@majrod @Tango9 It really breaks my heart.  You know where I live and what my wife does for a living, so we're knee-deep in the military community even 14 years after I got out (I served 13).  These young officers and NCOs... best I can describe the just... zombieness?  I guess that's the word I'd use.

There's that part of you and I that wants to take control of any and every situation, and I'm not a real big fan of feeling helpless.  But I feel that way around the troops these days.

@majrod @Tango9 Yeah, it all boils down to personal preference.  Are the Nike's more comfy on your feet or the Asics?

It does get pricey, though, so my advice to the garden variety shooter is try everything; use your buddy's; etc etc.

And yeah, Will, it's good to see you (well... read you).  You know I love pokin' ya in the ribs.  Yer a good egg.

Oh... have an EOTech.  Whoops.

That's what I said after I took it to the range.  Do not like it.  I fell into the "tacticool" barrel on that one and bought it bcause that's what the cool kids were wearing.

huge mistake.

Lesson learned and what I'm looking to pass on here is simply:  whatever can make you as accurate as you need to be that you're comfortable with is what you go with.

Having hung up my uniforms, I won't be shooting at two-legged targets with a rifle and not go to jail, so I don't need pinpoint accuracy at 500 meters except for fun now.  And given the price of ammo, fun is relative.

Maybe we're all just getting old.

Reader's Digest sights?  Like that work with bifocals from a wheelchair?  and a bullhorn attachment for the rail system so you can hear "GET OFF MY LAWN!" from the neighboring zip code?  ; )

I've had half an ear to the ground for the last several years, but (and Rod you can probably provide more insight because of your history) haven't we done a wholesale purge of our own officer corps since Obama took office?

Last I heard, being a field grade officer (was about 6 months ago) was like being justin bieber in a prison shower room.

Prior to that, company grade O's were punted (like 2 years back) wholesale.

It's a new world, and this ain't your daddy's military.

You and I have been over this topic many times.  Best place to be is a mid-level NCO, I'm still convinced.

Company grade officers have to put up with so much nonsense nowadays (PPT Ranger!) that it's remarkable anything gets done.  Senior NCOs; (most) lose focus.  Put a silver eagle on someone's should and it's tantamount to a lobotomy.

Politics is always there.  You have politics at home, you have it work.  But it's not an excuse when people's lives are at stake.  Not directed at you, Will.  We both think alike.  Just ranting a little.

None of which are true.

You have to understand that the largest percentage of currently serving troops are from families of warriors in the US.  The vast majority of officers and enlisted come from parents who where officers or enlisted and this goes back to before the civil war.

We absolutely have a warrior class.  Those that don't serve don't send their kids to serve.  Those that do/did, do send their kids to serve.  It's a fact.

My father was a Marine (major, vietnam), mom was Army (E-5, administration), Stepdad was Army (E-5 weapons).

@HonestBroker247 If you were raised and reared in a western society where the individual is the main focus, you can not help but not to.  Surrendering your identity and putting the whole or the group before yourself is almost unAmerican.

@HonestBroker247"As a free person I should be able to do what I want, when I want, and how I want ... to rise and/or fall on my own merits.  We value freedom and all that it stands for, and at the pinnacle of freedom is the individual.  We are snowflakes. This stands in stark contrast to the ethos and culture of the military where the individual must be suppressed for the sake of the larger group or the team."

I disagree with your distinction. In fact, I think the free person doesn't see themself as a "snowflake" (WTF?) but as just and individual.  What's wrong with that?  And in the military, you're not just a cog in the wheel.  The team is made up of unique individuals who all contribute, by choice, to the team.

In fact, those teams are the best teams:  those that *chose* to bring their individuality to the fight and meld with the group.  There's no sacrifice of the "Me," but the conscious choice to mold what you bring to the fight to the group that makes the group exceptional.

There is only disharmony when you view it from a very narrow lens.

I'm reminded of a bit by the historian William McNeill:

"such skill, repeated day in and day out, a dimension which the Prince of Orange and his fellows probably understood very dimly if at all.  For when a group of men move their arms and leg muscles in unison for prolonged periods of time, a primitive and very powerful social bond wells up among them."

The training of a green beret, followed on by the experience that green beret has in training others is the pinnacle of the fighter.  These men build armies.
