@djamon @sharkbabysitter wingers, cover the points and be on the boards at the hashmarks for the breakout pass. it's very simple and very effective. commit to it for ONE WHOLE GAME, line one. See what happens.

While there were certainly some positives last night (line 2 and 3, percy) our game is still fundamentally flawed. We are still giving up almost 40 shots a game. it's ridiculous. and just like last year, it isn't sustainable. yes, they, aren't swarming as bad as  last year, but neither are they covering the points religiously yet either. especially line one. the biggest problem in our D end is with our forwards, and if this isn't fixed, we aren't getting anywhere.

komorav-santorelli-clarkson line is the biggest news out of the first three games. they are getting it done and eventually the goals will fall for them. great chemistry. great effort. komorav's energy is so contagious.

also really liking winnick on line two. kadri and lupul looked great tonight.

@Edward_Flannery i like clarkson on the powerplay. we need to build his confidence. gards and reilly together won't last long. it was an effort to keep the left side/right side in tact, without one of the kids playing with percy in his first game.

with kozun as a wing rover to different lines when they need energy. can you imagine what him and kessel wold look like skating together?

reilly was a beast. our best d. followed by holzer, then phaneuf. (and i hate phaneuf.)

another glaringly simple thing about randy's D system last year is that it wasn't working. Whether it was the makeup of the players or their lack of effort, who cares. a good coach recognizes when something isn't working and he adapts. randy didn't. not for one second.

i have no hope that carlyle will change. his defensive system was the biggest problem last year. when your wingers are always collapsed in front of the net, they're aren't in position to cover their D or break the puck out at the hashmarks. thus, we looked like we were short-handed in our zone the whole season. Record-setting shots against. it wasn't solely the lack of effort, Randy. No one buys that shit.

i think Shanahan knows who the next coach of the Leafs is going to be, and he's known it for months. Maybe since before he arrived. Mike Babcock. Starting next season. He didn't want to hire another coach for a year, only to let him go. he had to show loyalty, but he quickly put Spotter in place to defuse some of Randy's ridiculous notions (lineup, usage, systems) and very likely to take over as interim coach when Randy hangs himself. Which i suspect will be before Christmas. Babcock will get the biggest contract in the history of the NHL, and he will earn every penny of it. bright times ahead, i say.

@Mitch_S2 @TheCanucksnaphook @sharkbabysitter  no it isn't. carlyle hockey is collapse in front of the net and not have the wingers on the half-boards to break the puck out. and then wonder why the puck isn't getting broken out.

@DeclanK @CanuckUKinToronto  the forwards aren't on the half-wall for the breakout because they're down low in front of the net instead of in position. if they were covering the points, they'd be on the hash-marks for the breakout pass.

6 months, 3 weeks ago on Poll: Now What?

i don't think we're in as bad a shape as everyone's saying. our front end is actually strong. i think our demise is coach driven. biggest problems:

1) a defensive system that allowed more shots against in a single season than anyone else in NHL history. how can we properly execute anything else when we're hemmed in our zone the whole game chasing the puck like tim bits. even if the shots are "from the outside and not dangerous" (bullshit), it takes our mojo away to have a team cycle the puck on us at will. Swarm defence is the stupidest system i have ever seen.

2) not running four lines regularly to keep the energy up. burning everyone out.

3) keep the game fun. Ryan getzlaf said carlyle was the only coach he's had who took the fun out of hockey. you can see this in the players.

address these 3 issues (and bring back komarov) and it could be a whole new ballgame without a major core shakeup. goodbye RC. your stubbornness and refusal to adapt sealed your fate.

@Jordan29  i agree about the law of averages though. we can't be outshot 2-1 every game and feel good about winning. we knew it would catch up. and i'm glad it has, so we can address the problems. if we made the playoffs, carlyle would get another year, and he doesn't deserve it. his defensive system is the biggest problem, and has been all year. first became glaringly evident in game 7 against boston
