@mr_hanie Right.  Nonis messed this up.  He did nothing to build around Kessel.

@Mind Bomb @RememberSalming @Cameron19 @MaxwellHowe Don't understand you.  Right now, this is a disaster: a cap team at the bottom of the standings.  That is F failure.

@Top_Jimmy I am sure the fans can get on board that -- as long as the teardown and rebuild are not mindless.

@Cameron19 @Mind Bomb @MaxwellHowe It requires a team at the top, too.  All the scouts and the analytics team.  The days of the solo heroic GM are over!

@vinoa @RememberSalming @Cameron19 @MaxwellHowe Sure.  But this debacle has ripped away the veil.  This team is not good; it's very obvious now.  Game 7 gave them false hope.  That's all over.

@Burtonboy @RememberSalming @MaxwellHowe otherwise, a lot of this stuff is downright mysterious.  Looking back, Burke had all kinds of problems with the owners.  So he talked about 5 years, but couldn't do it.  Learn from failing.

@Cameron19 @MaxwellHowe indeed; failure by design.  Now let's watch him go to work.  I am totally behind the idea.

@Cameron19 @B_Leaf The Leafs basically subsidize the league & they are the most constrained in what they can do with their capital base.  It would be moronic for the league to go after this team.

@Burtonboy @RememberSalming @MaxwellHowe I always wondered why Shanny didn't start the process in the summer and dithered through this year.  But I guess he had to show the owners the futility of muddling through.  Now he has the green light; otherwise, he'd be fighting with the owners all the time.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming @Burtonboy I'm just saying it's not congenital to the 2nd line (for the 1st, they are who they are).  With the right wingers, Kadri could be a stud.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming @Burtonboy Not sure I would incriminate the 2nd line.  It's been too unstable, and Kadri is willing to dig (he's just not as strong on his blades).

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming @Burtonboy There's only one line that's really guilty of that.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming That's exaggerated.  If only.  The problem was they could win just enough to look plausible to coaches and managers who wanted to believe in their own decisions.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming @Burtonboy I agree that in the end, the overhaul is necessary.  I just want to see management make smart decisions based on the value a player has.  We can be emotional; I want management to be smart.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming Hm. I read the data telling us that the top line corsi improved.  That's an adjustment.  A turn around from a horrid baseline.  One wonders what would happen if the adjustment had time to complete itself.

@hockeyanalysis @Anthony Petrielli Bozak was getting equal opportunity punishment from all sides, actually.  The blindspot in the criticism was that he's cheap for a 1C.

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming I suspect they are having a hard time adjusting because that's the line that has to adjust the most.  They had horrible habits.

@Luke_R @Yaknowwhat But we were losing games on account of the top line getting locked into the zone.  Don't see that happening any more.  (Now, alas, we have found other ways to lose...)

My take aways from this essay are:

1. Some players are being used more -- Winnik and Panik; others less -- Clarkson and Komarov (though hard to say whether the injury is the problem here).  The preference is for players who carry play.

2.  Some players are being used differently.  That switch between Booth and Koma is really interesting.

Last: the defense is improved.
