@J_CKfor30  Wow, what a comment... seems like you were not even born ten years ago, and don't even exist now!  Do you even know what leadership means?

@J_CKfor30 Letang no longer has a supporting cast... he is a very good player, but he can't do it alone... and other teams are targeting him... so he is becoming more and more injury prone.

Actually, I'll throw this idea into the blog, since it is just a blog.... We need leadership.... love McDonagh, but he is not what we need as a leader.... as an all star defenseman with great skill, speed and heart, yes.... as a leader no.

I remember Messier almost "willing" victories versus the Devils and Vancouver in our 1994 Stanley Cup run..... now that was a leader.... his intense glare, intense play and determination were infectious and while he did not fight much, the other team was terrified at what he could do "legally" to "hurt" them. Messier was a nasty, Gordie Howe-type player who would do anything to win... he was the toughest player I have ever watched..... what a leader....

If he had faced off against Subban instead of Kreider last night... Subban would have lost all his front teeth and Messier probably would not have even got a penalty.

We are loaded with lightweight "skill" players: St. Louis, Hagelin, Zucc, etc.....maybe some of you are right.... maybe bringing in Malone is at least a step in the right direction... otherwise we are just a highly skilled 1980s Euro team playing in today's NHL.

@CantAffordAvatar Our team is good, yes, but not quite the growl of 1994 with Messier, Graves, Tikkanen, etc....

We are missing snarl and presence... something the Islanders and Bruins have and something any team that wants to get through the East needs.

We'll have a good run to the playoffs and probably make it.... but it's not going to be a cake walk against Tampa, Boston or New York Islanders.... we are just not tough enough when it counts... I'm not talking about being big and brutal, but honestly..... we have ZERO grit except hard luck Tanner Glass, who most here think sucks.

But Sather knows this, unless he suffers from Alzheimers... hell he brought us John Scott and Derek Boogaard in the second half of the season because he knows that is when teams beat each other up..... he'll do something for sure....

Put JT Miller with Kreider and Nash and create the most disruptive dangerous go the net line in hockey today...acquire Chris Neil and get the best tough guy in the game today, who will always stick up for his teammates and NOT be a liability on the ice.... acquire Brenden Dillon so we don't have to look like a bunch of pansyies in front of our net and risk Lundqvist getting seriously injured....

That is all!!!!

@Say my Name  I completely agree with your comments... Miller to the bench?  The guy seems to be the only one driving to the net and trying to make things happen... he is a disrupter and unpredictable [in a good way] so that he drives opponents crazy...

Chris Neil.... he has got to be one of the best, if not the best tough guys who can play and who sticks up for his teammates.  He also does not take stupid penalties... a tough guy who thinks and can play...

Glass must have been the best we could have acquired at the time, and maybe Sather feared that we would end up getting no one who could play the role of a gritty player... whatever the case, we will need a couple of these players at this time of year - just look at last night Pittsburgh Washington free brawl...

Interesting how only a few trades have TOTALLY turned around the Islanders.... for the past decade they have ben the laughing stock of the NHL... always imploding and being decimated at the wrong time by injuries... frankly, they can beat the Bruins with their line up.....

We are also very good, but we lack toughness.  That is why I go on and on about Neil and Brenden Dillon.... not that those two will get us over the top, but damn, we gotta get some balls out there... hockey is a game of skills, speed hitting and INTIMIDATION... and frankly, we have zero intimidation.... just get us some so that we can compete with the big boys come May.

Okay, now this is just a thought.... I know we should not be tearing our hair out just because of one loss... our team is still very very good.... we just act like scared pussies from time to time....when we are BOLD we play with guts and courage and damn WE ARE GOOD!!!  .. but against tougher teams we look like total losers.  So, here is ONE small proposal.

Let's trade for Chris Neil.  No, he is not skilled nor can he take draws, but he plays with guts and is hard as nails.  If he comes cheap, we should grab him.  We need a player like him, like we needed Prust or the other Chris - Chris Nilan.... Neil is a guy who won't make mistakes and when it comes to sticking up for his teammates, I'd argue that Neil is one of the best in the NHL.  It is OUTRAGEOUS how we get pushed around in front of our own net and seem to shy away from bigger fowards.  Hell, we had more shots than the Islanders, but where were we to cash in on the rebounds?  Probably skating away from the net hoping that the rebounds would go off their defensemen into the net....

Thoughts....

McDonagh.... yes, I think we all of agree that he has had better games than last night... I wonder if the pressure to be a leader is too much?  He is a great talent, but is he a great leader?  Leads by example, plays terrific when he is on his game, but is he inspirational and can he give content rich advice on how the forwards need to play?  Does he know what to say and how to say it to inspire others when they need it?

Question: Is McDonagh up to being captain of the Rangers?  Does he have what it takes to lead???

Again, people were dissing my analysis that Boychuk is a stud defenseman, but fact is, since they added him and Leddy, the Isles have had a streak of confidence that has translated in more determined execution.  I'm not sure it is all Boychuk and Leddy, but they sure have contributed to the Isles self confidence... same goes true in Washington with their two new D-men who seemed to have re-ignited the Caps - for now.

Why else are the Isles so good this year?  Execution. They are playing like a team.... we also play like a team, except we seem snake bit when we play the Isles... is it because they have more talent than we do?  I think not.  Is it because they are more fearless?  Well it certainly seems that way with Martin up front and Boychuk on the blue line...who do we have up front and on our blue line who are equally courageous????

I'm not going to sound the alarm bells yet, but damn, we have to avoid these passionless games, especially against teams like the fishsticks... I mean it would be bad enough to play this sloppy against a colorless team like Winnepeg, or Buffalo, but the Islanders?  Can't we rustle up more emotion?
