@sniperstar @traNsplantEdneWfie @peterbleafs I agree with this assessment.  The Leafs did not build well around their assets, starting with Kessel.  They matched him with Bozak when B was barely in the league, and then got lazy and left them paired up.

@ushaped @RememberSalming The paradox is that Shanahan has a good demeanor.  But the rest is a circus.

He should NOT be handling the PR side; we need him to focus on other things.  The PR guys have to get a handle on the messaging.  Having proper curated media scrums after games is a starter.  Have someone moderate the questions.  If they are out of line, the moderator doesn't pick their questions at the next scrum.

But the frenzy has buried itself into the locker room now and means the players are not focusing on the coaching message.

@Everybody loves Kadri Public shaming's not a very effective test.  I am sorry it came down to this; if this was the last desperation move, than this reflects badly on the coaching staff.

@ushaped One thing Shanahan HAS to learn is the media game.  Esp in this new age.  Between the cap and social media, the 20th century is totally over.  I am not sure Steve Keough is up to the task of handling the PR, and someone's got to work with the players on the messaging barrage.  Everything is so much more visible nowadays.

@mcloki @RememberSalming @Burtonboy Ference should have been called.  No question.  But that's separate from the Kadri issue.  It was fast, but that's the point.  Kadri was flying, raised his elbow ....

Whether the refs give other teams a pass on shots against the Leafs, I couldn't tell.  But hit to the head have to face the music.

@Everybody loves Kadri Although it's working; just not sure it was intended this way.  And what toll is it taking on some of the guys?  Kadri's issues may be the price the team is paying for the circus.

@Everybody loves Kadri I don't think Shanahan doesn't know what he's doing.  But his managerial and coaching teams are a mess, and this has pervaded to on-ice team.

@Ze_theLeafsFan Low, I'd say.  The Oilers would have to go on a tear and the Leafs stay in the mud.  10 points separating with a dozen games left.  But who knows?  Been the craziest season....

@Waiting4LSC That word stuck out to me too.  It's bound to be the case when you have management/coaching personnel cobbled together from three regimes -- Burke, Nonis, and now Shanahan.

As always, many things to consider with Anthony's piece.  But one that surprises me is the point about Brennan, and whether playing him at the expense of the younger guys impedes their development.  With a dozen or so games left, and no decision pending on the younger guys, I think playing Brennan is what they should do.  Gardiner and Rielly need new coaches and a better atmosphere in the locker room.  I don't think they are developing in this stretch.  Although, you have to credit Rielly with some deep commitment to his game and this team.  So impressive.

But I'd play Brennan a ton and watch him closely.  I suspect they will let him go -- but they need to be sure.

@Anthony Petrielli @Yaknowwhat Carlyle did not see himself as a "developmental" coach; that is, teaching/mentoring younger guys.  If the team's full of capable veterans, that might work ok.  But in this cap era, you always need strong development.  The casualty above all was Kadri.

Those seasoned players he didn't like -- the ex-2nd line, he just drive out and pushed management to bring in his grinder types who just underwhelmed.

BTW: always enjoy your analyses.

@Yaknowwhat I agree; blaming Carlyle for everything is bad diagnostics.  And it's impossible to say whether Horachek is a good coach or not because so many other aspects of the team got unhinged.  It's true that under Carlyle, ie with continuity this year, the team would not be this atrocious.  BUT, they would not make the playoffs and the curve would not trend upwards.  Under Carlyle, the performance curve wobbled all over the place. But not upwards.

It was time to move on.  I just don't think management handled the change well.

@Xxxxxnew It's true that when the Sittler-Ballard thing cratered that the print media was all over it.  But for most of a season, it was just same old stuff.  It was not a frenzy. Also, I don't think Sittler for one ever felt he had an adversarial relationship with the media.  On the contrary.  But now, it's like a war that only benefits the reporters, so they are vested in sliming everyone.
