Great victory... the Devils are a boring, colorless hockey team.  They seem to always bore me with their sleepy victories over the Rangers, which made our victory tonight that much sweeter.

In the past, it always seemed that mediocre Islander or Devils teams would beat us.  It was so frustrating to play them, because we knew we were better, but we rarely brought our A-game..... Well tonight we proved we were better, and did not succumb to a lackadaisical loss....

Great to see Klein drive to the net and score the game winner... and Nash, well, the guy is definitely quicker and knows where to be at the right time... his confidence is soaring and when he eventually plays with the full confidence he had with the Blue Jackets he will be unstoppable with his new lean, fast powerful body frame!!!

Avery was a great player.  Not a skilled player, not a speedy guy, but he was great in that he had IMPACT.  You might hate him, but his game was to be a pest and to throw the opposition into a tizzy and take them off their game.  He never backed down and he never let the Rangers back down.

Say what you want about the guy, but he did his job better than anyone in the league except maybe Dale Hunter, who was more vicious.

Hunwick played extremely well against San Jose... I don't think it is trade time at all...

We were outstanding against the Sharks, especially Hayes'e line.... just dominant.... great size against an equally big San Jose team... remember how they slaughtered us last year?  Well,  we pretty much kicked their ass back this year... Hunwick also stepped up... an excellent game showcasing how we can play when our timing is on and everyone is hustling...

One of the best Ranger's game I've ever seen.... Nash and St Louis.... the two most dangerous players scoring within four seconds of each other.... this is the other team's nightmare...

All four lines beginning to click... Hayes, Nash, Kreider are unstoppable....

Lundqvist looked very sharp.... Marty... well, Marty is Marty... Hunwick... impressive... Mueller... impressive too!!!

@Say my Name @JoeyKocur   .... and you know, it is not like we already have an intimidating presence on our blue line and McIlrath is one of several options... this is what we need.  We don't need to goon it up, but we do need to send a message to other teams that if you have guys like Wayne Simmonds and Chris Neil crashing the net, they will have to pay.

Nothing wrong with this as a very good way to use a tough, intimidating defenseman.

JT Miller.... he is like a servicable utility infielder in the Majors... he can play all positions "satisfactorily."  The issue is that we expect more than satisfaction with JT Miller's play.... to his defense, he has been shuffled back and forth between wing and center... and between Hartford and New York, so he must be a very confused lad.

I say put him in ONE position and let the poor guy develop.... he can't be all things to all people... we will just screw him up... all we need to hear is that he was traded and that he has become the next Zack Parise for another club...

@jslnyr1102  A lot of "maybes" and I agree with you.... we'll never know and McIlrath will never fulfill his potential beating the crap out of AHLers and never having a chance to stretch...

Give him a chance... he has not been spectacular, but we do not need him to be... he just needs to do his job on defence and not try to be like Paul Coffey.

Some good comments about McIlrath....

He is not perfect and so far, at the NHL level, he has not been spectacular, but he does not have to be.  He has to be a solid 5/6 defenseman... stay at home, clean out the crease, play the body, intimidate and not let any one take liberties with our players..... that is all.... PERIOD...

If this is the case, then bring him up now.... he will never be Brian Leetch, but that is not the plan.... bring him up because he is ready to fulfill his role as a hard hitting, intimidating presence on our blue line and boy do we need that soon!!!

What has been great to see this year are at least two things: (1) Marty St. Louis playing like his old self.... and (2) Rick Nash playing like his days in Columbus.

This is great news.  A healthy Nash and St. Louis (remember these guys with their old teams) is very scary for the opposition.  Both seem to score at will when they get in their zones.... and in bunches too.  Add Kreider and a flying Duclair and you suddenly have the spearhead of a very potent offense.... add Zucc et. al. and we are back in the Stanley Cup hunt.

@Vkinc74  Duke was not bad.... but he did not have the same impact he had in pre-season.  Because our other players have not been playing as well, does not mean we let Duke play.  Duke might in fact might be playing better than our veterans, but not up to his potential... so let him sit and watch how the game unfolds from the strategic perch of the press box, then let's see if that helps his game.

Our power play has been invisible... best we forgo our power play instead!

Seriously, it is our timing.... Not only with power play but also at even strength... we just are a little off on passing, positioning, etc.  You can see this bad timing when we break out of our zone.  We are just a bit off with our passes and positioning.

Everything in life is about TIMING and that goes double when you are playing professional ice hockey at lightening speeds where milliseconds matter.

@EHBIGAPPLE @Vkinc74  .... you are paranoid... a major corporation where performance is subjective is very different than on ice performance, that can be measured and observed by thousands... if you bench someone who is excelling so well just because you are trying to cover your ass, then you are an ass.  Hockey players are NOT exactly the same as workers in a corporation.... everything you do on the ice is measurable, visible and translates (in most cases!) to some semblance of salary.  In the corporate world, a lot is subjective and much more political, as a result.

I'm not sure where you worked but you are taking your "cover your ass" argument way out of line.

In any case, Duclair has been good, but he is a bit "light" and we do need some beef out there vs. John Scott who can knock you into LaLa land.... no one wants to see skinny Duclair destroyed by a stupid oaf.  Good that we sit him for this game.

Carolina is the perfect team for us to reverse our fortune and get back to our winning ways.... we have their number and have beat them soundly in the last several meetings... now, without Eric Staal, they will really suck.

Having said that, we need to come out with our A game and sharpen our TIMING and team defense, otherwise we will lose to this dreadful team and spend another few days complaining and whining about how our team sucks and why we need a fire sale.

Looking forward for ALL of our lines to have a big night and for our defense to decide to join us.

Oh yes and Hendrik should also make it a point to be there in body, mind and spirit... all three tonight, okay Hendrik?

We will not be extorted by Staal... we will pay him market value and any sentimental premium for him.... time and time again, we pay too much for players who are simply NOT WORTH IT.... I'd start with Girardi.

If Staal demands something extraordinary, then we'll just shop around and see if we can get something better for the price he is asking... Staal is not even a top 30 defenseman in this league, so his asking price needs to be in line with his contribution... otherwise, why not just go after someone worth his asking price...

Oh, need to mention that Marty St. Louis is playing like his old self, which is great news... this guy is one of the scariest players in the NHL along with Alex Ovechkin.  Seems when things are going right, he is a threat to score anytime he touches the puck in the attack zone... I shudder to think of him playing against us.... glad he is with the Rangers!!!

As for the defense.... I just think Girardi has experienced early aging... he needs to drink beet juice or ginseng or something... looks TWO STEPS slower than last year... appears to be planted in our zone with the oppositions forwards buzzing untouched around him.....

He needs a wake up call... anyone have an alarm clock??!!

No sense in piling on Kostka, but he was brutally bad....

With Nash, his goals are not the result of bulldozing through players into the center of the net, but about better timing... seems he is slightly better which enough and makes a difference in his goal scoring...

Watching Dan Girardi and I have flashes of WADE REDDEN and BRAD RICHARDS

Dan needs to step up, if he can.  I'm not sure whether the wear and tear has finally caught up with him - I hope not.  When he is playing well, he is a top four defenseman.  But frankly, he is playing like an old man...  slow, bad reflexes, horrible physical play, easy to get beat wide and non existent in front of the crease.

We all panicked last year, and then we ended up playing for the Stanley Cup, so I would not panic at all.... I'd settle for just being frustrated at our pee wee like play in our own end.

Seems we just can't get the rhythm to transitioning from D to O without giving the puck away ten times.

Maybe that is just rust, who knows, but we are just not ready.

We really should put Malone in.  We still need grit.  This was our glaring weakness last year.  No one is really scared of us.  Yes, we put fear in the opposition with our speed, but we can't get close to their goaltender to knock in more loose pucks...

Anyone watching the game would be frustrated at how poorly we play in our defensive zone... maybe it our timing breaking out, but we are getting shellacked in our own zone.  Once the opposition starts cycling, it looks like we are always a man down... hey wait a minute... we were always a man down!

We've got to figure out how to get possession of the puck and move it out systematically... looks like pond hockey when we are coming out of our end.  Girardi has officially lost it..... someone needs to give the guy a compass to figure out which is our offensive zone and which is our defensive zone... having said that, we sucked even worse last year, so this is an improvement....

Where is Boychuk when we need him.... I am afraid that unless we get our shit together, the Islanders are going to have a party in our zone and dose Lundqvist with a champagne of pucks....

Without Nash, say 4-2.

Our defense is a bit shaky, but our offense should be fired up... putting up at least a few goals.... what is with Dan Girardi?  I'll assess him closely tonight.... but he seems stuck in second gear... not that he is making any glaring mistakes, but he is boring to watch and just doesn't seem to have the same impact on the game as in yesteryears....

To be fair, I have not watched him closely in the first two games....

By the way, for what it is worth... putting Duclair with Nash is a good idea... Duclair is scary quick and he knows how to time the puck to a lumbering Nash cutting to the net.  Maybe that is chemistry... whatever... but it works.

Duclair on the third line is a waste of talent.  Same as putting Marty St. Louis or Pavel Bure on the third line... not to knock our third liners, but you have to try and get rhythmn... Duclair and Nash seem to gel.

Shame we could not get McQuaid from Boston when we had the chance... oh well, hindsight is 20/20.... but we are still a damn good team with injuries to two of our better players... still, I'd like to see Malone fit in somewhere... especially against a high octane team like Columbus.... that is the kind of grit and "presence" we need.....

Tanner Glass will do the job.  He will not scare anyone, but he will not back down.... Zuc and Kreider are arguably the worst fighters in the league yet two of the better players....

Talbot.... well, he is human... I am not disappointed, we can't win 80 straight... but let's show a bit of snarl out there... consistency consistency consistency....

Duclair.... he is awesome... maybe the string bean look will work in the big burly NHL... but we'll eventually have to protect him as opponents will definitely run him.... that is the price we will pay.

But he looks simply awesome... his timing, speed, quickness are unparalleled since - dare I say.....  PAVEL BURE.

I'd love Hayes and Duclair in our line up for the whole season... scoring playing well.... The only fear I have of Duclair is that he is a bit light... only 180lbs or so.... he might not be able to take the full season of getting banged all over the place... Hayes will want to play in the big leagues because I am sure that was part of the deal for him coming over.... so he'll at least get a shot...

GIVE GARTNERA CUP... I'd agree with your line-ups  except I'd like to see Hayes on the fourth line with Malone and Moore.. ordinarily, I'd say this is the kiss of death to be with a "checking line" but look at the two players - Moore and Malone - big time players who can also score.... this could be a very devastating line, given other teams will try to match up with our first two lines...  I don't see another fourth line in the league being quite as lethal as ours....

We could roll four very dangerous lines... I think we did a damn good job bottling up the Hawks top players....   LET TEAMS ADJUST TO US, RATHER THAN US ADJUSTING TO THEM.

I just think Hayes need a shot... and if he can't play center and prefers wing... then maybe that is the answer.... alternatively let him center the third line..... Miller to the second line.... when Step returns, Hayes back to the fourth line wing....

Thoughts please....

The silver lining of Stepan's injury is that it opens up TWO spots at center for Hayes, Lombardi or Miller.... Brassard moves to the first line... Miller to the second line....Hayes or Lombardi to the third line and Moore remains on the fourth line.... I would count on Moore stepping up to the third line with ease if we do not have enough there, because he is a very versatile and dependable player.  But I know Hayes or Lombardi will get the job done.
