I think it is important for muslims as well as non-muslims to understand the verse that allows "striking" of the wife. The prophet s.a.s. explained that when striking a wife or a child one must not leave a mark nor should one hit the person in the face. The prophet Job pbuh when he was in the midst of his suffering was told by his wife: curse God and die. He vowed that when he was healed he would beat her for these words. When he was healed he remembered his vow but felt uneasy about it. How could he injure his beloved wife. God told Job to take a handful of grass and strike his wife with it to fulfill his vow. This is proof from the Qur'an that domestic violence is not advocated by Allah. The command to strike the wife is not to abuse her but to show extreme displeasure with her actions. Also the command to discipline the wife is not to be used because the food is too cold or the children are too noisy. A wife is only disciplined by her husband when she does something large like sleeping with another man or breaking family bonds. Unfortunately this verse has been misunderstood by both muslims and non-muslims alike.
