Best part about the Neal-knee-to-Marchand's head incident was the fact that Marchand wouldn't even have been on the ice if he hadn't dove after brushing against Crosby's stick a few seconds earlier.  He tried to pull it off one or two other times in the same game, but the refs knew who he is, and ignored it every time.

@NicolasC11 @Jed_Eckert@BlowguinMessier?  You mean the guy who used to regularly elbow people in the head?  He's Matt Cooke with Esa Tikkanen to take the blame!

Just like Crosby, Messier was an outstanding player but had his faults.  It's not like the Penguins have gone Cup-less with Sid as the Captain.

@Blowguin These days, it's kind of his job as team captain to lobby for calls.  Otherwise, every captain in the league is a crybagby.

I'll agree he talked too much as a rookie, but he's earned the right by now.  He'll never live down that rookie season.

@Say my Name @NicolasC11Overall?  He's worshipped.

Regardless of whatever he did in Game 6, the Pens are better off with him. This is like complaining that Gretzky is a pu** that needs Semenko to fight his battles for him.

@Say my Name @NicolasC11He's still the best player in the game when healthy--that can cover for a lot of faults.

And if anyone insists that he was healthy for this series, I'll say McDonagh was healthy when Lee Stempniak danced around him.

@Brukie_ @Jed_EckertFor starters, Rick Nash's mom scored more often in Pittsburgh in the past 2 weeks than he did.  And it took fewer shots (mostly tequila) for her to get there.

@Brukie_ @Jed_EckertDon't worry--I'll think of something more creative, and aggravating when the time comes.

But I promise to be classier than to make any references to St. Louis' mother.  Rick Nash's mother is fair game, though.

Were some Pensblog posters trolling on the Rangers' blog earlier on this series?

I'm just wondering if we did something to deserve this.  Otherwise, these Rangers fans better be careful; I'm not one to troll myself, but I'll make an exception if/when they get bounced from the playoffs.

Some context--no team that has gone 7 games in each of the 1st 2 rounds has ever won the cup.  You reap what you sew . . .

If only the Penguins would fight as hard before the whistle, when they weren't trailing by 2 goals.

They are in full melt-down mode--the usual suspects taking retaliatory penalties and cheap shots.  I hope to Roberts I am wrong on Tuesday, but I feel like I've seen this the past 2 springs already.

I think he is playing hurt.  I don't know if I read it here or somewhere else, but reportedly the CBC has been estimating his top speed in games they televise.  In the Olympics, it was around 36-37 mph, but he only got up to 30 mph against Columbus.  It seems like he's not driving to the net as much as he used to either.

@PenGeno @SgtCaronI mentioned until after "the first 10 minutes of game 3".

I recall a centering pass by Dubinsky to someone the Fleury poke-checked away and essentially saved Game 3.  I just take offense to anyone who insinuates he performed heroics in Games 1 or 2--he didn't.  He was good enough to win those games, but not good enough to be the primary reason.

And I'm not going to neglect the fact that letting Columbus dominate possession for the 2nd and 3rd periods is a good strategy for success.  Bylsma will be coaching for his job over the next 7 days.

Unless you meant "best player outside of Matt Niskanen", I'm going to disagree.  Every mistake by a defenseman ended up in the back of the net for the first 2 games, and the first 10 minutes of game 3.  I know he's not primarily at fault, but a good goalie will bail out his defense at least occasionally.  In 2009, just think of the breakaways by Ovechkin in game 7 and Helm in game 6 when Scuderi and Orpik, respectively, got torched.

I saw where Boston had a 9-0 advantage over Detroit last night in 2-on-1 breakaways last night, but "only" won 3-0 (one empty-netter).  I am not confident Fleury would have bailed out his defense 7+ times like that.

He is completely fucked from the neck up.  Time for Vokoun and/or Zatkoff.  If he's not going to figure it out after 5 years, should we be confident he'll figure it out by Saturday?

Embarrassing by Orpik to lose the puck like that, but let's not let Fleury off the hook for giving up the short side from that angle.

@PuebloPete I'll join you in incurring the wrath of the Kool-Aid drinkers--nevermind that the Pens have played like garbage since the Olympic Break:
 - Everybody in the league except Crosby has picked up that he loves to throw long cross-ice passes begging to be broken up or intercepted
 - Nice job by Neal to negate the extra skater advantage at the end by taking lazy whack at the Coyote players' stick instead of moving his fee
 - I still don't trust Fleury; it looks like he's guessing at the puck sometimes.  I've noticed him flinch on shots that don't even get through the mess of bodies in front.  Zatkoff has been well-positioned enough (and trusts his positioning) to make saves on shots he doesn't even see come through.  I can't think of any examples of the same happening with Fleury
 - Can't wait for Shero to re-sign Orpik to a decent-sized contract this summer; the Penguins definitely need another slow-footed defenseman that contributes nothing offensively.
 - He may be wrong to take it to the press, but Orpik is right in calling out his teammates for retaliatory penalties.  Malkin, Crosby, Neal, Kunitz, and now Jokinen can easily be goaded.
 - Rest Maatta.
 - Malkin has been playing better over the past 2 weeks, but he still has a tendency for selfish, retaliatory penalties.
 - He put out a nice effort today, but Pyatt has been mostly horrid since he was signed.  Slooooowwww, mediocre hands, and doesn't really use his size.  Just like with Zack Boychuck and Chris Bourque, the Pens' management will take about 15 games too long to realize why this guy was readily available.

I will watch every game and root for them through the duration, but a first round upset will not be shocking.   Other than the Anaheim game--in which they were outplayed--their post-Olympic wins have been over some terrible teams (it is fun to lump the Caps in as such); Chicago was a curb-stomping, Philly prison-raped them for 4/6 periods, they were out-played by SJ, and as good as St. Louis has been, they've been playing like dogshit over the past week (still good enough to beat the Pens).

The 4th line is getting abused in this series.  Vitale can get by on hustle, but Adams and Asham are just way too slow.  Looks like Bylsma was trying to protect them in game 2 by double-shifting Crosby and Malkin with Adams and Asham.

Burke's got a point; it's not like the Leafs were ever fortunate enough to have a draft pick that would allow them to draft a young franchise center in the mold of Crosby, Malkin, Seguin, et al.

Apologies to anyone who may have already made a similar crack in this thread; don't feel like going through the 500 comments I've missed.

@Mrmcgibblets  @Jed_Eckert  I have no qualms about Errey's commentary--unlike a lot of hack analysts who basically do slow motion play by play, Errey will actually breakdown and explain a play in terms of responsibilities and positioning.  I'm just shocked to see him sober and not dropping obvious double entendres.

Anyone enjoy the invisibility of Milan Lucic this game?Biggest pu**y in the league; will always line someone up in the corner for a big hit, but never has the guts to go in first himself. Other than one scoring chance, he pretty much quit after he found out he couldn't run over Engelland (or Letang).
