I could handle losing Step, Boyle, Klein, McD and Malone...but now you too?!  We might as well pack up the bus boys.  2014/15 is not looking like our year.   My only hope is that after some time off in Vancouver to clear your head, you'll come back to the home you built.  Either that, or become a guest blogger on the Lightning blog as they run the the SCF in the spring!  Bad Jokes aside, you should be very proud of what you've created here.

@KevinTheNYRBlog i actually enjoyed it.  had me reading up on shot distance stats and zone entry data....but just as an exercise ..could you write tomorrows article in the voice of tommy wiseau?!  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=if5eP3crl_4

"A similar caution applies to any new statistic, especially one that’s supposed to evaluate or rank players or teams in some dimension. If your new stat is trying to estimate something that can be measured, show how well it does that, especially compared to any other stats that are out there. And if it’s trying to estimate something ethereal, like “consistency” or “durability,” something that doesn’t have a real definition, how do you know that you’re measuring it the best way possible? There’s nothing wrong with a statistic like that — Bill James has “speed score,” which estimates the fuzzy notion of a player’s “baseball speed” — but be aware that those kinds of things are rough tools, not strong empirical findings."

So your goal is for me to qualify my initial statement as hyperbole? Lol ok. As I wrote in response to your thesis last week my issue with fenwick and corsi are they track a lines Performance as absolutes! offensive/defensive zone possesion and shot rate pro and con. The major pitfall? THEY FAIL TO ACCOUNT FOR RELATIVITY. If nash-msl-duclair dominate corsi... it could easily be argued that is more a function of good coaching than good performance. If a team has a high fenwick and corsi... to me anyway... that's more indicative of a coach knowing how to position his personal for success that the players themselves being successful. I.e. if av is always able to get the nash line up against the other teams 3 and 4.... and they post a big time corsi... is that because they performed well? Yes...but... shouldn't your 1st line outperform a 4th? Ergo... our 4th line posting an even score lining up in the defensive zone against the other teams top line would be more impressive than our 1st line constantly outperforming the other teams 4th....for example...if you run between the tackles on 3rd and 20 when the other team is nickle and average 10 yards per carry... and you run between the tackles on 3rd and 2 when the other team stacks 8 in the box and gain 3.... you'd have to agree the 3 yard run is far more impressive--and more indicative of success--than the 20 yard run... which runs counter to the math. Now I'm sure you know I'm aware of quality of competition statistics. I'm also aware it is a tertiary statistic and doesn't--and cannot--take into account game by game variables. For example, playing against the zack Parise line is NOT the same from when the game started as it was after he returned with 18 stitches in his lip. There are injuries to account for there are streaky hot and cold streaks. What would you consider the hockey version of ops+? What's the version of WAR? Linear weights. Extrapolated runs. Run expectancy. Some perspective I'd like you to consider " "There’s a sabermetric adage: Just because a statistic has Babe Ruth on top and Mario Mendoza on the bottom, that doesn’t mean it’s accurately measuring what it’s supposed to measure."

Has nothing to do with naivete. I've gone into this in GREAT detail in posts past. The analytics that are prevalent in this sport are inherently flawed. They don't factor in level of competition. Quality of chances. Conversion rate. Among many others. I'm not suggesting they dismissed outright, but they are certainly nowhere near as comprehensive or predictive as they are in other sports.

goes to show how much bullshit corsi is. nash was shooting floaters from 30 feet...and his corsi was getting rewarded for it! now he's fighting to get to the tough areas of the ice--which means sometimes hes going to get dispossesed--and his corsi has taken a beating for it...but hes got 9 goals! lol now the stats say there is ZEROOOOOOOOOOOOO chance he keeps up a 30% scoring clip. But fancy stats for the sake of fancy stats is nonsense. As i've said before I work with fancy stats everyday. I'm sure many of you do, its simple cost-benefit analysis and ROI algorithms applied to athletes instead of assets. Hockey nerds will certainly figure it out soon, but right now, their go-to quants are far too subjective in nature.

@McPhee37 whats odd about you is youre a dinosaur... but...you know it!!  the  game has changed...and you simultaneously  admit it... yet you rail against said changes.   you're exceedingly likable...yet hopelessly outdated.  you are an antique mcphee. something easily admired...yet easily forgotten. unfortunately your brand of hockey is a footnote.

hags is such a good defenseive/change of pace guy to me it makes total sense to have him on the 4 flipping the defensive and offensive zones with one breakout.  I think him on the second, even third lines is square peg round hole. he tries to do too much imo

Av played in the bigs... understands shit happens. Realizes how hard the game is at that level. Approaches things from a players perspective. Torts is eternally bitter his size didn't allow him a chance to play in the bigs. Thinks anyone that doesn't perform at optimal at all times is a pussy or an asshole for not capitalizing on the opportunity he never got. Like all of us..my their experiences shape their world view.

And for whar its worth...I work in a sabrmetric world and believe WHOLEHEARTEDLY in "fancy stats"... especially vis-a-vis asset allocation in team development... HOWEVER...no matter how hard we try it is impossible to quantify the human effect of PRESENCE. A 500ft homerun. A 2 out, 2 strike rbi double...more apropos 98mph chin music...the fancy stats say theyre all overrated and imact is simply perception predicated on human emotion ... I say ask the A's if they want the cespedes trade over--which every algorithm said they won outright--but, as cliche as it is....they have yet to figure an algorithm for heart.... for confidence..the numbers say messier won all those cups bc he's 2nd all-time in points...well... we all watched him... and while he scored a point a game... he was worth 3. Hard to quantify moose's presence. ... sorry I followed up your 10000 word article with a 5000 word response. I'm a hypocrite indeed!!

Adam Hermans downfall is that he writes so that we can all see how smart Adam herman is...his premise is secondary. Please. You're undoubtedly a brilliant kid and I hope the Rangers quant department recognizes your talent and picks you up! Honest to god I do! But until then...please please PLEASE keep your BLOG posts to under 10,000 words. Please. We love you. Keep up the good work... only abridged.

My thoughts...we lost A TON of veteran leadership this off season. Not just vet leadership, but familiarity too. Guys have been with boyle and stralman and Ritchie for YEARS. I think the "young" guys... McD, Zucc, ck, j moore, klein... they've all been asked to do more than they've ever been asked to do. To be more than they've ever been asked to be. ID like to have boyle, pouliot and stralman back... but we are asshole fans... passionate. But assholes. And thats why can't have nice things... lol
