I loved Torts, and I really think that turned when I watched that HBO special.  The way he cared about the Rangers, his players, the fans was great.  What got me most was the stuff you never saw like that bond he had with that kid Liam.  That was amazing and the kind of stuff that makes me love this sport even more.  I saw that kid coming out of a game, where they beat the Devils 4-0 mind you, and I said "Hey you're that famous kid who's friends with Coach!" and the smile on that kids face could light up Times Square.  That's the kind of shit that the media doesn't cover cause it really doesn't sell papers.

And speaking of the media, I loved the way he handled the press.  I think we all know of his bond with Larry Brooks and saw that video of him crushing Larry's face and ego, and you know what, Larry deserved it.  He's been a bully in this town from time to time and talked all sorts of crap and he got what was coming to him.

Rangers had a good run under Torts and it was a fun team to watch but all things come to an end.  Anyway, when's camp start?

Eh, these things happen.  I complained about Boyle about as much as I praised him.  Grinder, good faceoff guy, chip in a few goals, replaceable.

@rangers7389 I agree man.  The comments this morning are tough to read.  One loss and people are questioning Hank's contract?  I think I've had enough Internet for the morning.

@AnnoyingJoe @DPSnottyIt was a really good movie.  I wouldn't miss a Rangers game for it but the movie is very well acted and has a good story.

What a cheap shot by Simmonds at the end of the game.  Slashing with his stick and not just a slash, he took a good couple of whacks.  That's why you can't eliminate fighting in the game.  Players have to be kept accountable for their actions and if they are going to use their stick as a weapon, someone's getting a beating for it.

@Rangerssuck  Well, you can't argue with your sound logic.  I'm going to completely change my opinion and loyalty as a fan of a local sports team that I choose to root for based off of your well written prose and just give up on watching Rangers hockey altogether.

Now I'm questioning all my life decisions.  When you get a moment, from what seems to be a well balanced and stable stream of conscious thought, would you mind telling me what else I"m doing wrong with my life?  Have you ever considered being a life coach?  If not, maybe you could just babysit my kid unsupervised?

If you want me to pass along any pearls of wisdom to my mom just let me know.  That is, if you can find time to stop doing her.  Stud.

@NYrangers79I was just about to write something under the same sentiment.   Why is everyone shitting on someone trying to earn more money?  Player pay agents not because they need a talking head but because these guys are professional negotiators just like GM's.  OI can't stand the "he's greedy" line of crap.  If someone had a chance to earn more money, you'd hold out for it too.  Yeah it sucks when you are on the verge of losing a fan favorite and a very good hockey player but this isn't just about today.  This is about paying someone $6million+ for 6 years and possibly handcuffing the franchise for years.

I know this has nothing to do with it but every time I see Cam Fowler's name I get a douche chill up my spine.  He was sitting right there for the Rangers - a gift from the hockey gods and they passed.  Not a slight against McIlrath but man, a large mistake.

I'm sure this may be a tired subject but I still think the Rangers made a big mistake taking McIlrath over Cam Fowler in 2010.  Maybe time proves me wrong but I knew this would bite them in the ass.

I, for one, think that the cap is partially unfair and let me explain my reasoning.  Depending on what state you are in, taxes are different.  In Texas there are no state taxes but there are in NYC. My point is, when it comes down to dollars and cents the markets that have no state taxes have an advantage because they can sign a player for less money saving cap room under the idea that they will pay no taxes.  So $10 million in one state can be $7 million in another.  Also, the cost of living in NYC is so much higher than say Tampa Bay.  I wish the NHL would structure the cap in terms of the market and state taxes.

@PenaltySh0t While I don't really disagree here there's gotta be something said about Messier.  From what I read, he changed the way that the team went about representing themselves and the organization.  Spending all that time playing and being a captain he's had to have learned what it takes to coach.  Believing in your leadership makes players better just like in business.  Work for an crappy boss and the work suffers.  That being said, if he does get the job and they don't win immediately then there's a risk that The King leaves but that's a risk with not winning anyway.

Pay zero attention to any of Raissman's articles.  The guy is the gossip queen of NY sports.  His old, tired antics are there just to try and get people to click on his articles.  Seriously fart joke reporting.

If anyone forgets how great of a guy Torts is, go watch the HBO special from last year.  The guy is a class act and although he give off a crappy persona through the NY media, he really cares about Rangers hockey and the fans.  I go crazy with his line changes and his tight offensive scheme but that's his style.  The personnel changes with the kids I'm sure come from not only Torts but his staff.  The kids will be fine.

I think this trade had to be done for all the right reasons.  For one, the Rangers need cap space for next year to sign all of our core guys.  This team is being built around the kids, Nash and The King.  Stating the obvious.  From what I read about Clowe, he's a solid player that will fill the areas not on a stat sheet and we'll need room to sign him.

I really like Gabby, he carried this franchise for a few years and after watching the HBO special I thought he was a pretty good teammate.  I'm sure he'll score a ton of goals against the Rangers but this is more about a full season and what needs to be done to make this team great with this core.  I think the Rangers are on the cusp of the Yankees run when the Core Four starter their magic in '96.  Girardi, McD, Staal, MDZ, Stepan, Hags, Kreider, Miller, Cally, Clowe, Brassard, Moore, McIlrath(?) and the King. Not too shabby.

I don't think anyone would be surprised if Richards gets bought out through amnesty but if he can be Richards of old then it only helps this team.

Love this blog, love Rangers hockey.  Go get 'em boys!

@KevinDeLury That's what I love about this game.  It's about respect, honor and the players keeping things in check.  It's not about trying to seriously hurt someone and ruin their career.

@Beckfan5 Completely agree and I'm usually on board with getting big time players but it's just not about Kreider. It's about long term plans and signing the players we have now who will be FA's. As Ranger fans we've waited a long time to see this plan come to fruition and giving up cap space will kill all that's been built. I guess I see getting Nash now and riding Hank for the next 3 - 5 year before he starts to decline but I'd like to see how far we can go with Step, MDZ, McD, Hags and guys like Kreider and Erixson.

There is no way the Rangers get Parise. It's just not going to happen - he'll stay a Devil. Trade rumors sell papers and lead to web clicks which leads to ad revenue and sales. It's as simple as that. I do not believe that the Rangers will make a move for Nash and they will stay the course with youth surrounded by a veteran presence and role players. We could have a Parise/Nash player in Kreider at a cheaper cost for a long period of time. Don't believe the hype it's a sequel.
