its not all bad defense.  the bad offense and TO's are what gave them the advantage.  Malone needs to focus on offense even a little.  if you get good possessions and good shots you don't get dunked on the other end and then blame defense for them shooting high percentages.  make the other team pull the ball out of the net.

ahh Jimmer, lovers and haters.  this is not about Jimmer, we know what he can and cant do.  really not that different than IT.  This is about coaching. You cannot not play someone and then give them very little time and then expect them to shine against the best teams.  Frankly, Ben has looked ridiculous out there most of the nights.  Get him the ball in transitions and when players are driving get him a kick out so he is catching it with his defender trying to recover and let him blow by.  Instead he catches it out on the wing from another wing and then has to 100% create his own shot.  Malone, please try to get your players in opportunities to play to their strengths.

If Jimmer is in he needs to shoot 3's period. if he shoots 3's, even if he misses it will cause the floor to get opened up and spread.  his shot fake will let him get by people.  giving him the ball at the top of the key with coles on him isolated is coaching. its  a bad offense.   even so jimmer entered the ball and more than half the time was left wide open with no kick back out but the man with the ball in DC and Gay dribbled into a crowd creating a turn over. Kick that back out as jammer steps into his shot, get him three threes in 2 min like the hawks did for korver.

did anyone watch the Hawks/kings???? Korver did not create one shot from three!! not one!!! In fact, something happened I have never seen on the Kings.  Horford drove all the way in jumped in the air turned around and fired it back out to a trailing Korver who drilled the 3.  Jimmer made a living at BYU doing this.  Even at BYU Jimmer did not get the ball isolated against an athletic defender and try to go one on one.  I watch game tape after game tape and I see Jimmer wide open as Kings drive into double teams and low percentage shots.  One pass back out and one more rotation pass normally gets a wide open three.  I am so tired of watching Jimmer set up Outlaw to brick.  Outlaw take the pass drive by the recovering defender and when jimmers man helps kick it back to him. This is how BYU blew teams up that were much more athletic like Derek Williams and Kawhi.  If you shoot 40% from 3 the other team has to shoot 60% to tie from two.Kings need to get and and run and get threes in transition, like the Warriors.

Malone, don't have Gay bring it up, have Gay or acey or anyone jog down and cross in front of Cole a couple of times and your done, .  Use Gay to set pick and rolls and let Jimmer shoot deep threes in transition.  This will get other guys open and one on ones.  Gay and Dc drove into doubles all night.  The Kings had big man mismatches all night but allowed the Heat to double down at will and help.  PLAY TO YOUR PLAYERS STRENGTHS AND QUIT BLAMING THEM FOR NOT SHINING WHEN YOU ARE NOT PUTTING THEM INTO POSITIONS TO SUCCEED.  Get guys slashing and kicking, entering and the post and kicking back out swing it around and renter it. One pass and then its dribble drive shoot, other team is running.  Come on man.

@tpistoia I agree IT has played well for what he brings.  The big difference in my scheme that i think people are mistaking is that I do not want Jimmer to come out and out play IT.  No.  The issue is that right now the whole offense runs through IT.  He is not a super star, not even an all star.  I stated a long time ago if IT score over 20 Kings lose.  Go count all the games he scored over 20 and then look at the few games they won and how many did he score over 20?  My offense instead runs the offense through the best players, creates options.  This is similar to the triangle high post Phil Jackson used with MJ and the Bulls.  One issue you have with score first point guards is that they tend to reduce the roll of other players.  This is livable if the guards are the best players on the court. When your best players are now Gay and DC you will never win consistently having IT be the offense. Could you imagine if Dennis Johnson, Steve Kerr, Derek Fisher were score first players? I wil tell you this, no other coach comes in saying how do we stop IT? or we cant beat the Kings with IT.  IT does not facilitate naturally.  His assists usually come after hes trying to score and runs out of options. You need a team player and facilitator here so you can get your better players dominating the touches.  BUT the main point is that the offense needs to be entered to Gay with DC at the opposite block the first option.  With Ben setting the first pick and roll it leaves him  at the three point line for a kick back pass but more importantly he is the main defender to get back on D.  Hes the most athletic on the team.  Currently when IT drives there is no one back. or it leaves IT to get back which as weve seen is worthless.  This offense has so many reads and options, but most importantly it changes the touches and the way the offense is run.  As long as IT controls it and score over 20 allowing defenses to double and triple team the kings will be a 35-40% winning team.  Malone can yell about defense all day, but when he plays more talented teams, which is almost every night hes at a disadvantage.  You cant just say hustle and play harder, you have to exploit your strengths and their weaknesses and create coaching and strategic advantages more often than they do or you will keep losing.

MALONE PLEASE READ THIS AND CALL ME FOR ADVICE.

The Rudy Gay trade was a huge lift for the Kings.  With a good coach they could be a 500+ team right now.  You need a coach that plays to the teams strengths and schemes to soften weaknesses.  This coach has one philosophy and then blames his team for not matching their strengths with his strategy.  Malone, use your Brain.

This game is squarely on Malone and IT.  IT cannot win.  He controls the Kings total offense, touches the ball every single time.  He doesn't score 29 because hes great, he scores because his defender in this case predominantly Bledsoe dropped off him when ever he didnt have the ball.  DC had double and triple teams all night and was getting frustrated.  Gay hardly had any shots created for him, maybe even none. Wait he had one three that IT through out to him for one of ITs two assists.  He had to create everyone of his shots. Meanwhile most of IT's points came from loose balls or broken plays where he scored because he was unguarded.  IT got crushed by Dragic and Bledsoe.  The best teams in the league have the ability to score in bunches.  IT is great for a energetic burst off the bench make a diving play the crowd cheers.  Twp games in a row, just killed the Kings.  I said against the Jazz three games ago, when they won it took a colossal melt down by the jazz to even give the Kings a chance.  Even the woeful Jazz didnt do that again.

Jimmer haters and lovers...whatever you are, he can help in a big way.  You cannot leave him.  This opens up the whole floor for everyone else.  Get the pick and roll working, get the inside out game.  Get Jimmer 5 threes a game and assists will go up scoring will go up, efficiency will go up.  When the other team is pulling the ball out of the net you have tim to get the defense set up.  when you are turning it over and bricking threes (Thorton and McLemore) the other team is running and dunking.  Defense creates offense, and so does efficient offense create better defense.

When you can hit three threes in a  row it is devastating and usually results in the crowd going bananas and the other team calling time out.  Then it leads to shot fakes and driving with alley oop lobs.  (see the Phx Suns tonight)  Get the Kings in transition offense, get the drivers driving and kicking and one more swing pass to an open "shooter."  Get immer involved early, get him threes in transition.  The guy can shoot from 30 feet!!  yet he has 7 3's all year?????????????????????????

When the drivers catch the ball at the three open make them slash and kick to the shooters.  so the drivers slash and the shooters shoot.  right now everyone shoots and everyone drives????  Gay and DC cannot be stopped one on one.  Jimmer cant be stopped if hes has open shots or gets the ball in transition or on the pic and roll.  SUMMARY: HELP YOUR TEAM PLAY TO THEIR STRENGTHS, NOT MAKE THE TEAM TRY TO PLAY TO YOUR  IDEOLOGY.  Anyone can win with Lebron or Jordan, but please explain how Bird won at every level? player, coach gm even though he was the most unathletic player on the floor. eg...If Jimmer is getting 'd up bringing the ball up throw a big man to screen as they run down.  thats all you need.  if DC is getting doubled run a designed inside out and get a shooter a wide open three.

I have some plays if you need.  Heres one.. instead of the same ol pic and roll or your two guards trying to come off a double screen which just leads to them open enough to catch it to turn and the trailing defender is right there.  Try this...4 and 5 high low opposite elbow and block, Jimmer at the point, have Ben from the wing set a pic and roll for Jimmer at three point line, AT THE SAME TIME THE 5 SCREENS FROM ELBOW DOWN TO THE 4 AT OPPOSITE BLOCK.  Jimmer has three options #1 hit Gay at the 4 (for this play) coming to the elbow, 2. drive the open lane created by the 5 screening down, 3. step back and shoot the three, 4. hit ben on th epic and roll. Option #1 Hit Gay coming to the elbow off the screen from DC.Now Gay has 4 options, 1. shoot (15 footer), 2. drive, 3. drop it DM at the opposite block or 4.  jimmer flaring out to the baseline three if his man cheats down.  5. Also has Ben stepping back to middle three for kick out if his man cheats down. If the defenders switch on the 4/5 screens Jimmer can add #5 option... throw it over the top for an oop dunk to DC.  This is chess, you make moves that exploit your players strengths and isolate defenders weakness.   This gives your best players the ball and makes each of your players getting the ball in scenarios that play to their strengths. If you want to run it through DC have hi start at the opposite low block and JT or DWill can start at the opposite elbow and screen down.  Almost no standing around, and all the moving will create open lanes fro scores to score.  Read what the defense gives you and take it.eg steve nash and John Stockton.  This gives your players the platform to do it.Call the play USA.  Lets do this...

Tonight, the worst team in the NBA without one of their best players tanked and literally did not even try to shoot or run any kind of offense up by 5 with 2 minutes left in two consecutive offensive series.  One they dribble around for 22 seconds and then the same dribbler shot a 26 footer, the next time they got a shot clock violation.  even with all of that it still took a lucky missed free throw by Hayward, and then terrible coaching on the last possession.  how do you let an open three come off when youre up by three and less than 24 seconds left and the other team has no timeouts???? well you could double team the shooters, play a 3-2 zone, give up the dunk, eve just foul, as soon as Isaiah passes the three point line dribbling just foul him???? Jefferson, even lets Ben go to cover the screener who is a non three point threat and youre up by 3??

then mike Malone tries to take credit for the win "it was me calming the players down" that did it. You mean the only team almost as bad as you (without arguably their best player) collapsing that even gave you a chance and then allows a wide open three by one of two players on the floor that could even shoot a three??? Malone, that comment was almost as embarrassing as Tyrones coaching down the stretch.

The reason you are in the game against other good teams is because they use you as a rest game.  they monitor the score, resting their starters and just make sure its close and they keep it in range.  it is not coincidence that you lose all of these and had the Jazz even attempted to run an offense in any of the last two series, you lose.  Ben arguable ran three steps and no travel call and then Hayward was shoved out of bounds on the inbound play from baseline and no call.  if the call does not go your way on any of those you also just lost to the 4-17 jazz.  Malone tried to say this was a door opener to finishing on top of close games...reality, you have a 50/50 shot to win whenever you play the other worst teams in the NBA when they don't have their best player...

@al asifyouknow IT is terribly overrated.  The reason he scores so much is because he does not look to pas sunless he gets stuck.  The other coaches know he cant beat you and he is easy to control. they actually want him to control the ball for the Kings.  The reason the kings are in all these close games is because they know they can beat the Kings at will.  The Clippers watched a 20 point lead evaporate with their horrible bench and still left their starters on the bench until deep into the 4th.  Then they took over at will and one.  In other words, these teams are using this game as arrest game and monitoring the score, once it gets too close they take it back over.  if these were playoff games, the Kings would be stepped on in the first half and never let back in it and yes IT would score 20+.  If you force IT right and don't allow him to come back left to finish he is done.  you can let him bomb threes because he hits a few but when he misses there is only a 5'8 defender between your fast breakers and the hoop. Like I have said, I love his effort but he is so beatable.

Nobody hates IT. Everyone loves him including me. Great story. He was the same player at Washington. No one really feared that team either. When he scores over 20 the team loses.

Best starting line up cousins, Thompson, Mclamore, jimmer, Vasquez.

Give me the reigns, I'll win games with this line up. Gives me 3 people that can get to the rack, get others open shots and open the middle for cousins. Watch it closely with it, Thornton, and the new big guy playing key roles, with subs based on match ups. Jimmer and cousins make up a very difficult pick and roll. This will create mismatches and kick out open shots. Protect the key force jump shots run and gun. Big DC can run and we never use that. There are few shooters in the nba. It's all about match ups weaknesses and strengths. Malone is doing none of that cerebral thinking like smart. He's just sticking with what his one strategy and doesn't have the right team. Cousins is getting super frustrated. This team is brutal. Their only chance to win is the other team not showing up like Brooklyn did. They are losing to everyone. When do the Kings play Utah? That should be the best game all year.

Ps patrick Patterson should not shoot another three all year.

The Kings will never win with IT. He is a roll player. Look at the stats this year and last year. If he scores over 20 they lose. The reason he scores a lot is because he is not a pure shooter and teams do not fear him. They do not key on him nor double team. In fact they leave him a lot to help. They know that at will they can lock him down and force him to take bad shots. If you take away his easy points, like technical free throws and fast break layups where someone else stole or rebounded and he got the benefit of an easy lay up, his shooting is not good. The majority of his 3s come when he is wide open because someone left him to help. He makes athletic moves and cool plays a few times a game everyone cheers and they lose. Most of the games I've seen where he "dominated" the Kings were never really in it, made a last second charge against opposing benches and lost. Thornton can only shoot a standing catch and shoot jumper. He is worthless to create or make anyone better. It does not make anyone better and grievous needs a superstar to be good. This is the worst team in the nba. Mike Malone is worse than Smart right now.

Sorry had to repost, too many auto correct iPad typos.....Ok, ok, I'm finally going to post. Having played all my life, played against NBA players, even dunked on a couple and been a fan of the game my whole life, I want to add few comments. Jimmer can play. He can do some things that very few players can really do in the nba. 1. Is shoot 3's off the dribble. This is much harder than shooting on the pass especially if it's coming from inside out. Jimmer rarely got inside out passes or opportunities to shoot off the pass, he created most of his 3s. He is also very strong in the open court where he can use his body and shot fakes to get open shots. He rarely got those opportunities. It is also very difficult to come off the bench after sitting literally for an hoe or so and then suddenly being thrust in the game, especially if you haven't played for a few games. To say he can't dribble we'll enough to play guard makes no sense. If that's the case make a dual point/ shooting guard role. Most teams do not have two perimeter defenders that are lock down. Get the outlet going and give it to ever jimmer or the other guard let then rotate, get them both running on on made baskets and rebounds, let them push the defense back. If jimmer is getting d'd up get him help, but then get the ball back to him, when me he's in there he is a top shooter in the league, get him shots. Get him the ball in. Space the court, use his spacing because you can't leave him to double up the other guard or cousins. This is all coaching and strategy. In other words help jimmer play to his strengths and same with the other players. Get your players in positions where they get opportunities to play to their strengths, this has never happened. What has happened is either give the ball to jimmer as pg, isolate him with full court pressure and then blame him for not being athletic enough. I never saw Marino trying to be mike Vick. The other thing that has happened is designate another pg and he brings it up every time. Jimmer goes and stand in the corner worthless. Maybe he tries to come off a screen. I saw Derek rose at the kings two years ago get Kyle Korver the ball 3 straight times and he scored 9 points in less than 1 min. The third play rose drove in turned around and pitched it back to trailing korver who drilled the third three. I have never once seen that happen on the kings with jimmer . #2. Jimmer can hit from 25+ feet. He becomes so dangerous, those shots come from transition and open court, and allows him to use the shot fake to become lethal to defenses (see Larry bird highlights) But no king looks to give up the rock. You've got to put people in position to succeed, play to their strengths. As for defense, clog the middle tell jimmer to keep his man in front of him give him space if needed turn it into a jump shooting contest, but to do that you must force perimeter shots and then let jimmer and Thornton and or whoever is hot shoot the rock. Watch gs for lessons. I'll put jimmer up against anyone in the league shooting when you give him confidence and the opportunity to play his game. The shot fake from a good shooter is the most dangerous move in basketball. Once your off you're feet you're dead defense is now out numbered with ball going at the hoop. If jimmer fakes and gets his man off balance he can step up one step and drill, step to the side stay behind the three and drill or get to the paint with oops , floaters or kick out for other threes, with the right coaching this could be so tough to defend. I never saw jimmer in college slowly bring the ball up and then go head to head with a more athletic defender, he scored by keeping his man off balance and using his broad shoulders to create space. Tis is all coaching...in college they say go where they want you. If you try to walk on where you want to go even if you're better you don't play or get a fair shake. I think smart and Malone play their style of basketball and don't have the ability to draw schemes based on what they have. So you have to get players that fit their style. Few coaches can do the opposite. Guys Ike poppovich, Phil Jackson and pat Riley built schemes that played to their players strengths and protected against their weaknesses. Jimmer shoot 10 shots a game with 3-4 threes per game. You will get production and consistent production and. Then when he scores in bunches it's a dagger. As for Isaiah. Love this kid, love his heart, his attitude. Heis not nearly as valuable as everyone thinks. He is less athletic than Nate Robinson, not a pure shooter. He plays hard and looks to score first and can hit the open shot, but won't out shoot you over time or a season and videos t make others better. You can leave him to double team which every one does. If IM the other coach I say make IT beat us. If he scores more than 20 we will win. Look at the stats over last year. Look at last clipper game. iT could not have played any better. He had nearly the perfect game and they lost by 10. After the game doc rivers said, it was a good game and Chris paul only had to play 35 min, in other words it was a rest game. Then it came out and went 2-9 against GS. He got points from the the warriors 4 technicals for touching the ball after the game on ft. You also have to consider the kings players. Everyone one of them last year was fighting for. Anew contract or to just stay in the league. Every time they got the ball they had to score. There was and and still isn't really anyone who can actually do what is best for the team and try to win. If you're in you have to score, you have to get stats or you get cut or out of the league. Except for cousins, and maybe vasques, everyone has to Look out for self preservation. If this was money ball and you could keep a secret stat, assist opportunities created where the recipient failed to score, jimmer would lead the kings per min played. I watched give guys wide open jumpers all year to have them brick. Yet no one returned the favor. Now let's get jimmer out of sac town and on to a team that can play team defense, keep his man taking jump shots and letting jimmer fire when he's in there. You will see great athletes get off balance, get in the air and watch jimmer create and score. He will open up lanes for and posts for other scoters, cause you can't leave him. He can penetrate and pass better than reddick. With the right coach and system he will thrive. You'll see him score 30+ Now and again and have more double digit quarters, yes quarters. With soooo many teams that have no bench that desperately need scoring, you will see him do much better else where. Not saying hell start or be a dwilliams, but he'll be a hero like Vinny Johnson, Derek fisher, and others who played huge rolls off the bench on high caliber teams. The best thing about being a free agent, he can finally interview and choose to go where he's wanted and opportunities created.
