Why would Gasol leave the Grizz? Their team is finally coming together. Its the perfect time to stay in Memphis.

When he was sent to Austin, I didn't comment because I didn't know why but it seems that there were a plethora of experts here who knew and since they were talking like experts with inside info, I didn't question their comments. Is it safe to say now that the Spurs sent him to Austin to get him warmed up?

I would imagine any Spurs interest at this point would be as insurance if a guard goes down by trade deadline. Allen's defense has slowed to a crawl. As to Daye, I agree with your opinion, he has not made the most of this opportunity. Also he camps out on the perimeter on offense and does very little movement without the ball. Would the Spurs replace Daye with Allen? I doubt it. Allen is likely a possible option if a guard goes down. Could Daye possibly be replaced with a forward? Maybe.

I like the Cory Joseph stat but anything they did against a depleted OKC team isn't saying much.

I'll be looking for 3 things:

Belinelli to find his groove and give the other guards some much needed rest.

Cory Joseph to continue his progress.

The bigs not named Duncan, Diaw or Splitter to continue to get game experience and improve.

R C goes after every worthwhile free agent. So does every GM. If you post every Spurs acquisition rumor between now and the summer deadline you will have lots to write about and nothing worth reading.

The Tim Duncan stat is interesting but no way Pop keeps him on the court for 20 points with a back to back.

I AM impressed. This guy plays both ends and skies like Kawhi. Very impressive defense with an outside shot to boot.

Best performance I can remember from Cory Joseph. The fact that he is finally racking up assists is the tale of the tape as far as his ability to run the offense.

If Tiago Splitter's disc condition turns out to be one that never can be fixed or rehabbed, then there are big problems for the Spurs.

Five things to watch:

Splitter doesn't have a permanent back injury leading to calf tightness.

Cory Joseph begins to get assists as the offensive comes together.

Aron Baynes learns from his mistakes on offense and defense.

Kawhi  finds his game.

Someone comes off the bench subbing for Kawhi and has better than a D-League game.

Good defense, shots didn't go down, offense was out of sync. All the early things I'd expect from a depleted Spurs team. It should slowly improve.

The Splitter situation is not good, Doctors are puzzled by the pain he gets in his calf and are contemplating whether it is back-related and not actually something to do with his calf.

The bad news is that he is injured. The good news is that it is early in the season , has time to recover and shows signs of a greater commitment to defense.

Of those 5 mentioned, only the 3 point shooting interests me. The Spurs will have to defend the perimeter. The rest are an historical accumulation of past facts that aren't relevant to the task at hand. More so, I will be observing Kawhi and Tiago's integration back into the rotation and how it affects them and the performance of their teammates on the floor with them. Also I will be looking (hoping) for smarter defense from everyone as Coach Bud trains his players to take advantage of defensive lapses just as Pop trains the Spurs.

Bulls, Jazz, Cavs and Celtics all passed him off. I don't know if that's a good or bad thing. He shoots with both hands, blocks shots and makes passes in the Summer League video and he hits from the outside. I wonder what's wrong with his game.

Whether or not teams make decisions as to pre-season matchups still is not an argument. The same risks apply with no guarantees and if this was his concern, then he should have checked the Spurs schedule leading up to the game before pulling the trigger.

The old Red Aurerbach Celtics players understand full well what the Spurs are doing as they were so similar. I would imagine, that just like advice from the Iceman to the current Spurs, Rondo is hearing it from the old guard Celtics in Boston and paying attention.

I don't have any problem with Barkley's pick. He hates doing it and only does it because it is part of his job to do so. He knows that he is not good at predictions. He does state that its only on paper and even Charles knows that what's on paper doesn't always prove out.

Great and surprising win under any circumstances and chalk 1 not-so-important-win to the Spurs system no matter what players suit up. Its an up event in a long 82 game roller coaster ride. Great way to start the season and it got Manu back on track. I enjoyed watching Cuban's face when TNT panned in on him. A Parsons max contract is still ??????? until proven otherwise and Kawhi wasn't even dressed to challenge him.

One has to trust that Pop made an educated choice. It may have been his plan all along and he just wanted to motivate the end of his bench (all with contracts already) to improve. I think JaMychal Green's game has improved to the point where he might get signed somewhere better than the Austin Spurs.
The roster is set. Now comes adjusting to altered rotations due to injury and new twists on plays that Messina introduces as already mentioned by Pop.

Unless the Spurs intend to test and waive more players by October 28. Either way, I'm sad to see JaMychal Green go as he was a spark plug and without Patty Mills and with Manu too far into his final seasons, the Spurs have no spark plug until Patty returns.

So what are these? 10 day contracts until Kawhi and Tiago return or are the Spurs not satisfied or convinced with the end of their bench?
Either way it is an interesting event. How can these 2 be signed unless the Spurs intend to cut back to 13?

I guess they are hanging on to JaMychal Green for the Houston game with Kawhi out. It will be a shame when he goes. He was the Spurs spark plug off the bench with Patty Mills out and Manu in no condition to repeat his old role.

It was a refreshing poll. Intelligent questions and intelligent answers. I guess the only big surprise was that none picked Dallas as a threat in the SW division but 3% picked Houston. No fan is going to agree 100% with all of it but overall it wasn't half bad.

As much as Kyle Anderson is improving offensively, I think that he will always get beaten off the dribble defensively and be a defensive liability in that respect simply because he is not physically built to be otherwise. The best he can do is to learn some eye contact anticipation and a little foot work.

@imwithstupid Not to mention the recovery time for having been overseas. Pop has been vocal in so far as his concerns about motivation after a championship. Its the guys that haven't won a championship before that need to be shaken out of their complacency and get the reality check that it is a new season and that nothing from last year is relevant to what has to be done this year.

This guy has a a real disconnect with what pre-season basketball or any other sport is.
The Spurs don't begin to use something that resembles an actual rotation until near the end of pre-season and that's only if a player is 100% healthy.

After Danny Green and Cory Joseph, I thought that the best perimeter and transition defender that the Spurs took to Phoenix was JaMychal Green but he saw no playing time until garbage time. Aron Baynes may have been the one bright spot for the Spurs. Its understandable that not all Spurs can read the floor and make crisp unexpected passes but if you don't possess that talent, then your talent should be to be ready and able to receive those passes and do something with them. That's why I don't understand why the Spurs still have Ayres who seems to have neither talent.

Not too many teams that play at a faster pace than Phoenix. It could be a wake up call as to just who is a defensive perimeter liability amongst the young Spurs and wannabees. This game could be well suited to JaMychal Green.

As opponents go, I don't put nearly as much weight on last years performance as either of you. I still see 10 or so wild cards in the West and I'm not ready to count any of them out. Off season acquisitions may seem suttle on the surface but so have the Spurs acquisitions over the years not to mention another season of team chemistry and play execution.

@JohnAbney ...and it was the Spurs defense that hurt them in the first few years of perfecting their offense. The offensive learning curve is distracting to the defense until it is perfected and then comes the concentration on defense that the Spurs have finally mastered.....or at least it seems to me that that is the way it went. Bottom line, it takes a great deal of time to master both and come up with a balance.

It will take awhile for the rest of the League to catch up but the Spurs have changed the way the NBA game will be played in the future. With all the hoopla surrounding Cleveland players, I thought all along that the acquisition of David Blatt was the true fundamental change that took place and got lost in the Lebron James/Kevin Love hype.
