It's been said before but here we go again, if schools want to control players for more than one year at a time then they should give longer than one year scholarships.
So, would he like it if we played 9 games and threw out the worst loss?
Don't worry about the left jabs, it's the right hook that'll kill you.
I'm not fussed about a HC talking to/for the home media. The people who count know that if you don't have to play two or three top five teams every year you won't have two or three extra losses every year.
Arkansas is in an awkward position thanks to Bobby Petrino but is in overall good shape throughout their athletic department and has an AD that has shown that he's loyal to a fault with his people and not meddlesome.
Tennessee on the other hand has a long history of backstabbing their head coaches (Majors, Fulmer, Summitt), meddling in their head coaches staffs (how long has the current football staff been there?) and has been a general dumpster fire for several years (that WHOOOSH you heard was Lane Kiffen).
Jon Gruden may in fact wind up at Tennessee but why on earth would a man that can write his own ticket want to go to work under those conditions? In-laws? oreally. Wife is from there? Have you ever seen Tampa, you can't be serious if you think that she's pining to move back. Because he spent some time there 20 years ago?
If Jon really want's to coach in college Tennessee seems to be quite a stretch.
I see your point but the JoeBob Wantabees of this world get so wrapped up in the talent aspect of the game that they ignore the part that preparation, planning and pure effort play and they tend to ignore anybody not blessed with an over abundance of talent.
I get that people get their egos wrapped up in their teams and their sense of self gets tied to the success or failure of their teams to the point that they interject their arrogance upon their teams to the point that anyone else is substandard. The part that doesn't seem to occur to them is that their own teams success is tied to their own preparation, planing and pure effort too.
Ignoring another teams chance of success is not only insulting to the other teams work ethic but to the fan's team as well.
Beating someone who has no chance is to have accomplished little, beating someone who has no chance and still treating them as equals is something that only the best of us can do.
mike
It looks like the importance a teams out of conference schedule has just raised a lionesque head.
@AllTideUp You could just as easily have A&M play Alabama and Mizzu play Auburn on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That would certainly liven things up for those two teams and instead of just one game to sell the SEC would have two.
Come on Bama and Auburn, if y'all really want the SEC to do well you know what you have to do!
@John at MrSEC I understand the loyalty part, but I also understand looking at retirement from a year or two away. That extra $500,000 can easily get you $25,000 a year forever. Tax free. And it's a lot easier to put money away when you don't have to sweat paying your bills.
No, after taxes and expenses it won't be 500k but it will be close. JLS will be 64 in November and is a flesh and blood human being with real life needs, not some character in a TV show. Perhaps those of us whose lives are wrapped up in this soap-opera called football should take a step back every once in a while.
Fulmer?!?
I can appreciate that Phil needs to be seen as a viable candidate somewhere to resurrect his career but Please, not here.
An interim already on staff would be much less distracting and since the hard work in building the team has already been done the requirements for the HC position are well within the abilities of any number of the current staff. It's almost insulting to think that they would need a baby sitter.
His agent's attempt at a Jimmy Sexton is as close as Bo will ever get to the Arkansas job.
Arkansas has a good redshirt program going so one year of mediocre recruiting won't really hurt.
The Razorbacks also have a fine staff currently, both coaching wise and recruiting wise, so we also have the luxury of looking into the NFL ranks for and ex-head coach or a coordinator with head coaching experience.
They ought to go ahead and play @ WKU this year and get it out of the way, they won't be doing much else anyway.
Sabin and then Petrino and then Mullen were able to slide in under the old rules which made retooling their teams with players that fit their systems easier.
Now Dooley and Muschamp have come along and have had their choices of players somewhat more limited -although Muschamp being at UF and having a MUCH larger home recruiting base makes his name in this a bit of a moot point- and are having a harder time filling their rosters. I'd include Franklin and Phillips but UK and Vandy are so far behind in brand recognition for recruits that one more straw on a broken camel's back would be pointless.
Of course he's (Dooley) is going to B&M about limits, getting the train wreck that is Tennessee back on the tracks was going to be really hard anyway after the previous two head coaches much less with having 10-14% fewer tools to work with. It will be of no consolation to him but the playing field will be evened out for any head coaches that come after him.
I don't envy his job, but I'd sure take his money.
Has anybody asked them?
It could well be that they'd jump at the chance to have a shot at getting out of the cellar of their division. Not to dis them but in the West there are four teams that regularly beat them (even with Nutt at Arkansas the Razorbacks won more often than not), in the East they would have to get by Florida and Georgia. Let's face it, Tennessee is a train wreck that may take twenty years to recover and even then is unlikely to regain the form of the late 90's-early 2000's.
Having a better shot at Florida and Georgia players to go along with their current home recruiting base would be a benefit too.
Why is everyone making this so freaking hard?
Move Mississippi State to the East and Missouri to the West. They're both about the same caliber team year in and year out so the balance remains unaffected.
Have MSU play Ole MIss every year which would free up Kentucky and Vanderbilt and then let MU and A&M flip a coin to gets to pick between those two since they're the new guys.
Problem solved.
SO, how much money would you have to have to put up with tu?
I'm guessing that they'd have to put up about the same money as mac and bob get. ;)
Lateshift32 Yep, mu kicked our butts. I'm sure coach Herring (0-1 all time has a head coach) still wishes that houston nutt would have been fired just a little later so that he could have coached one more game.
John at MrSEC The only thing that worries Arkansas about tu is that they might somehow worm their way into the SEC.
If the BCS takes Notre Dame's sweetheart deal off the table it looks like all bets would be off with ND looking for a place to land. ND could not risk their strength of schedule depending upon how other teams fare alone. Due to the capricious nature of the strength of college football teams, ND risking their relevance in, and participation in, the national spotlight on their merits alone seems unlikely. A conference affiliation in either the B!G or the ACC would assure them a place.
Once ND comes into play the final act in this round of realignment begins.
It will be interesting to see if the big conferences are ready to set things in motion. We'll see if they throw ND overboard.*
* This would also help curtail teams like Texas, BYU, Boise State and so on from going independent and demanding/litigating for equal treatment and generally being a PITA.
