Polak also says that lots of guys try to win games all by themselves, the team lacks team effort.

Interesting comments by Polak in the Czech media today:

I am not sure what is going on… We play like it is summer hockey, like being on some kind of fun trip... We have shown we can win games, but I do not know, if it hurts or it is too difficult, we simply cannot maintain that level... We do not listen to coach.

I am fairly optimistic that the Leafs beat Preds as they alway need to receive a kick in a butt once in a while to start performing. Buffalo game was that kick. I assume the Leafs win few games before another stinker.

Bozak may be getting points but he is not No. 1 centre. Phil makes the people around him much, much better. Leafs potent PP makes those who play on power play unit look better production wise, too. The Sundin years repeat all over again. With Sundin Leafs wasted many years of his supreme skill with their unability to get him appropriate wingers. Right now we have exceptional winger in Kessel and the Leafs are unable to get him appropriate centre. Only hope is that Nylander kid comes over next year and jumps directly to the NHL. It is big thing to ask from 19 year old kid. Perhaps I am reading too much into it, but I was happy to read Willie´s comments on how Phil gave him some advice. The apparent frustration Phil demonstrates lately on futility of his playmates is a good sign that even Phil knows that his best buddy is not No1 centre material. Neither is Kadri i believe. Kadri is great No. 2 centre. Good that Willie plays centre position in Modo and is doing great. That´s the only hope.

Using the title of once popular TV show - Everybody Loves Leo - sums it best. I have not seen such a powerful and all around performance in quite a long time. He can mumble in whatever language he wants if he plays like that. He is worth every single cent he is earning.

@Bruffins Shanahan´s low profile, patience, absence of heeadline statements and very impressive job so far - mostly off ice but also some roster moves have his strong footprint (e.g. acquiring Polak)... culture change starts always from the top.

As for trading some big contracts, the key question is who can replace them.

Trading Franson seems to me most obvious as one of Grannberg/Loov/Holzer/Nilsson might be able to assume a role on big club provided rielly plays with Dion on No. 1 so the kid plays with either Robidas or Polak. I do not think Leafs need to retain any part of his salary or get back big contract. Given his contract status, there would be nothing of significance coming back.

Trading Lups is also possible as one of Leivo/A. Johnson/Brown (?) may take his place. The issue with trading Lups is that the Leafs may get either bad contract back or get very low return.

Trading Bozak may be most suitable option, provided Nylander can jump directly into NHL. No need to retain anything from Bozak salary, may get decent return. What it does with Phil is questionmark, though.

Trading Carkson will no doubt require retaining part of his salary and I am not inclined to that idea.

@wendelsfist @drummond One big contract has to be moved, no doubt about that. My guess is Lups or Clarkson and Franson

Given his style of play it is quite amazing that Leo has not taken a penalty yet. It is even more important as he is the key penalty killer.

@Komas Taberle @drummond even with good hips Gunnar would have never been that horse in his zone and clearing the bodies so efficiently. I am actually quite surprised that Polak has some nice offensive instincts in his game too.

What Polak brings to the table is something the Leafs have not had since the days of Yushkevich. I am amazed by this guy strenght and willigness to sacrifice his body and no matter if Gunnar is considered a better D, Polak gives the Leafs what Gunnar has never been able to provide.

@Burtonboy there is a difference between soft and injury prone, no-one said he is soft, but he is injury prone, like Wendel Clark, one of the toughest guys, but he has hardly played a full season his entire career.
