It wasn't but a few years ago that the Spurs had to choose amongst a glut of 6'-6" shooting guards and wings. Now Its a glut of tall skinny guys.

It won't be surprising if Diaw tweaks something early on either. It could be a good opportunity to separate out the wheat from the chaff in the pre-season frontcourt bench.

I don't get the "Rookie" comment. I guess they are referring to the fact that most Spurs rookies never really get a chance to crack the line up or end up overseas.

Financially it could mean lucrative endorsements but it would stall the development of his skills that could someday bring him a better NBA contract.

Its a bit of a concern, no doubt. But when you go back to the seasons previous to his joining the Spurs, I don't think he was logging that many minutes after the Suns fell in love with Amare Stoudemire and he basically went dormant in Charlotte.

Questionable defensive ability is an understatement. This probably just another standard workout for the free agents in the leftovers bucket. Well see if a new Michael Beasley can turn heads in a Spurs interview and workout.

With Tony Parker's buy in to Asvel and and his recent nomination to president of the franchise, I would imagine Asvel is evolving into the equivalent of the Spurs D-League in Europe without Spurs acquisition. The Oklahoma City Thunder recently purchased a European team.
Playing for Asvel, a player gets better pay and more real world experience than playing in the American D-League. He might be better off remaining with Asvel until his game has developed to the point where he can come to the Spurs much in the fashion that Splitter did.
In my opinion, Corey Joseph is the only Spur that truly benefited from D-League experience but it was a different situation where he had a rookie contract and was only a college sophomore. Maybe Corey would be better than a 3rd string option had he been able to play in Europe.
Bottom line, its called the development league but seldom lives up to the name compared to playing in Europe.
What do the Spurs need another guard, even in camp, for?

Since Baynes is not yet signed and we are into the last 2 weeks before training camp, I would imagine that the Spurs are open to almost anything. Anytime front office business is still unfinished, they are still open to anything. Just a good way to manage. What their ideal goal for an outcome is remains a mystery.

That's the first time I have ever heard "Tiago" and "shot" mentioned in the same sentence. It sounds very strange. Must be a reference to that ugly hook thing he does. Get some rest Tiago.

I don't understand your comment. The Spurs don't sign players to fill up the end of the bench or play "2-3" minutes a game. They sign these end of the bench players for insurance when key rotation players are out, having an off game etc and they need someone to step up and fill in without destroying team momentum and some times even to create or restore momentum. I don't underestimate the value and importance of anyone on the team as an asset from 1 to 15.

Nice to read that he influenced Asik's game. Maybe a brief vacation for Baynes and then dealing with his Spurs offer are in the making. It was difficult to see Australia, Argentina or France as being in the World Cup mix without key players on their rosters but you have to root for them as underdogs if its your home country. I don't see how any team but Spain is a threat to the USA but you can never tell in a 1-game elimination tournament.
Granted, Spain's frontcourt is awesome but Spain also has Rubio and France doesn't have Parker. Spain lucked out this summer with a full compliment rotation. Its definitely an off year for the French rotation just as it is for Argentina and Australia. Brazil seems to have all the pieces that they can assemble as a nation.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Does he simply want to be a free agent with a shot at a better contract with another European team? Is Baynes definitely not returning? If the buyout was initiated and it involves the NBA as the reason, then Baynes is either not returning or Lorbek is a chip in a Spurs trade. As far as I know, Lorbek has never shown any interest in the NBA and if he was coming to the NBA it seems that there would have already been a press leak before the buyout.

This is getting weird. Its almost like the Spurs are retooling the Toros. There can't possibly be a place for him with the Spurs.

The Spurs championship victory with so many foreign players has seemed to spark global interest in the Spurs. This could be huge financially in the long run for a small market franchise.

It sounds like a tip from Kawhi while he is summering and working out in San Diego that this guy is at least worth a training camp shot. If that's the case, I like the camp invite. With Bryce Cotton and JaMychal Green included, this could be an interesting camp. If nothing else, Josh Davis might make the Toros which may be better than his current future.
Its exhibition basketball. No scouts are paying attention yet. Teams are still experimenting. Baynes will have his opportunity to force the Spurs' hand if he plays well in the tournament.

How do we know what the Spurs are willing to give? They put an offer on the table and said that they would look to match any reasonable offer. We just don't know what "reasonable" is to the Spurs.

1. Durant can't repeat the minutes he played last season. Durant will have the thought of returning to his homeland playing in the back of his mind.
2. Pop has always said (and to Steve Kerr most recently) that seeding is not the number one priority. However in NBA basketball, every inch and every half step makes a difference between winning and losing and I say good seeding falls into the same category. But good seeding must be accompanied by momentum, chemistry and health coming together at the right moment. The number of factors to take into consideration to win the championship are immense.
3. We have no clue as to what teams that are ignored by the pundits will emerge as western conference threats and contenders. I say, just sit back and watch and hope that the Spurs are in the mix.

I like the energy that Anderson is channeling against the doubters as well as that fact the he comes from a coaching family. It will be interesting to see how he comes to camp. I"m sure the Spurs have already given him a summer regimen routine and I'm hoping for a Patty Mills-like transformation without the torn rotator cuff.

The Spurs would not be the Spurs with that restriction. It's part of their make up and identity. Decisions like the recent Manu Ginobili one were correct, justified and contractual for health reasons. Off season injuries are a risk each player and franchise must take and those injuries do not always occur in international play or even basketball for that matter.

Its good to see Kawhi taking his unusual but gifted anatomy with a light heart. I recall years ago when Kareem Abdul Jabaar was being interviewed, a reporter asked "What is the air like up there?" Kareem spit on his head.

Don't be blinded by the sensational press who are infatuated with stars. There are plenty of teams in the infancy of a team concept. Dallas, Portland, Phoenix, Atlanta, Memphis, Boston, Toronto and Philadelphia, to name a few and Cleveland may follow suit with their new coaching philosophy.

After all of these years of free agency periods, hasn't it yet become clear that when multiple teams are interested in a free agent that it is the kiss of death for him to ever come to the Spurs?

49.6 percent from the field makes him almost interesting but what does he do on defense? Could the Spurs Summer League roster be composed entirely of forwards and point guards? I'm not complaining. I just find it interesting that the team is primarily composed of these 2 elements and Diaw, Mills, Bonner and Baynes have not yet signed.
I assume "Mexico State Lobos" is just a brain fart. I'm guessing that these wing players are practice fodder to give Kyle Anderson a defensive challenge in practice.

Of course he does but I'm not going to rank them in any special order. Each contributed to NBA history in their own way. If I was to compare him to another great coach, I would have to go with Auerbach for their team execution approach. However in many ways they are still not alike. Riley and Jackson I would say were crafty in their management of star talent. Whatever floats your boat and whatever team you like. My all time favorite is Pop but that's just me and I don't care who doesn't agree because that's who it is for me.

The Mavs did not acquire Chandler to contend against any specific team. They did so to contend against all NBA teams. Teams don't trade simply to match up against one specific team. It doesn't work that way. No one can predict that any specific team will face another specific team in the playoffs.

The Spurs will do the same thing they usually do. They will take the best player still available regardless of what position he can play or if he is ready to play in the NBA any time soon.
Nice article Jose. All season long Diaw's name was mentioned in almost every Spurs trade scenario that outsiders could dream up. This aggravated me to no end as I saw him as Pop's unheralded essential cog in the system.

Kevin Love doesn't want to be a Spur. Where did you pull that from? Love has made it publicly clear that he wants to play in a big market. Love addresses the question of what it might take to win a championship and his light-hearted answer in jest was to join the Spurs.
@jojo707 It's a New York newspaper throwing out the numbers for Diaw and it's total BS. They have no clue how much Diaw will negotiate. They did the same thing last week in regards to Patty Mills.
