUCKING Detroit and we ARE hockey. Im so sick of this "well our team isnt built this way" bullshit. Then I guess its time to find players who are built that way because the past 3 seasons have made me sick to my stomach. Apparently we lose all guts come playoff time and we feel sorry for ourselves. Ive been watching the Flyers take it to Shitsburgh and you know what the diff is? The Flyers are not afraid to kill em all and keep moving. Where the hell are the Red Wings I used to know and love. Fuck.

Game 2 Motivational Speech:

I’m over it. I’ve dwelled on the Weber hit and the Wings’ bad luck in game one since Wed. night and I put it behind me. What happened, happened, and even tho it was complete and utter BS, it’s over with and it’s time to move on. This is the playoffs, and this is what we sign up for every time we watch our boys take the ice in the spring.

Weber is a goon. We all see that now. There was a time where I, like many of you, wanted to see Weber in a Wings jersey. Not anymore. I hope that he never gets the honor and privilege of wearing the Winged Wheel on his chest. There is no place for goons on this team, and even tho he did not get suspended, I would like to believe that having to play for Nashville is punishment enough.

Tonight is a new night. A new game, filled with new chances. This is why the NHL playoffs are so great. A best of 7 series allows the team that can grind, endure, and outlast the longest to advance towards the ultimate goal. Every series has a turning point. I’m actually somewhat glad that Nashville had the luck for game 1. Because luck changes; and when it does, it will be coming over to our side.

Good news is the series just started and we already have extra motivation to whip the Preds. I like it. Babcock will have the boys prepared tonight. The reffing situation is nothing new to us, we never get decent officiating in the playoffs anyways, so I’m just not gonna dwell on that.

If you can’t tell, I’m PUMPED for this game and the anticipation is building as we get closer to 7:30. Play hard, play tough, play smart, and lets make our own luck. LGRW!!!!

This is just pitiful. Shanahan, I really hope you find a new job soon because all this ruling ended up being was a classic case of "Im trying to show that Im impartial to my old team, and therefore I am doing the bare minimum so that I wont be criticized by the league."

We all know that Shanahan (back in the day when he wore the red sweater with pride) would have pummeled anyone who purposely tried to injure one of his teammates. We have SEEN him do it! Maybe little Gary has his hands tied on this one and is pulling the strings, I dunno. All I do know is this makes me sick and it crap like this is now customary for teams to do when they play the Wings in the playoffs. Opposing teams know they will get away with cheap shots on the Wings because the league is tired of us being in the limelight. The Coyotes and the Sharks have been culprits the past 2 years, now we gotta go thru with it vs. the Preds.

Disgusting. So sick of Bettman era NHL.

Didnt get to see the game unfortunately, but the score tells me enough. It is never acceptable to lose to Columbus in my opinion, and this loss pisses me right off. Classic example of the Wings knowing they have a playoff spot secure and therefore not caring about picking up 2 more points tonight.

Obviously the BJ's are gonna play the Wings hard, especially in Columbus, because their team and their fans always have and always will try to make this game an Ohio State vs. Michigan thing. I live in Columbus and trust me I know firsthand how much a game against the Wings means to their fans. Since they dont actually ever get to play for a Stanely Cup this ends up being the next best thing in their minds.

Their season revolves around trying to get a win vs. us and its pathetic really. Kinda reminds me of the Coyotes franchise. Anyways, Im trying to get pumped up for the playoffs around the corner but this team has me worried sick with their injuries and overall disinterest in the game. Rollercoaster year....

Id like to give the BJ fans credit for showing up to watch such a pathetic team, but at least know your hockey!!! So sick of them trying to make the Wings vs BJ's into a rivalry. Not gonna happen.

Either way, before we get on the Wings' case too badly just keep in mind the talent that we were missing tonight. We had AHL players starting and our backup goalie in net and we still trounced the Jackets when we needed to. All in all, im just glad to be out of this recent losing streak!

@marti783 I think we still have as good of a shot at a cup run as we had before dealing Commie away. I mean, they werent going to play him anyways so I suppose we never would have known how valuable he could have been to us in the playoffs. I still am pretty upset about seeing Commodore get the shaft, but after watching Holland's interview from yesterday I can tell that he was frustrated too. It sounded like he wanted to make a big move, but nobody wanted to play ball with us around the league. He made a good point about our draft picks not being as valuable because of the draft spot we get for being so damn good each year. Kenny is a smart man, he wants a cup just as badly as we do. Believe in the system, is what I keep telling myself. Ive seen 4 cup wins in my lifetime and they have a lot to do with Kenny's genius.

I did not like to see Commie go. I hated to see Modano get the shaft last year, and now Commodore suffers a similarly insulting fate. We have 19 games left until the playoffs, nagging injuries are starting to become an issue, we have gone cold in our games since Howard's return, and now we are gonna put a lot of pressure on Smith and Quincey to step up and become role players. Dont get me wrong, Im not pressing the panic switch; In Holland we trust. However, I am just a little frustrated, and shocked, that we wouldnt give Commodore the opportunity to take Ericsson's playing time and the chance to meet the expectations we had set for him upon his acquisition during the offseason. Commodore has 53 games of NHL playoff experience. Smith has 0. April is just around the corner and Id rather take veterans into battle....
