Thank you Emily for this article. As always, I don't agree with it all but you are right on so many points and since you always presents your points neutrally and back them up with figures it's always good. I always like that your articles are different from the general press. You always dig up stuff that make sense and that are waiting to be dug up but at the same time if you were not speaking about it it feels like nobody would speak about it. I like that your articles always get us to pause and think for a moment. Keep up the good work.

I often read and consider that Nintendo is the Pixar of videogames, or I should say, since Nintendo is the oldest, that Pixar is the Nintendo of animation because both are able to create products which have different layers of complexity and therefore appeal to lots of different kind of people. They both use colourful and attractive worlds as wrappings and inside there is something to consume and this something is not hollow and have lot of taste going on if you pay attention. It reminds me a bit of the old fables and mythologies story telling where they used animals or fantastic stories as attractive wrapping but underneath there was also always a morale, a lesson etc... I wonder if the main male target audience of the console makers like Pixar movies or not?

I love to be able to play a game with my 5 year old son like Mario Kart for example then my wife either tags in or watch us with interest. If I play on my own I can then go for the hardest challenges in the game, trying to unlock everything or go for online races. In the video game industry, I think it's safe to say that only Nintendo is able to deliver this kind of products. The rest of the industry is either good at niche stuff or specific genres but not at stuff the whole family can sit together and enjoy. Believe me this is priceless. I hope Nintendo is going to continue to produce games which can potentially appeal to everybody while of course also creating some games more targeted at young male or women or whoever they like. But if they give up making products appealing to everybody it would be a sad day for me.

At a time where pleasing the main male audience requires longer and longer development costs and time (look at all the delays this year) since it's all based on realistic graphics, while the retail prices quickly decrease. All this increase the risks of losing lot of money when it flops so it seems indeed a valuable alternative to go after women which are not so stuck up on graphic quality so long there is something interesting behind (this said all the gamers should be like that, unfortunately this is not the case). The same is often true with the cinema, films with lots of special effects but often very hollow are popular and often targeted at the male audience.

And this is why Nintendo is popular with women, because while they tried to fight the graphic technological battle (up until the gamecube), they also always had polished games and always tried to strive for a good gameplay as well. And since the Wii/DS with Iwata they have now stopped the technological race and only focused on differentiating themselves while trying to maintain the gameplay first philosophy. And thanks God for that, who needs 3 identical consoles?!

By the way you didn't mention gay people, I am not sure if it's because there are no figures or if you didn't want to addressed that topic in this particular article? Anyway I think it's relevant and I wouldn't be surprised if the proportion of gay people playing video games are higher at Nintendo than other console makers but of course it's just a feeling.

And you are right with QoL, that blue ocean Iwata is going after is women, at least it makes sense to me too. And indeed if you get the married woman, you potentially get the husband and the kids too.

I would like to write more but then it wouldn't be a comment anymore, (it's already not I know). Sorry for the unstructured wall of text and take care of yourself.

For me it's the word episodes that ruined it. I hate to see episodes in a video game. After Shenmue 3 that never released and the walking dead fiasco of not finishing the story until the rest is released ... I don't like it. Give me a full game or don't. Especially seeing how this struggle, they were hopeful for more episodes...

A Metroid game in VR hmmm . But I think this technology is too young/costly for Nintendo for now. I don't think we'll see it happen soon with Ninty, which I don't mind at all. And this technology still has to prove itself worthy although I know lately it's getting close from what we can hear in the media.

Nice article. I am now playing Zombi U and I have to admit that despite some minor flaws, it is truely a nice experience, a fine horror survival game, more exciting than current Resident Evils. Also what it does with the gamepad is really good. I am especially impress with the sound management and I wish every Nintendo game had the same sound options as a standard.

The "drought" actually allows me to tackle on my other unfinished games such as Zombi U, Rayman Legends and Fist of the NorthStar.

And even if I had finished these 3, I could then focus on finishing at 100% SM3DW, DKCTF, TW101 and NintendoLand.

On the other hand I am dad working and studying and I also play on PC sometimes so I may not be the best person to comment on this. I could imagine that someone with lots of spare time and relying heavily on the Wii U for his gaming could be a bit frustrated?

I thought about this a bit more I am now really wondering about what it really means for us Wii U owners?

Does it mean that the new system will be backwards compatible with the Wii U?

Does it mean that my Wii U digital library of games will be available on the next system?

Does it mean both?

Shouldn't Iwata be more clear on what it entails so that Wii U owners can happily spend some money knowing it won't be wasted with next system? Same with the money spent in the eShop for those who like to go digital frenzy.

Any thoughts Emily?

Mario is not selling as well in the west because these days there are many other alternatives. Western kids like skylanders, lego and minecraft games and many other things as well. And probably if they have 3DS or DS or Wii they already have a mario, so parents don't feel like paying another 300 bucks to play a mario again.

PS: I have a Wii U with SM3DW :  I like mario games.

And also force them to rethink their future.

Iwata is a CEO which understands gaming and game making and I think this is invaluable. I don't think there are other CEO with that statute in the industry? You should see how he resists investors which are trying to push for Nintendo going on mobile phones or asking why they don't fire employees. He is actually a follower of the Yamauchi ideology so I am not sure what are the reproaches?

Great article and great research, that quote from that Seattle Times interview from 2003 is worth gold. There is a lot of truth as always, and I definitely agree they are doing too much of Mario rehashing but I would like to add some comments.

I think for now they stick to the '3DS' plan: release Mario 3D world, then Mario Kart then Smash and see where it takes them. They are thinking it worked for the 3DS, why couldn't it work for the WiiU? They play it safe.

And also look at sales figures of the new IPs like Wonderful 101 and the 3rd parties title. They bombed pretty hard so somehow I don't think Nintendo wants to invest more money into these other genres yet. Bayonetta 2 will be indeed another test. (I am personally so excited for X.)

The Golden Eye example is great but it is also flawed because when it was released there was barely any multi-player FPS on consoles. So this title was successful because it was at the same time, a novelty, a technical prowess and the gameplay was great.

But in this genre and other sports or simulations genres you mentioned, to be successful these days the trend is to rely heavily on graphics which is very expensive and also you need the hardware. So in a sense Nintendo is right and just can't compete on these.

I would love for them to give some love to their other IPs like Metroid, Starfox and F-Zero.

8 months, 2 weeks ago on Nintendo’s Obsession With Finding One Game That Can Sell Consoles

I think there are two things at play here: first is Nintendo wants to attract the 100 millions Wii owners to the Wii U.

And so this cameleoning of products is done on purpose because even if it confuses people or if people make a mistake in the shop at least they get in contact with the "new" Wii.

The second things is that at the same time Nintendo has an obligation to show the GamePad now and then because it's also part of the Wii U.  You can not not show or mention it. They will be fine once the flow of good games is on a better pace.

But I agree with you, I think Nintendo biggest mistakes with the Wii U rather than their hardware or lack of games or lack of modernity in their approach. It's in their marketing and branding that slowed Wii U down.
