Pat; thanks for all the great posts, and I'd encourage you to never give up the fight. I'd say that you and Tim from Pp are the only positive bloggers and had the foresight to see what was being planned 2-3 seasons ago. Keep up the good work so you can relish in a WS victory soon !

@NateRose I agree that there are a LOT of good points in your post, and Thanks for the time put in.  And I would agree with you 100%, if Stanton looked like he can stay healthy and give the Bucs a full season for the next 3 years.  But I really don't see that happening; hasn't yet.

@Eephus Cold ?  I thought Pittsburghers were tough ?  All kidding aside, I truly believe the Bucs play better in front of a crowded PNC Park.  But last season I made the 2600 mile trip in September to watch them host the Brewers when they were still officially in the playoff hunt, and there were like 10K fans in attendance.  I was shocked and really disappointed.

Hopefully this game gives the team a shot of confidence that they can carry through the rest of the season.  Now we just need to have some fans actually go to the game !  Disappointing to see games against the Brewers and there's like 6,000 people in the stands.  This team deserves better.

the two scenarios really can't be compared because of the huge disparity in money.  Sanchez will likely be viewed in the future as a steal for the Pirates, draft pick notwithstanding.  Lohse will have to pitch better than he ever has, which is highly unlikely, to make both the draft pick and huge dollars make sense.

1 year, 7 months ago on Why did the Pirates trade a draft pick for Gaby Sanchez, but not give one up for Kyle Lohse?

Morton's biggest problem: he tips his pitches big time

To be enthralled with "missing bats" is to forget (or never know) the great phrase by Sandy Koufax:  "I became a good pitcher when I stopped trying to make them miss the ball and started trying to make them hit it."

All of the best pitchers have figured this out.

You can absolutely go ahead and say what you're not sayin.  Having said that, hopefully as the Bucs get more respect and recognition, maybe they'll start to get the reverse treatment.

@wkkortas I believe the compensation lottery picks are the only ones that are tradeable; and that was part of the new CBA

IMO Marte should be brought up ONLY when it's clear he's ready.  NOT because the Bucs have a need in the outfield.  Marte still needs to work on plate discipline and learning how to not chase the junk out of the zone, and he'll not likely learn that in the bigs.  In the big picture,we have to look at him as a potnetial superstar, and evrything the Bucs do should be geared towards grooming him for that; not "filling a need short term" .

Now if he had a big time OPS and was dominating triple A ?  Call him up right now.  But that ain't happening.  Yet.

@wkkortas would you agree that if the Bucs were in last place and had a farm system void of talent, Appel would have a much stronger bargaining position ?

@jpbucco true; but it's reportedly a stronger draft pool next year; hence the 'better' pick.  But one never knows, do one ?

With the Bucs surging and several prospects making positive strides, Appel's relative value to Pittsburgh diminishes in my opinion.  I'd be fine with passing on him and getting a better pick next year instead.  The way he & Boras handled draft day further enhances that feeling.

not to mention the Bucs have the 7th best record in baseball, and if the play-offs started today........

I'll be really interested to see how Tabata responds to this.  His behavior is tough to figure out, and I hope it's just immaturity and that this gives him some reason to grow up a bit.

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the smug Cardinal radio guys get a dose of humble pie from the Bucs.  By Sunday, they were almost showing respect to Pittsburgh.

Well, so far this year Pedro's looking like Rod Carew compared to Joey Bats.  Plus, I still believe that Bautista's a failed test away from a long suspension.
