Vandy fans are euphoric right now with the Baseball team play for a National Title, and any thing Corbin does is Gold. Most understand why Franklin left, but are only upset at the recruiting class that was destroyed. We don't have a normal SEC fanbase in the sense that our "crazy" fans accept that Franklin left and moved on.

I am one Vandy fan that hopes nothing is found. It is still an embarrassment to the University and fanbase that this horrible crime happened. I cheer for Vandy because they never had this take place before. A cover up would make things worse, and drag Vandy down to the level of the rest of the SEC with a win at all costs mentality. Franklin lied and left and poached recruits that he recruited on Vandy's dime. Then Vandy had to take lesser talented players to fill out it's class. Yet I wish Franklin no ill will in this, and think he will be cleared.

@HoustonVol  I agree with you. Historically most of the SEC West teams except LSU/Ark do not care about hoops and never have. Ole Miss once "promoted" it's head Basketball coach to Assistant football coach. That should not be a reason to punish the fans that does care. I would rather see UT/UK twice over A&M/UT twice. This is the dumbest thing the SEC has ever done.

@John at MrSEC @vandyfan1  After UTK used every rule to get this massive class, is it possible that the rules are changed to prevent the type of back and forward counting and then there is a hard cap of 25 soon (which I would love to have)? Just asking for your opinion on this. Unless the rules are changed, I don't believe for one minute that UT won't pull the same thing next year and the next.  Not intending to upset or contradict you with that comment but it's pretty clear to me that Jones and most coaches does not care about honoring the soft cap, and would try to have a class of 40+ every year.

Also Vandy's history is to honor rules and agreements (which is why they have never been on the NCAA's infraction committees radar). So for them to sign a class of 35 plus would not have happened IMO. To me it's just better to add to your practice squad with players that you wanted than to depend on walk-ons or risk injuring a starter. 2 star kids are not as worthless as most believe,

Good article my fear was that Mason would just add bodies. Getting Lealao was huge (before anyone states that Vandy pulled a "Franklin" on Stanford) he did not pass his entrance test to Stanford. Yes this is an awful and pathetic class, but to not use those scholarships and hold them to next year would not be logical. If they would have only signed 10 kids then thats 13 lost scholarships. After UT bent every rule in to book to get a class of 36, the rules may change to prevent that from happening again. The SEC may actually start enforcing the 25 man cap. Get who you can into your system and coach them up instead of not having anyone on you practice squad. Also excuse some of the comments from us because Signing day is always a depressing day for Vandy fans as we usually end up with the worst class in the SEC.

Vandy may be dead tourney wise but with only 7 scholarship players, Stallings deserves credit for even having this team at .500. So far  this is his best coaching job.

Who was out there? The only names I heard were Mack Brown he is retired/too old. Also he has a Vandy past that makes him an unlikely candidate. This website suggested  Schaino but he was just fired and is not on anyone's radar. Hudspeth was the only serious name out there.  No BCS level coach would consider Vandy a step up. Who was out there in the other levels to consider? Get someone from FCS or D2  then everyone will say "same old Vandy" and that no one wanted the job. Mason was the best name on everyone's list.  I am not criticizing this site but this article makes Vandy look like they failed by hiring one the hottest name in coaching.

@sojourner FYI: Vandy is a helluva lot more than it's football program.

Also only 2 or 3 kids followed Kiffin to USC Franklin is trying to move the entire class to Penn St., plus Kiffin didn't sell himself he sold TN also

The fact that Vandy has no recruiting class this season also hampers them in their coaching search. But that should leave several scholarships for next season since no one pays attention to the 25 man limit anyway Vandy could sign 40 kids in 2015.

9 months, 2 weeks ago on Reports Suggest Vandy’s Williams Searching High And Low For New Coach

Someone needs to point out that when he visited these kids and built those relationships he was employed by Vanderbilt. Vandy was paying for the trip, paying him to recruit them to Vanderbilt, and that he has a class of recruits waiting for him at Penn St. Also he should not be discouraging players he is not targeting from decommitting to Vandy.

9 months, 2 weeks ago on Franklin Defends His Decision To Swing Vandy Commits To Penn State

@the_voice @vandyfan1  I just don't see it!! The past team was very Senior laden, and the returning players have very little experience. This is a team that was going to fall which is part of the reason JF left. he knew that this team was not going to be very good. Also this team has had 20+ kids de-commit this weekend, and Penn St only has 4 open scholarships and 2 were just taken by former Vandy recruits. No coach is going to want a class of less than 10 in his 1st recruiting class which will be ranked 100+ even if he was here to stay people will instantly claim he can't recruit.  Most of the Frustration with Franklin was he clearly was trying to flip players to Penn St. while under contract with Vandy. That action caused most of them to leave even when there was no room for them at PSU (which is under NCAA sanctions). The writer at Vandysports is the recruiting writer for Vandy and he literally watched a top 20 class disintegrate into nothing. Right now Vandy only has 3 players committed to them (think about that for one minute) Yes they will sign 20 plus kids but most of them will be Sun-Belt level players at best. Of the three remaining one's only other FBS offer besides Vandy was UAB. Everyone else in the SEC is signing NFL players and Vandy is signing High School players. The incoming coach has no chance. Kiffin left a top ten class at UT and everyone hated him for poaching 3 or 4 kids when he left, Franklin can't even sign some of these players yet has turned them against Vandy. It seems he has a vendetta against a school he was working for just last week

Schiano probably removed his name from any consideration early, Vandy is going to lose and lose big for the next 3 years and after bombing in the NFL taking  the Vandy job is not smart IMO. Winning and building Rutgers in the Big East/ AAU is not like winning at Vandy in the SEC.  Thanks for the list my pick is Narduzzi MSU had a nasty D this year.

9 months, 3 weeks ago on D-Coordinator Shoop Heading To Penn State With Franklin, But We Know Who VU Should Pursue

Reply

I agree with most of this article, there is no loyalty in coaching. Rich Rod left West Virginia for Michigan once.

But please note that most Vandy fans were happy for Coach Franklin until he set fire to Vandy's future. Vandy only has 3 recruits still committed with less than 3 weeks until signing day. He talked about players de-committing not being honorable but practically every recruit from Vandy has now done that. The writer of the quoted article on Vandysports does not represent all Vandy fans either. No Vanderbilt Fans wants to go back to 2 win seasons which is what we are looking at for at least the next 3 years. Vandy went from having a top 25 class to have a top 250 class in 2 days. Maybe you can understand the frustration in seeing what was a bright future collapse. No coach is going to want the job now either. At least Kiffin left a top 10 class, and a desirable job for someone. Franklin has left nothing to build on at the toughest job in America.

@JohnLittle1 I would not touch him with a 10000 mile pole. He is a known liar, ran a kid until he died,. and not what Vanderbilt represents. Better to lose 12 games a season than sell your soul. Which is what going to happen anyways (12 loses) since Vandy is the worst job in the country now and no one will want it.

9 months, 3 weeks ago on Reports: Franklin To Pull Up Anchor, Leave Vanderbilt For Penn State

I'm not sure Vandy's job is that great now. Recruits are jumping ship and national signing day is less than one month away. Vandy may not have a coach until almost February and most of the top notch guys will be gone by then. They may sign less than 15 players. Also how many kids are going to transfer to another school. The job will be looked at as worse now than it was when CJF took it. No one will want it except someone only looking for the $$$ and not committed to winning. This has set the program back 5 years at least. I'm used to the losing but it just seems the job by Franklin is going unfinished. Probably looking at more 2 win teams for the next few years. The Cellar is back to feeling like home. It was fun while it lasted. Thanks for the good times and good luck a Penn St.

@sojourner Name me one program that would not struggle to fill a 40K stadium given the last 40, or 50 or even 60 years like Vandy has had. I do not know or care which team you cheer for but I guarantee you would not be a fan of that program if you had to deal with the mind numbing losing that I have had. Living in TN I have to deal with UT fans that 20 years ago we saying they were true fans that now are wearing Bama or Gator shirts. Also Guess what Vandy has one of the top 10 Baseball programs in the country, not tiddly winks. They have won several SEC titles in the last 10 years. Can your team claim any? Enjoy what ever band wagon you ride.

FYI: this is not directed at the writer, but at the self righteous fans that want to kick other fans while they are down!!

@sojourner So Austin Peay, Wake Forest, and Kentucky are Name brand opponents?? And yes no Vandy fan should attend the crap bowl they were exiled to, but so far the tickets sales have been good. The best thing I think should happen is for the fans to send a message to the SEC and protest the BBVA Condemned Bowl and for less than the travel squad to go but that's not going to happen. I have already blacked out the SEC logo on my Vandy apparel. And hope more do the same.

Thanks for being truthful about the situation, but without a chance to do so how does Vandy prove their worth? That is what is frustrating for us as fans we are stuck with a stigma that is unproven. It a self fulfilling prophecy no one wants to go to a condemned stadium in freezing January. Also now 2 years in a row the Gator Bowl has PO'ed Vandy fans to the point that even if they are forced to host the Dores then most fans would boycott and not give them our money.

Also note when games are played last year the Music City Bowl was played in the afternoon on New Years Eve which is a work day for most people. Night Games get better ratings which is why all sports play mainly night games. Usually Three SEC bowl games run at the same time on New Years Day, but people usually switch between the 3 games and latch on to the most interesting. If 2 are Blowouts then the better game gets better ratings, and some people do not have Cable or only have basic. Also the opponent has to do with the ratings. No one is going to watch or care about the Compass Bowl no matter who is playing. The game is on the same day as the NFL Playoffs.

I think most of the issues Vandy fans have they feel as if they are being lied to.

Last year We were told the reason Miss St Jumped to the Gator Bowl (which they did not sell all their tickets to) was to avoid a re-match game with Northwestern. Then they schedule a rematch of a bowl game from last year instead of taking Vandy. The reason for skipping Vandy this year is that UGA had a better conference record and not head to head.  Yet the Music City bowl picked Ole Miss with a worse record because of head to head. They also claimed they wanted to avoid having the same team 2 years in a row, yet UK and Minnesota  have played there in consecutive years. Then the Liberty Bowl takes Miss St. at 6-6 over Vandy. add to that The fans are being told every year the only way to improve Vandy's bowl lot is shut up and sell out the bowl this year, something they have done for 2 year running. Now they are being told the same thing again for the lowest bowl in the pecking order in a Stadium that has sections that were condemned. Now if they don't sell it out then the naysayers will say "I told you so" but if they do then some other excuse will be tossed out next year even if they have and equal or better record. While yes Duke did go 10-3 in the ACC Most of us know Slive would never fight for a 10-2 Division winning Vandy to a better bowl. Heck if UF or UT is bowl eligible next year Vandy at 10-3  would end up in Shreveport LA or sitting at home.

@sec_fan I understand what the writer was saying, but This is very bad for the Dores. Recruiting will be hurt greatly (A coach is going to say "Why would anyone chose Vandy The best seasons there result in the worst bowls, come here and we will have better bowls even in our bad seasons") Last year Vandy was told that the Gator bowl passed on them to avoid a rematch with Northwestern, yet this year they have a rematch of a bowl game from last year. They also claim the reason for choosing UGA was better conference record yet Vandy beat UGA, then the Music City bowl picks Ole Miss with a worse conference and overall record because they won head to head.  The sad thing is if UT or UF gotten 6 wins then Vandy would not have gotten a bowl. Vandy sold all of it's allotment to both the Liberty and Music City bowls, and were told that selling them out would result in better bowls for the team in the future yet they have went down to the bottom of the list. The ACC comish fought to get the best bowl for Duke what did Slive do for Vandy? This bowl is on the same day the NFL playoffs start so no one will watch or care.

I find it strange that you congratulate Vandy for being the last team picked and getting the worst Bowl the SEC has to offer. This is not a shot at this site or the writer and I hope and think it was sarcasm. This was a major blow to the fans, and program and will destroy recruiting for the team. Most Vandy fans feel if they had have held on and beaten Ole Miss and went 9-3 they would have still gotten this crap Bowl. Some are even suggesting leaving the SEC. Another cold weather bowl while the rest of the Conference laughs at us.

Honestly given Vandy's history of finding ways to lose games, the Td pass at the end was not running up the score, Vandy was only up 9 at the time and it was fourth down clearly the game was not in hand at all. If they taken a knee then they risk an Auburn type of TD pass then onside kick recovery and one long pass and Game winning FG (like Northwestern suffered) or they could have kicked a FG and risked a block and TD and the rest. Not highly likely but both things happened Saturday and with Vandy anything bad can and will happen. The play they ran was the safest one a jump pass that if it not there then kneel down and take you chances with the hail mary. It's not like Franklin is a 1990's Fulmer or Spurrier throwing TD's with a 30 plus point lead and superior talent. I have seen many times running it up and what Frankin did IMO was good strategy.  Had the ran the same play a the 30 yard line instead of the 10 then the tight end is tackled and the games over.
