I got one of these in the mail a few weeks ago. It keeps sitting in my pocket and I keep forgetting to use it. You've inspired me to try to remember next time, Charlie!
Nice review, Brooks. Is there any "novelty" smoke that IS worth the money/time to smoke?
Nice review, Burt. Of the sampler, I'm most intrigued by the V 460!
Almost missed this one - thanks for another great contest. I've heard good things about these - would love to try!
Absolutely love the Cain F Lancero - glad to see these back out there.
@RobertShkreli @mistapk Go Big Blue!
Look at Kyle - all important and stuff! Good for you, man!
Very surprised to see this rated higher than the Dirty Rat. I've had one UF-13 from May and thought it was good, but don't know that I'd put it over the Rat. I look forward to trying again and seeing if my opinion has changed.
On the one hand, I'm intrigued by this - I like the idea of the market providing feedback on products. On the other hand, I'm not sure how I feel about the concept of consumers paying for "test blends". I don't know why - it just seems like I shouldn't be spending money on something that a company isn't firmly behind.
Arguably the best cigar I ever smoked. So fortunate to have a coffin.
Nice job, gentlemen! Tatuaje did exceptionally well.
@Charlie Minato I'm signed up, but, as an FYI, gmail throws the confirmation email to the Spam folder
My only regret about this cigar is that I split a box instead of buying one all for myself.
I had a lot of faith in Willy to produce something exceptional with his debut and I know he didn't disappoint. Yet another DE release that is going to garner my attention.
Nice review, Brian. I'm not a huge fan of NUBs, but this one might be worth tracking down.
@Charlie Minato@MisterBastahrd I don't have a good answer for that - Greg has much more experienceso maybe he does. If I were to guess, I'd assume its just in the nature of what it is - short filler, even by the definition Saka gave of the Papas, are trimmings...remnants...scraps. If I could make an analogy, I think people view it like food...
Filet Mignon is more expensive than hamburger. I still like hamburger, but I love filet; however, if you give me someone's filet leftovers or a hamburger, I'd prefer the hamburger. Now, I'm not saying I agree with this or this is how I view the Papas, but that's, I guess, how some people view it.
I think if a machine made cigar was released by a major manufacturer at a similar price point, you'd see the same "outrage" even before people smoked it. Beyond that, I don't think most consumers/retailers have enough knowledge of the tobacco leaf costs to have opinions beyond that - short/long filler is just a widely known concept.
@Charlie Minato Since these cigars were first rumored, I've seen this exact same discussion numerous times on every forum I frequent and lurk on. In fact, I believe I've seen both Saka and JD acknowledge this is something they will have to overcome in the marketplace. Short filler - even if it is Liga short filler - has a negative connotation to the consumer. Additionally, people see the price point and feel that there are long filler cigars that they prefer at similar or better MSRPs - and again the negative connotation of short filler pushes them to discount the Fritas without even trying it.
Of course, Saka is on record as saying, "this is NOT your father's short fill - it is made exclusively of 2nd cuts of No. 9 capa and is filled entirely with the table trimmings from the production of all the other LP cigars being made. We actually hand sort the tuck and chaveta cuts by pieces into their original leaf varieties and thicknesses and then create their exact filler blend from scratch. And like all LP, we only allow our best pairs to handcraft them. To my knowledge no one has ever done this before - the result is a rich, super consistent petite corona that provides a 40 minute smoke and even holds an inch plus ash - will be packed in 4-ct tins - MSRP $23.95 - the name stems from my fat guy love for French Fries and just as I can't eat just one, I can't stop myself from smoking these" and since I know Saka to be a guy who doesn't bullshit, I just see this as a cheaper Liga.
Either way, no one knows until they smoke it.
@PHXCigarGuy @CigrGy Thanks, Patrick...I was about to comment on your review to ask. That was actually what I got out of the reviews. I'll probably give the JC a smoke in the coming weeks
Thanks for the review, Brooks. I picked up a box of these when they are available by me, but only one due to the $65 price point (with taxes). I was very curious if they were ready to be smoked immediately, but based off of your review, I think I'll be sitting on this for quite some time.
@Jonathan Drew Great job as always, JD! Thanks
