@Jmessih ...and I approve of this as well!
I am going for some dinner...but I leave you with this....Virtanen is the second most common surname in Finland after Korhonen. Those two are the Smiths and Jones of Finland. Jake Virtanen....Jake Smith or Jake Jones...if this is the case, then I approve this option at #8!
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973Christ we're cynical today...mind you I am a cynic most every day...just fire Carlyle, and I will feel better!
Curious...but wasn't Ken Dryden hired as President, and heralded a new 'culture of winning' for the Leafs 10 years ago? Seems to me, this Shannahan hiring is the same, no?
@Faalcon @Cosmos1973@ingy56@BruffinsI know!
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973@Bruffins I am not old enough to remember those days, but given that those days were 40 years ago, what has been our best draft choice (to remain with the Leafs) since? Wendel f'ing Clark! Kadri and Reilly might actually be the best since? Potvin, ok, he was impactful, but I am talking about the 10 year guy, the elite talent....and they come from anywhere in the draft. The Leafs have picked 1,000's of players in 40 years, and nothing but Wendel Clark, Felix Potvin, Kadri and Reilly? Holy smokes! What else? Even take our picks we traded, Boyes, Steen, they are not elite? The Leafs had had monumentally horrific scouting!
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973@BruffinsBell might have been a Rule 5 selection come to think of it....but still!
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973@BruffinsI truly think the Leafs drafting has been the worst drafting results in the history of NA team sports, really? Raps have been around for a quarter of the time, and hit with Stoudamire, Carter, Bosh...Jays with Bell, Carpenter, Halladay...the Leafs, in my lifetime (1973), have drafted what elite player? Clark has been the best? JHC! Nothing....JVR might come close, but we did Schenn to get him. Rielly is our best chance.
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973@BruffinsMight have played out that way...but we could have also drafted Karlsson, as well. One day, we might get it right...we might strike gold! We might have with Rielly....and if you take Clark for our best 1st RD draft pick, then the Leafs drafting has been soooooooooooooooo bad, as Clark was never elite. Where's our Giroux! We need one of these hits at some point!
@Bruffins We were getting one of Doughty, Bogosian, or Schenn....and we missed on Karlsson (a few did), so, we made the right choice, just not the impact player we had hoped for. JVR has made it all worth it, although we still do not have a good young stay-at-home d'man.
@Chris Jay @Cosmos1973So do many wines, but there is a difference between a bottle of Jackson Triggs cab, and a Beringer cab...
@Rthiffault @Cosmos1973@ingy56It would be very interesting to apply today's analytics to those teams...just to see how they map out vs. what we believe is positive, although I am pretty sure the 70's Habs, and 80's Oilers would more than meet/exceed the measures (based on what I remember, and can read).
@Rthiffault @Cosmos1973@ingy56We should go back and apply these analytics to the Oilers, Islanders, and Habs of old...maybe they were complete shit, and should not be revered?

@ingy56 @Cosmos1973No ones asks how you won, just what the result was.
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973...and even though Ballard was bad, they made the playoffs...and did not miss 8 years as well (different time, I know).
@ingy56 @Cosmos1973There are good and bad...he was bad.
All this Exec/Mgmt. mumbo-jumbo....I hear it on a daily basis from my uppers...anyone who works for a large company knows this BS, as it's repeated at the dawn of a new fiscal. Whatever. Go look at NA pro sports, and see who the most successful franchises are (winning, not business) - they are owned by real people...real as in a person...a rich mother f'er, but a real live person, not a faceless corporation. Players, teams, coaching...feel accountable to an owner who is a person....not a board. Stavro era was the closest the Leafs came.
@Cloud09 @Jmessih Wile E. Carlyle!
@Jmessih "Sometimes pieces are misused or mismanaged." Well if this is not 100% directed at the coaching staff, then I don't know right from left! Randy Carlyle...and staff, please step this way...out the door!
@Bruffins @Mcost61@Jay31Guys, no sense in russian him.
Looking at UFAs this year, the pickings are slim! There are a number of 3rd line C possibilites to replace Bolland; Legwand or Goc, both are good faceoff men. Goc has been playing this role for awhile, and would be cheap. Legwand is a very good faceoff man, learned the two-way game in Nashville, and is a good fit, in the twilight of his career, and could move up/down if needed.
Was looking at Stastny, and I might be convinced about him. Better offense than Bozak (will ever be), and better than Kadri right now. Stastny is a good faceoff man, and can play two-way. Oh, and he is lefthanded - good for Phil! Bozak slides to 3rd C to replace Bolland.
As for D, the only decent one available is Niskanen, and he's right-handed - hmm, good Franson replacement?
Any real help will have to come from trades.
@Bruffins @Cosmos1973@wendelsfist@daniel maroisI don't think Burke being here would have made a difference. In fact, the Bernier trade might not have happened, and Reimer was not going to get any better than he is - a good NHL goalie with a weak glove hand and bad rebound control. Clarkson is (was) a Burke type of player, Carlyle would have used Grabo the same, and would have wanted him shipped out along with McCarthur...Carlyle was Burkes guy, so Burke would have allowed him that same moves Nonis did. Burke would have resigned Phaneuf and Kessel. The Raymond deal might have happened, was he Burke draft pick...if not, both he would have been familar with him.
All the issues with the Leafs currently were there when Burke was here...I don't think it would have made a difference. The Leafs got hot last year, otherwise their play has been the same since Wilson...some might say Burke is the architect of this teams current play anyhow?

@Bruffins @Cosmos1973@wendelsfist@daniel marois...or is it that every other USA Hockey Exec is too busy with playoff bound teams?
@wendelsfist @daniel maroisHow the hell does Burke keep getting these gigs, really? Is there no one else within USA Hockey than Brian Burke?
@daniel marois He might remember how it feels to win again though...
@Darkside Beleafer @Cosmos1973 We are all far too hard on Kadri. He's a 50 pt centre two years in a row...one of which was a half season. Christ, we were ready to throw Bozak a bloody party for getting over 40 points, and close to 50 for the first time! Kadri is ready offensively. He needs to learn the defensive side of the game, and face-offs. This comes with experience (and good coaching). He has already justified his 7th overall selection...can you imagine if this years 8th turns out as good, we would be estatic! Kadri needs to be coached...if coached well, 2 years from now when he's entering his prime, he might be twice the player? I think we would all be happy about that?
Trading Kadri would be a crapshoot at best, and we would probably lose, nor would we get as good a defencemen back (or with as good of odds). Trading for draft picks, well that should qualify the GM for instant firing!

@traNsplantEdneWfie @Cosmos1973On the Leafs side of things, would be interesting...for FLA, can't see that happening. Gudbranson might be worth Kessel position for position...plus a 1st overall? Have to think about that one.
With JVR under a cap-friendly contract, and only looking like he is going to get better....with Lupul under contract, and still good for 25 goals a year. Kadri is good, and should get better....and Clarkson we're stuck with...soooo, why not move Kessel right now...he will probably fetch more than he ever will at this moment? You want impact, forget Phaneuf...as you will only lose 50 cents on the dollar for that....but Kessel you gain, gain more than any trade in the history of the franchise if done right. Draft pick(s), and an impact player easily. You could change the face of this franchise very quickly. Would take balls, BIG balls, and I love Kessel, but that is the ticket if you want impact.
@CanuckUKinToronto @Cosmos1973@Murph2417@Armchair GMIf you even think about signing Bolland for $$ and term, I will take Staal with $$ and term for sure....at his age, it's worth the package.
@CanuckUKinToronto @Cosmos1973@Murph2417@Armchair GMI am for that, if he fit under the cap...his contract is BIG and LONG? I would offer up a 1st, and player (Gardiner?) and a prospect for him, but it would probably handcuff the team more than it already is.
@Murph2417 @Cosmos1973@CanuckUKinToronto@Armchair GMThat 2011 draft has not been as impactful as you would think outside of Landiskog and Brodin? RNH may not get any better, and Adam Larrson has not been that great? Hubredeau has been getting better....but really, who else from the 1st round?
Yes, I will agree that Couturier has become a solid NHL'er too....I like him, and would love him as a Leaf.
2 days ago on Morning Mashup: Drafting in the 8 spot
@Tim Horton @Cosmos1973@Murph2417@CanuckUKinToronto@Armchair GMSure, call it 65 pts, but Couturier is not that either? He's a 13 goal, 40 point guy right now...he might get better, but I see Kadri with more to offer as a #2 from the 7th, than Couturier as a #3 from the 8th, when I can go get a Dave Bolland as an FA.
@Murph2417 @CanuckUKinToronto@Armchair GMCan we not find 'shut-down' guys as FA's? Generally, these shut-down guys are failed offensive players...I would rather sign one (like McClement or Bolland) than pick one with a top 10 pick...as that would mean it was a failed pick, that player did not turn out?
It's not like Couturier is an 80 pt two-way guy, he's trending to be another Dave Bolland really?
@Murph2417 @Cosmos1973@CanuckUKinToronto@Armchair GM...but from the 8th spot? Gauthier is our guy for that...from the teens....8th, I want something more than 3rd liner....I hope?
@Murph2417 @CanuckUKinToronto@Armchair GMDo you know that Kadri has more points in 1.5 seasons as Couturier has in 2.5? I don't think Couturier is any more than a 3rd liner....from the 8th?
It sounds terrible, I know, but lets stick to NA kids for the Leafs 1st RD pick...too critical of a pick. Different sport, but we have been burnt by Babcock/Collangelo Euro picks. Good Euro's are picked late in the draft anyhow!
@mr_hanie @Cosmos1973@wendelsfistRight, he was a BIG GUN....that is what I said....
@FrycersGhost...or at least he knows it. Regardless of what happened, Randy has the respect of folks, and Leiweke/Shannahan would be professional...may have already told him, but won't make it public for a few days.
@wendelsfist @Cosmos1973The more I read about Trotz, the more I would rather go in a different direction...damn the media and people opinions. Recycled coaches...would be nice to have a fresh, new face. Think about when we hired Burns...all we had before was a bunch of internal fools coaching for years, then we went out and got a BIG GUN....now we need to go the other way....young, fresh, and new!
@Keeon You don't quit your old job until you have a new one!
@wendelsfist He will be gone...no way he stays...Leiweke is too smart to let this happen.
@wendelsfist Toast....plain toast.

@Wolfman Viola @Cosmos1973I feel there is a movie script in the waiting here...
If Kevin Dineen can inspire a bunch of ladies to win Gold over their arch-rival, and better opponent, then he should fit right in with the Leafs current roster of primadonnas?
Don't know much about Dineen's coaching style, and his FLA record was not good, but that FLA team was shite...and has Teen-Wolf running it apparently? He's young, he should relate to the players...and if he coaches like he played, then he seems like a good candidate, no?
McCann? If he's rated number 10, I don't know if there is a drop off?
2 days, 16 hours ago on 2014 NHL Draft Lottery – Harnessing the Power of 3.6%
Well, Ritchie would probably fit Shannahan's idea of the type of player...but I think our lack of centres is an issue....
Verheaghe's buddy Perlini or McCann....that is my hope!
