@wiski @RememberSalming @TMLfan_15 @Alec Brownscombe @Czarofleafnation One consolation is that things are so bad that management can't pretend band-aids will work.  Time to re-think.

@TMLfan_15 @Alec Brownscombe @Czarofleafnation I am not even sure it's the wrong mix as much as a compound of a few missing pieces (1C, a proper partner for Dion), some bad judgment in the GM, and a coach out of step.  Put them together and let things simmer, and this is what you get.

@Alec Brownscombe @Czarofleafnation You are right.  I was at the Devils game in NJ in the fall with some great seats.  Phil's always yakking it up.  It's what was so shocking about the John Scott incident.  Of all people to go after, Phil?

@Xxxxxnew leadership, leadership ....  All the more important since the lockout and the modern cap era.  You can't afford to make mistakes because there's no room to offload them any more.

@Xxxxxnew yup.  Toilet paper.  But it does go to show you what can happen when there's a positive leadership change once Ballard died in 90.

@Mitch_S2 @RememberSalming Yes, agree with that.  Everyone's hoarding 1st rounders.  There will be some jockeying at the draft for position, but that's it.

Santo goes, but for later picks and pieces.  He will be coveted, but I don't see the Rangers giving up a guy like Miller.  21 years old.  0.5 ppg.  He's good.  And a future.

This was also posted this AM, in case you missed it, on Clarkson and Elias.  Interesting backstory on what went on on the Devils bench in that shortened season before Clarkson was signed in July 13, in that fateful week of Nonis's legacy-making.

@Cameron19 @RememberSalming @MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat We don't disagree here, actually.  Hockey and Toronto are exceptions that prove the rule.  But what drives me nuts is the excuse that because the Leafs are the center of attention they can't escape the spiral.  That's just self-defeatism.

@Cameron19 @RememberSalming @MaxwellHowe @Yaknowwhat the point I am making is about the scrutiny -- and what role that plays in decision-making.  Yes, the businesses are different.  I have been saying that.  Lacrosse is different too.  The point is: is Toronto doomed because of its cultural ecosystem?  No.  Does the nature of the business mean that management has to be more strategic because there's less room for error?  Yes.

If anything the business side difference magnifies why our management has not been good on the cap, which is more severe in hockey.

4 days ago on Wednesday Mashup: Tank Battles of Ontario

Reply

@Yaknowwhat @RememberSalming True, the structures of the businesses are different.  I was referring more to the media craziness.  In fact the differences in the businesses are important, which is why management in hockey has to be much smarter than Nonis has been.  Even Burke to an extent.  You really have to manage the cap in hockey because of the way that Bettman extended the league and the lack of big $$$ TV contracts in the US after the strikes and lockouts.
