@jammonstrald Well said.  Even though I watch all the games (driving advertising revenue), pay $90 for a ticket, and $80 for a $30 pair of sweatpants, who am I to criticize a team that went 3-10-3 against the Rangers, Islanders, Flyers, and Capitals?

The important thing is that we all have fun.  Years from now, do you think guys like Perron, Bennett, Kunitz, and Sutter are going to remember the weeks they spent scraping past lottery teams and getting their tails kicked by every team with a pulse, or all those fun post-game trips to Dairy Queen with Coach Johnson? I bet their 2014-2015 Pittsburgh Penguins participation trophy will last a lot longer than some fleeting accomplishment, like a power play goal.

Only rationale I can see for this trade is that
(a) Management saw Maatta, Pouliot, Dumoulin, and Harrington as having higher ceilings than Despres, and
(b) Lovejoy is a better skater than Despres; he may have been more mobile than Bortuzzo, but quicker skaters could still get the corner on him.

Remember when Zuccarello, Hagelin, and St. Louis would skate circles around Bortuzzo last spring, then keep him and Scuderi hemmed in their own zone for 90 seconds?  That was awesome; Borts would have totally kicked their a**es if he could have ever caught them.

I was wondering how we'd top the reaction to the Winnik trade--getting rid of Zack Sill for a guy that went +15 with the Leafs--but we may be doing so with this trade.  I can't believe the Pens are mortgaging the future for a chance to win while they have 2 generation talents in their prime!  I mean, there's a 10% chance that 4th round pick could have been the 2nd coming of Tyler Kennedy!

Take a look at the 2009 playoff roster, and tell me which of these guys was a better fighter than Bortuzzo.  The regular season is for settling scores; the playoffs are about who can actually play:

Kunitz-Crosby-Guerin
Fedotenko-Malkin-Talbot
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Satan, Adams, Dupuis, Sykora

Orpik-Gonchar
Eaton-Letang
Scuderi-Gill
Goligoski, Boucher

Tom Wilson strikes me as having all of the meathead/bullying instincts of Milan Lucic, but none of the scoring touch.

Brilliant move to antagonize Malkin by bumping him in the pre-game.  When someone ticks off Malkin and he properly channels it, he cannot be stopped.

@Hunter Hockey @Jed_Eckert It was a garbage play, and could have led to a critical player being injured.  I see no way it could be justified as a hockey play--Ovechkin was frustrated because Letang cut him off while chasing a loose puck into the Pens zone.  The only thing Ovechkin could have accomplished was injuring Letang.  Slashing Letang did not make it any more likely he could have gotten to the puck first.

Pens need to deter this crap--you hurt their stars, they hurt yours.  It's not coincidence that nobody hurt Gretzky with Semenko lurking.

@Hunter Hockey @Jed_Eckert Playoffs are not the time for retribution--the regular season is.  Pens are (currently) secure enough in a playoff position that they can spare two points for a longer term benefit--nobody f***s with their stars.

Quickest way for the Flyers to drop Rinaldo would be Downie taking runs at Giroux.  Unseemly, but effective.

Nice of the refs to serve that one up on a silver platter for the Caps.  They kicked the Pens' asses in the first 2 games, but this one was a gift.  Ovechkin gets away with a Paul Bunyan on Letang simply because Letang out-angled him for a puck, but they'll call a ticky-tack slash on Letang to give the Caps a 5-on-3 with 5 minutes left?  Absolute horseshit.

I agree with the Downie/LaPierre antics, to an extent. If Ovechkin isn't going to own up to his cheapshots, the code allows for targeting other stars.  Unlike #8, Backstrom isn't built like a tank. Just saying.

@Raymond Bowman @Craig Ross That sounds like Game 1 of the 2011 Tampa Bay series.  Might want to check your memory on the assist though--Crosby was gone after the Tampa Bay game on 1/5, and Kovalev wasn't acquired until 2/24.  They never played a single game together.

You're right on Kovalev though--he still had the hands, but could no longer skate for shit.

I was thinking "Hell No" until you mentioned swapping out Sutter; Richards' numbers look even better when you realize he's been playing the 4th line in LA, and probably hasn't gotten as much time with Kopitar as Sutter has with Malkin.

I haven't crunched the numbers in any way, but they'd have to move someone else besides Sutter to take on a (pro-rated) $5.25 M cap hit.  And since this is a Holmgren contract, there are still about 16 years or so left of the term.

In the old days, when teams (besides Philadelphia) used to dress goons who were there purely to fight--(cough, Dave "Cementhead" Semenko, cough)--said goon would beat the ever loving shit out of Rinaldo if even he looked at one of the stars.  And if Rinaldo cowered away from the fight, guess who was aiming for Giroux's or Voracek's head at the next available opportunity?  If faced with such a dilemma, even Paul Holmgren is smart enough to realize that Rinaldo should be sacrificed and/or cut if he didn't face the music and knock the shit out.  Fighting can be an effective way to police the game, but for better or worse, it is being eliminated.

Also, Arcobello makes me wonder if Shero and Bylsma are still orchestrating things behind the scenes.  Much like Chris Bourque, Zach Boychuk, and Jason Williams before, some guy that no other NHL team wanted is available on the waiver wire, and allowed to a play regular shift for about 10 games after it's obvious he has no business in the NHL.

Let's not be so forgiving of the team for every goal--the "bullshit shot from the point goal" came courtesy of a no-look, backhand, up the middle of the ice pass from behind the goal line by Beau Bennett.  I guess I should congratulate him for managing to do that with his head up his ass and also not injuring himself, but all I can think is "what a horrible decision".

I don't know what it is with this team; the roster looks better than last year and individually, most players (sans Kunitz and Sutter) seem to be playing as well as you'd expect.  But somehow they keep losing; it seems as if it just takes one mistake for the wind to go out of their sails for a period or so.

At least they didn't resort to the Flyers' cheapshot thuggery like they did in the 2012 playoffs.  If anyone tries to make mention of the Pens' dressing Downie, Sill, and Farnham last night, please ask for proof of when they elbowed somebody in the head, boarded them, punched them while down, slew-footed, intentional stickwork or spearing etc.  Those guys came by their PIM honestly last night, and only in retaliation to Rinaldo's garbage.

Bobby Farnham is an annoying little fuck who runs around hitting people bigger than him (pretty much everyone), and earns his penalties in 2 minute (roughing) and 5 minute intervals because he'll answer the bell when challenged by an opponent.

Zach Rinaldo is a cheap-shotting bastard trying to end the careers of other players with head shots, late hits, and runs from behind.  He earns his penalties in 5 minute (major) and 10 minute (misconduct) intervals.

Best part about the Neal-knee-to-Marchand's head incident was the fact that Marchand wouldn't even have been on the ice if he hadn't dove after brushing against Crosby's stick a few seconds earlier.  He tried to pull it off one or two other times in the same game, but the refs knew who he is, and ignored it every time.

I think he is playing hurt.  I don't know if I read it here or somewhere else, but reportedly the CBC has been estimating his top speed in games they televise.  In the Olympics, it was around 36-37 mph, but he only got up to 30 mph against Columbus.  It seems like he's not driving to the net as much as he used to either.

@PenGeno @SgtCaronI mentioned until after "the first 10 minutes of game 3".

I recall a centering pass by Dubinsky to someone the Fleury poke-checked away and essentially saved Game 3.  I just take offense to anyone who insinuates he performed heroics in Games 1 or 2--he didn't.  He was good enough to win those games, but not good enough to be the primary reason.

And I'm not going to neglect the fact that letting Columbus dominate possession for the 2nd and 3rd periods is a good strategy for success.  Bylsma will be coaching for his job over the next 7 days.

Unless you meant "best player outside of Matt Niskanen", I'm going to disagree.  Every mistake by a defenseman ended up in the back of the net for the first 2 games, and the first 10 minutes of game 3.  I know he's not primarily at fault, but a good goalie will bail out his defense at least occasionally.  In 2009, just think of the breakaways by Ovechkin in game 7 and Helm in game 6 when Scuderi and Orpik, respectively, got torched.

I saw where Boston had a 9-0 advantage over Detroit last night in 2-on-1 breakaways last night, but "only" won 3-0 (one empty-netter).  I am not confident Fleury would have bailed out his defense 7+ times like that.

He is completely fucked from the neck up.  Time for Vokoun and/or Zatkoff.  If he's not going to figure it out after 5 years, should we be confident he'll figure it out by Saturday?

@PuebloPete I'll join you in incurring the wrath of the Kool-Aid drinkers--nevermind that the Pens have played like garbage since the Olympic Break:
 - Everybody in the league except Crosby has picked up that he loves to throw long cross-ice passes begging to be broken up or intercepted
 - Nice job by Neal to negate the extra skater advantage at the end by taking lazy whack at the Coyote players' stick instead of moving his fee
 - I still don't trust Fleury; it looks like he's guessing at the puck sometimes.  I've noticed him flinch on shots that don't even get through the mess of bodies in front.  Zatkoff has been well-positioned enough (and trusts his positioning) to make saves on shots he doesn't even see come through.  I can't think of any examples of the same happening with Fleury
 - Can't wait for Shero to re-sign Orpik to a decent-sized contract this summer; the Penguins definitely need another slow-footed defenseman that contributes nothing offensively.
 - He may be wrong to take it to the press, but Orpik is right in calling out his teammates for retaliatory penalties.  Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, and now Jokinen can easily be goaded.
 - Rest Maatta.
 - Malkin has been playing better over the past 2 weeks, but he still has a tendency for selfish, retaliatory penalties.
 - He put out a nice effort today, but Pyatt has been mostly horrid since he was signed.  Slooooowwww, mediocre hands, and doesn't really use his size.  Just like with Zack Boychuck and Chris Bourque, the Pens' management will take about 15 games too long to realize why this guy was readily available.

I will watch every game and root for them through the duration, but a first round upset will not be shocking.   Other than the Anaheim game--in which they were outplayed--their post-Olympic wins have been over some terrible teams (it is fun to lump the Caps in as such); Chicago was a curb-stomping, Philly prison-raped them for 4/6 periods, they were out-played by SJ, and as good as St. Louis has been, they've been playing like dogshit over the past week (still good enough to beat the Pens).
