RIP School Kids Records in Chapel Hill. Everything you want in a small town record store. Centrally located on Franklin St, they were stocked top to bottom with great music. This was a well-curated store. With the quality of the music mattering most. Big label, small label you name it. In addition to something that may have been raved about in a Rolling Stone, Spin or later Pitchfork, they always had great first albums by local acts and other great unheard of groups they encountered who knows where. And the staff was excellent at making recommendations. They would really work with you to find something you'd like. They were also a great resource for recs about upcoming shows at some of the smaller venues around town. I'd know most of the acts coming through the Cat's Cradle, but they would tip me off on the hotness at the smaller spots. Can't recall a time I felt like I'd been steered wrong by that store.

A word the Rose haters: Do not communicate this dislike out loud if you ever visit Chicago. Other figures on the list of who Chicagoans will defend to the death:
R Kelly (the one I really don't get)
My take on Rose: A stone cold assassin on the court who is deeply devoted to his city and team and is amazingly humble off the court (not a common feature of the stone-cold assassin type: see Kobe, biggest assassin of the past decade and since MJ). And that combo goes a long way to explaining all the love for him.
