As much as Kyle Anderson is improving offensively, I think that he will always get beaten off the dribble defensively and be a defensive liability in that respect simply because he is not physically built to be otherwise. The best he can do is to learn some eye contact anticipation and a little foot work.

@imwithstupid Not to mention the recovery time for having been overseas. Pop has been vocal in so far as his concerns about motivation after a championship. Its the guys that haven't won a championship before that need to be shaken out of their complacency and get the reality check that it is a new season and that nothing from last year is relevant to what has to be done this year.

This guy has a a real disconnect with what pre-season basketball or any other sport is.
The Spurs don't begin to use something that resembles an actual rotation until near the end of pre-season and that's only if a player is 100% healthy.

After Danny Green and Cory Joseph, I thought that the best perimeter and transition defender that the Spurs took to Phoenix was JaMychal Green but he saw no playing time until garbage time. Aron Baynes may have been the one bright spot for the Spurs. Its understandable that not all Spurs can read the floor and make crisp unexpected passes but if you don't possess that talent, then your talent should be to be ready and able to receive those passes and do something with them. That's why I don't understand why the Spurs still have Ayres who seems to have neither talent.

Sarver is correct. I am disappointed that JaMychal Green and Bryce Cotton didn't get more minutes. I feel slighted.

Not too many teams that play at a faster pace than Phoenix. It could be a wake up call as to just who is a defensive perimeter liability amongst the young Spurs and wannabees. This game could be well suited to JaMychal Green.

As opponents go, I don't put nearly as much weight on last years performance as either of you. I still see 10 or so wild cards in the West and I'm not ready to count any of them out. Off season acquisitions may seem suttle on the surface but so have the Spurs acquisitions over the years not to mention another season of team chemistry and play execution.

Probably a good wake up call for the Spurs but definitely a big boost for this German franchise and international basketball in general. I think we all know that it wouldn't likely happen again very often but it DID happen and they will always have that memory.

@JohnAbney ...and it was the Spurs defense that hurt them in the first few years of perfecting their offense. The offensive learning curve is distracting to the defense until it is perfected and then comes the concentration on defense that the Spurs have finally mastered.....or at least it seems to me that that is the way it went. Bottom line, it takes a great deal of time to master both and come up with a balance.

It will take awhile for the rest of the League to catch up but the Spurs have changed the way the NBA game will be played in the future. With all the hoopla surrounding Cleveland players, I thought all along that the acquisition of David Blatt was the true fundamental change that took place and got lost in the Lebron James/Kevin Love hype.

It won't be surprising if Diaw tweaks something early on either. It could be a good opportunity to separate out the wheat from the chaff in the pre-season frontcourt bench.

Its a bit of a concern, no doubt. But when you go back to the seasons previous to his joining the Spurs, I don't think he was logging that many minutes after the Suns fell in love with Amare Stoudemire and he basically went dormant in Charlotte.

With Tony Parker's buy in to Asvel and and his recent nomination to president of the franchise, I would imagine Asvel is evolving into the equivalent of the Spurs D-League in Europe without Spurs acquisition. The Oklahoma City Thunder recently purchased a European team.

Playing for Asvel, a player gets better pay and more real world experience than playing in the American D-League. He might be better off remaining with Asvel until his game has developed to the point where he can come to the Spurs much in the fashion that Splitter did.

In my opinion, Corey Joseph is the only Spur that truly benefited from D-League experience but it was a different situation where he had a rookie contract and was only a college sophomore. Maybe Corey would be better than a 3rd string option had he been able to play in Europe.

Bottom line, its called the development league but seldom lives up to the name compared to playing in Europe.

Since Baynes is not yet signed and we are into the last 2 weeks before training camp, I would imagine that the Spurs are open to almost anything. Anytime front office business is still unfinished, they are still open to anything. Just a good way to manage. What their ideal goal for an outcome is remains a mystery.

@Steve1r09 @PaulGarciaPS

I don't understand your comment. The Spurs don't sign players to fill up the end of the bench or play "2-3" minutes a game. They sign these end of the bench players for insurance when key rotation players are out, having an off game etc and they need someone to step up and fill in without destroying team momentum and some times even to create or restore momentum. I don't underestimate the value and importance of anyone on the team as an asset from 1 to 15.

Nice to read that he influenced Asik's game. Maybe a brief vacation for Baynes and then dealing with his Spurs offer are in the making. It was difficult to see Australia, Argentina or France as being in the World Cup mix without key players on their rosters but you have to root for them as underdogs if its your home country. I don't see how any team but Spain is a threat to the USA but you can never tell in a 1-game elimination tournament.

Granted, Spain's frontcourt is awesome but Spain also has Rubio and France doesn't have Parker. Spain lucked out this summer with a full compliment rotation. Its definitely an off year for the French rotation just as it is for Argentina and Australia. Brazil seems to have all the pieces that they can assemble as a nation.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Does he simply want to be a free agent with a shot at a better contract with another European team? Is Baynes definitely not returning? If the buyout was initiated and it involves the NBA as the reason, then Baynes is either not returning or Lorbek is a chip in a Spurs trade. As far as I know, Lorbek has never shown any interest in the NBA and if he was coming to the NBA it seems that there would have already been a press leak before the buyout.

1. Durant can't repeat the minutes he played last season. Durant will have the thought of returning to his homeland playing in the back of his mind.

2. Pop has always said (and to Steve Kerr most recently) that seeding is not the number one priority. However in NBA basketball, every inch and every half step makes a difference between winning and losing and I say good seeding falls into the same category. But good seeding must be accompanied by momentum, chemistry and health coming together at the right moment. The number of factors to take into consideration to win the championship are immense.

3. We have no clue as to what teams that are ignored by the pundits will emerge as western conference threats and contenders. I say, just sit back and watch and hope that the Spurs are in the mix.

The Spurs would not be the Spurs with that restriction. It's part of their make up and identity. Decisions like the recent Manu Ginobili one were correct, justified and contractual for health reasons. Off season injuries are a risk each player and franchise must take and those injuries do not always occur in international play or even basketball for that matter.
