@10Vol85 Good stats. This shows why the Big 10/PAC want Conference Champs vs. top ranked teams. I hadn't realized how poorly those conferences had performed under the current BCS system. Wow.
Note that the PAC Commissioner made this comment --- not the Big 10 Commissioner. We already know the Big 10 can't compete in the Rose Bowl as it is too hot out in California!
@John at MrSEC No no no -- I wasn't referring to you as saying Mizzou had regrets. I was referring to the KC writer noted in your article. Sorry for the confusion.
Well, hindsight is 20/20 most of the time. Even in hindsight, why would Mizzou want to still be in the Big 12 --- because of Kansas? Sorry, that is not near enough. The Big 12 may now be rich and stable (all because of Missouri as you note). The move to the SEC is a big opportunity for Mizzou to upgrade its programs and get to the next level. That would not have happened with the Big 12 status quo. This is one person who has absolutely no regrets about our move --- even with 20/20 hindsight.
I understand that trying to save the ACC is the idea by giving them some additional credibility. However, I for one would love to see Mizzou/Kansas and Texas/A&M back on the schedule. Looks to me like the ACC needs a richer TV contract to save their league. I assume having an SEC opponent at their home games would help in getting more TV money?
Notre Dame gets a huge amount of respect in these discussions. Its like Notre Danme is a power conference all by themselves. The Big 4 plus Notre Dame.
Please excuse my ignorance, but what is it that makes Notre Dame so powerful? --- Its own TV deal with NBC, its huge alumni base, something else? Notre Dame hasn;t exactly been a football powerhouse lately. I can only guess that its alumni base and fan following make it a national draw for TV and that is why its such a coveted program
Wowsa. I think its a great move by the SEC. I suggest St. Louis as the site for the new bowl game! (just kidding -- I read the whole article).
Seriously, this is a smart and essential move to not only block the Big 10/PAC alliance but to trump it in that (as you note) the SEC/Big 12 are much much stronger conferences than the Big 10/PAC 12. The next step is an annual game between SEC and Big 12 teams similar to the Big 10/PAC. This will get the Missouri/Kansas game back and it will be just as nasty as before.
The ACC is dead in the water in football. My prediction - Florida State, Georgia State, Clemson, Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech will bolt to the SEC/Big 12 (not sure which Conference gets which school). Then, Notre Dame goes to the Big 10.
Thsi is fun stuff.
The Big 10 continually moans and growns and makes excuses. Just because they live in dreary, cloudy and cold places doesn't mean we have to hear about it! Its a choice.
Not a suprise decision to me. The ACC is relatively weak in football. Th echances of that league landing 2 teams in the Top 4 are nil. So, their best chance to participate is the Conference Champion scenario. The SEC's last chance is to get the Big 12 on board here. The BIG 12 MAY still have enough self-confidence and pride to go with the Top 4 teams vs. Conference Champions. It is clear the Big 10 and PAC have thrown in the towel of ever being the best Conference again.
Well, I would have to disagree. Arkansas was 11-2 last year (only losses were to Alabama and LSU). I find it quite hard to believe that in 2011 anyone would really say Arkansas was 4th in the SEC. In 2010, Arkansas was 10-3. That is what I meant by upper tier and, to be honest, I would be quite thrilled if Missouri got to that level in the SEC. It is much much better than also-ran.
Careful on high expectations right away -- its a good way to be disappointed even if Mizzou does well.
I give Missouri and its Board loads of credit for having the guts to make the move to the SEC. It was a bold and gutsy move - even considering the increased money we are expected to make in the SEC vs. Big 12. Just think of the risk the Board made in moving away from the Conference Missouri had been in forever, the rivalry with Kansas, the possibility of being beat up in a very very strong Conference and the money that will need to be raised to upgrade facilities and budgets to be competitive.
However, in my mind, this is the exact challenge and change the school needs at this point. It will make Missouri better and quite possibly move us to the upper tier like Arkansas.
If Franklin isn't 100% ready for the Georgia game -- well, I don't even want to think about it.
If FSU goes to the Big 12, then it seems to me the SEC and Big 12 would have much in common to band together and vote to block the Conference Champions only scenario. The Big 12 would be clearly the 2nd strongest football conference and would have an excellent chance to have 2 teams ranked in the top 4. This would put the Big 10 even further behind and Delaney would need Notre Dame really bad.
Dictionaries are online and free. Not only did Stigma "not quite fit" it was exactly the opposite of what he meant. Too funny.
OK, did the Coach really say "the caliber of players that are in the SEC and the STIGMA of playing in the league has really, really benefited us"? The dictionary defines Stigma as --- "a mark of disgrace or imfamy, a stain or reproach, as on one's reputation". Just a joke. He simply used the wrong word .. but I found it funny.
Sweet. Looks like Coach Pinkel and staff have been working hard. I know its impossible to really know, but I wonder how this chart would look for Mizzou if we were still in the Big 12? Not nearly as good I would guess.
Delaney is a whinner. He knows the SEC is the superior league and that is why he has consistently beat his drum on Conference winners. He wants to push the point that "all Conferences are equal" --- so the winner of the Big 10 is automatically better than any SEC team who doesn't win their Conference. He knows that is BS but its his only option. Just look at the recent bowls --- SEC vs. Big 10 --- the SEC went 3-1. The best from the SEC pretty much dominated the best from the Big 10. That's the real story -- not all the Conference Champion's talk.
If that clause exists, it can be eliminated in any renegotiation of a new or expanded deal. Its all part of the overall negotiation on how much of the HUGE $$$ pie is shared between ESPN and the Conferences.
@Sooner_Stampede OK. If not the ACC then someone. Otherwise, I am concerned the BIG10/PAC will dominate the discussions (like they already are in the media) and push through their agenda at the expense of the SEC. This process is now 100% political vs. on the field. You cannot win political battles by yourself.
