@Greg Fenton coach has a lot to do with it. systems, who plays together, how much ice time and when. carlyle had the worst defensive system in the league last year, and blamed it on compete. also ran the top six into the ground. i can't see how he's not hated by a lot of people in that dressing room.
1 week, 1 day ago on Cody Franson Signs with Toronto Maple Leafs for 1 year, $3.3m
i'd like to see franson, reimer, lupul for o'reilly.
1 week, 2 days ago on Weekend Mashup: $2.2 million apart
@FrankFerrant but his fucked-up d system has been just as costly. most shots against ever, enough said.
3 months, 3 weeks ago on Poll: Who do you want as the Head Coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs?
@Mitch_S2 @TheCanucksnaphook @sharkbabysitter no it isn't. carlyle hockey is collapse in front of the net and not have the wingers on the half-boards to break the puck out. and then wonder why the puck isn't getting broken out.
3 months, 3 weeks ago on Thursday Mashup: Bruins in town, Verhaeghe signs, Ranger named Leafs’ Masterton nominee
this is gonna sound terrible, but i don't want the leafs to make the playoffs. that'll keep carlyle's system afloat. fuck that. get someone in who plays old-school, cover the point defense. like boston, and every other successful team.
@DeclanK @CanuckUKinToronto the forwards aren't on the half-wall for the breakout because they're down low in front of the net instead of in position. if they were covering the points, they'd be on the hash-marks for the breakout pass.
4 months ago on Poll: Now What?
@dontcallmeshirley d zone systems and the fact that we have the worst shots against in history. jesus. why isn't this the only thing people are talking about? why isn't the media drilling carlyle on this instead of talking about his fucking relationship with reimer.
i don't think we're in as bad a shape as everyone's saying. our front end is actually strong. i think our demise is coach driven. biggest problems:
1) a defensive system that allowed more shots against in a single season than anyone else in NHL history. how can we properly execute anything else when we're hemmed in our zone the whole game chasing the puck like tim bits. even if the shots are "from the outside and not dangerous" (bullshit), it takes our mojo away to have a team cycle the puck on us at will. Swarm defence is the stupidest system i have ever seen.
2) not running four lines regularly to keep the energy up. burning everyone out.
3) keep the game fun. Ryan getzlaf said carlyle was the only coach he's had who took the fun out of hockey. you can see this in the players.
address these 3 issues (and bring back komarov) and it could be a whole new ballgame without a major core shakeup. goodbye RC. your stubbornness and refusal to adapt sealed your fate.
@Jordan29 i agree about the law of averages though. we can't be outshot 2-1 every game and feel good about winning. we knew it would catch up. and i'm glad it has, so we can address the problems. if we made the playoffs, carlyle would get another year, and he doesn't deserve it. his defensive system is the biggest problem, and has been all year. first became glaringly evident in game 7 against boston
@Pent_House @Yaknowwhat come on. we got him for $1 mill. great deal.
4 months ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #76, Red Wings at Maple Leafs
i'm still amazed that the only discussion in town isn't RC's faulty defensive system and the fact that we're going to have the most shots against in the history of the NHL.
show us you can adapt, Randy!!! Show us tonight!!!
@CanuckUKinToronto yup. i've been saying it since the boston series last year. carlyle's fucking swarm system is ridiculous. wingers have to take the points, which will kill their cycle, and put the wingers in position for the breakout. fuck me. how can't they see this?
4 months ago on The Decline of Dion Phaneuf
good write up. what i hate most about phaneuf is that he won't be the first on the puck in the corner. he won't take the hit, then come out with the puck. he lets the other guy go first, then smothers him, pussy style. none our defenceman on the olympic team did this. it's really uninspiring to have our captain play this way. plus he doesn't move his feet or look like he's hustling ever. i really wish he wasn't the captain. it sends a bad message to everyone.
little late to the party, but great write up on the defensive system problems, Alec. It really is the elephant in the room. how are we supposed to execute any other part of our game confidently when we're getting 40 shots against every night. i heard somewhere that we're on pace to have the 3rd worst shots against in the history of the nhl. back to old school D, Randy. cover the points to break the cycle, and so the wingers are in position to break it out. a blind man could see this is what we have to do.
4 months ago on Joffrey Lupul: Also confounded by Leafs’ defensive system
@LeafsManiac @Murph2417 what you say is 100 per cent true. phaneuf is an awful face for this team
4 months ago on Game Review: Game #74, Blues 5 at Maple Leafs 3
49 shots against. once again. nothing else needs to be said.
4 months ago on @SharkClubDundas Game Day: Game #74, Blues at Maple Leafs
@The_Real_Nonis could not agree more. his fucking collapse system has everyone running around like tim bits while they're D get chance after chance to shoot, pass and hem us in. can't believe this is allowed to continue. it should be the only conversation in town. YOUR D SYSTEM DOESN'T WORK RANDY. Change it or leave.
great write-up, AP. giving an ashton-holland-d'amigo 4th line a chance at some reasonable minutes would help the whole team. are you READING THIS, carlyle?!

@Bruffins short term: 40 shots against a night. Long term: 40 shots against a night.
4 months, 1 week ago on Maple Leaf Hangout Ep.#26 with Conor McKenna
@sniperstar @Jordan29 wtf? bernier has more than proven himself, backing up the worst defence in the league. 40 + shots in 12 games, 30 + in almost every other game. He only got 30 shots twice in LA. I predict he'll be Team Canada's goalie in the next Olympics. Nope. We don't trade Bernier. Or Kessel, or Reilly. Carlyle's a different story. If he can't design a system to keep our shots against down, goodbye.
4 months, 1 week ago on Morning Mashup: Leafs + Habs + HNIC
the elephant in the room: 40+ shots against us every game. absolutely unsustainable.
some people say it's carlyle's system and the fact that the opposing D aren't covered.
carlyle says they aren't competing enough.
what do you guys think?
4 months, 2 weeks ago on Game Review: Game #67, Sharks: Many vs. Leafs: Few
48-21 shots last night. every night it's like this. this is the only thing the coaching staff should be talking about until it changes.
something isn't right about the defensive system. it isn't as simple as effort, like carlyle says.
those forward line combinations make me think carlyle does have a brain in his head afterall.

i hope carter takes clarkson's place on the 3rd line. give him a chance at regular minutes on an offensive line for once.
i'd like to see ashton get a shot at a higher line. id put him on line 3send clarson to 4 and give him the message he deserves.

@Loric76 @Gozo it's the system. the wingers gotta cover the points and be on the hashmarks for the breakout pass.
5 months, 3 weeks ago on Game Review: Game #58, Panthers 4 vs. Leafs 1
@MikeGartner11 shawn white's a half-pipe guy. hasn't been on top of the slopestyle game for a while.
@Alec Brownscombe good question. i've wondered that too.
@peterbleafs POSITIONING!!!!!! the wingers have to cover the points, taking away their cycle and putting the wingers in position to break the puck out. this has to be done NOW!!!
@TheCanucksnaphook @Burtonboy it's the fucking defensive system. the wingers have to cover the goddamn points, also putting them in the right place to break the puck out at the hash marks. basic, simple hockey.
40 shots a night says the collapse system isn't working. carlyle is too fucking stubborn to amend his plan. instead he just says they're lazy. that's part of it, but not all.
@Reversethecurse13 @TheCanucksnaphook raymond shouldn't go back with lupul and kadri. they need a bigger, tougher body with them. their a sedin line with raymond on it.
5 months, 3 weeks ago on Leafs Notebook – February 3
@ParadePlanner @reenergized i want kamorov back, maybe at kulemin's expense, but bolland is irreplacable, imo. he's gonna be a heart and soul guy for this team. a dustin brown kinda guy who makes everyone play harder. especially clarkson. we need him back. period.
@rustynail @TheCanucksnaphook @The Truth Hurts no reason for bolland to come back till after the olympic break. we're doing ok. heal up proper.
@GreekGod @CanuckUKinToronto @TheCanucksnaphook john scott?
line consistency is a huge issue and i'm glad lupul had the balls to say it to the media. the only line that has been together for a time is line 1, and look how they're doing. it takes time to gel. and it takes faith from the coach to allow for mistakes without switching everything up as a punishment. with bodies coming back, we have the potential to have as deep a top 3 as anyone. and a badass line 4 if it was used.
4. bodie/mcclement/orr (d'amigo/mclaren, )
ashton and holland should only be used in the top 3 lines. putting them on 4 is not helping them or the team.
if komarov comes back and we need to trade kulemin, he'd be awesome on line 3, with clarkson on line 2.
@loomx yeah, so goodbye franson. it'll be hard to see him go, because when he is on, he's valuable. but the upside to one more tough D man will be felt immediately. like gleason was.
the biggest issue with this team right now is 40 shots against a night. that has to stop. priority one. another tough Dman will help, as will putting the wingers in position to break the puck out. hybrid collapse system, carlyle. not full-time collapse!
@loomx yup. we need one more big, tough stay at home D man like Gleason to complete the back end. Gardiner/Rielly/Franson are too simiar. we need 2 of them, not 3. and we're not trading reilly or gardiner. they truly are the future.
whats wrong with ashton?
5 months, 4 weeks ago on Maple Leafs recall Greg McKegg
@theacs1966 @Cloud09 @Tim Horton we should keep one, but he should only playwhen necessary. and when he does, he better stir up some shit. i'd much rather have a heat-seeking missle like kamorov over a second enforcer any day.
@Rick_Vaives_slapshot @DeclanK yeah, it's funny. american's are supposed to be arrogant prima -donnas. kessel, jvr and gleason are among the most humble dudes on the team. proud to have them.
@Komas Taberle @wiski best line ever.
6 months ago on Dave Poulin talks Olympics, trade deadline, state of the team
Ashton has to be in line for the next offensive spot. he doesn't belong on the 4th line trying to bang. with time, he could be a clarkson. gritty forechecker with skils that will provide the strength on a line with two skilled guys. i'd like to see him with kadri and lupul for a couple of games to see what he can do.
6 months ago on Leafs Notebook – January 27
@dlb eh @sharkbabysitter
i like raymond. he has skills. he just has to be on a line with some toughness, like bolland and holland. putting him with lupul/kadri is almost like putting him with the sedins. i think he'd be great with bolland and holland.
6 months ago on Game Recap: Game #54, Jets 5 vs. Leafs 4 (OT)
realistically, do you think there'll be any substantial trades before deadline? i don't. nonis hasn't seen this whole club together, and is unlikely to make any moves until he does.
that said, how far do you think this line up could go:
so with this, who could we get for: kulemin, franson, reimer? another solid, stay at home D man like Gleason, a big fucker who can also fight?
bad mojo for carlyle to pull bernier when he did. bad mojo.
6 months ago on Game Recap: Game #53, Stars 7 vs. Leafs 1
once we figure out how to break the puck out and keep the shots against to a manageable number, then we can talk about being satisfied.
but points are points, and it sure feels better to be winning than losing!

give the kid a real chance. ashton may be closer to clarkson than many people think.
